SYNOPSIS (THIS OUTLINES THE FLOW OF THE PARTY EVENTS).
The Dawson family moved into their new home at 614 Scarlet Court nearly two
months prior to hosting their first annual block party for the residents of the small
town of Shady Oaks. Isabella Dawson was an experienced party host and after only two
months of living in Shady Oaks, she had earned the infamous title of town gossip.
Nonetheless, the townspeople still flocked to the scene, ready to enjoy an evening of
great company, good food and fun.
After everybody arrived to the Dawson’s home, Isabella got the party started with
delectable appetizers and fun icebreakers. The guests mingled about and caught up on
the recent events in town as some guests revealed their true feelings about one another.
Rumors of blackmail, backstabbing, and revenge surfaced as some guests got into
heated altercations. Tension saturated the air so thickly, it could have been sliced it
with a knife.
Isabella did her best to distract the troubled guests with a delicious dinner along
with exciting party games but to no avail, the guests were mortified to discover that a
murder had occurred. The guests rallied together to figure out whodunit before the
murderer could escape or even worse, claim another victim.
Following an intense murder investigation, the group submitted their best guess
of whodunit and took turns making accusations of who they believed was guilty. The
guests then took turns confessing their involvement, if any, with the crime and to
everybody’s shock, the murderer confessed! After a brilliant escape attempt by the
murderer, the guests settled into enjoying a lovely dessert while playing a party game to
get everybody’s mind off the night's stressful happenings. Isabella knew it would be
difficult for her to top off this memorable night when she hosts the 2nd Annual
Dawson's Block Party!

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION
COSTUME
SUGGESTIONS
Isabella Dawson is the moody and insensitive
homemaker and wife of Ben Dawson. Isabella
and her family recently moved to the tiny town
of Shady Oaks and in no time, she was labeled
the town gossip. Nobody likes to be around
Isabella because of her violent mood swings
but her beautiful, brand new home is perfect for
entertaining.
Trendy attire.
Addison Shade is the ultra-creative interior
designer and skilled carpenter. At times, this
house stylin’ diva can be a very meticulous and
impatient woman. She has designed most of
the houses in the town of Shady Oaks and
rumor has it that she might have her own reality
show in the works.
Paint-splattered
overalls or other
interior design /
carpentry attire.
Optional to have
carpentry tools as
props.
Dakota Drumley is the ill-mannered chef of the
Shady Oaks Diner. Dakota is the rudest soul in
town and is a notorious party crasher. For this
reason, Dakota received an invitation to the
Dawson’s Block Party just to ease the tension!
Chef’s uniform.
Optional to have
a toy chef’s knife
as a prop.
Kendall Kennedy is the antisocial librarian that
suffers from severe anger management issues.
Kendall is extremely judgmental and this quality
tends to offend the customers of the Shady
Oaks Library. Kendall also has an intense fear
of germs so getting too close to her is out of the
question!
Conservative
librarian attire.
Books as optional
props. Latex
gloves and a
mask as
additional
optional props.

Ben Dawson is the most annoying ‘one upper’
in the town of Shady Oaks. If you’ve done, said
or tried anything - Ben is certain to have done it
more often, said it already and tried it three
times. Ben is new to the tiny town of Shady
Oaks, having recently relocated his family here
due to his new position at Bonlin
Pharmaceuticals, Inc. where he is a Senior
Formulations Chemist.
Lab jacket,
glasses.
Optional to have
scientific items
(i.e. test tubes,
beakers, etc.) as
optional props.
Quentin Maddox is the eerie convenience store
clerk at the Shady Oaks Mart. A constant
whistler, Quentin will always grace you with
uncomfortable stares and periods of awkward
silence during conversation. There’s no way to
avoid him, however, as the Shady Oaks Mart is
the only convenience store in town!
Scraggly, tattered
white t-shirt. Hair
unkempt with a
thin beard with a
pointed tuft at the
chin.
Basil Cross is the self-centered restaurant
manager from Deadwood City, the neighboring
‘big city’ of about 36,000 people. Basil has a
problem with constant perspiration and smokes
a Sherlock Holmes’s style pipe around the
clock. He used to live at 614 Scarlet Ct. with
his sister’s family but refuses to talk about his
experiences in the house.
Casual attire. A
Sherlock
Holmes’s style
pipe and a plastic
baggie with water
and a sponge as
an optional prop
to keep you
‘sweaty.’
Gaven Phoenix is the muscle bound jock and
manager of the Shady Oaks Recreation Center.
A recent high school graduate, he often hangs
out with Quentin Maddox in his spare time.
Rumor has it that Gaven was a notorious high
school bully.
Athletic attire &/or
any tight clothing
to display your
real or fake
muscles.
Mirrored aviated
sunglasses as an
optional prop.
Robby Charles is the super-paranoid retired
business owner and chocolatier. Robby is the
founder of Charles’ Chocolates, a world famous
line of chocolates that moved their
headquarters from the tiny town of Shady Oaks
to New York City eight years ago when Robby
retired. Robby’s convinced that the
government is watching Robby’s every move
but really, what interest would the government
have in a retired chocolatier?
Retiree attire –
very casual. A
grayed or white
wig as an
optional
accessory.
Chocolates as an
optional prop.

Margo Presley is the mysterious yet overly
friendly manager of Deadwood Lake Marina. If
you look beyond her gothic and shady
appearance, she is one of the friendliest and
dearest friends you could ever have.
Gothic, almost
vampire-looking
attire. Black
lipstick and black
nail polish as
optional
accessories.
Liam Williams is the arrogant and aggressive
District Attorney of the tiny town of Shady Oaks.
Liam Williams owns one of the three mansions
in town but has never entertained nor allowed a
soul to enter the home. The curious
townspeople often wonder what Liam is hiding.
Trendy business
attire.
Nigel Sage is the ex-star athlete, lettering in
every sport during his high school years. After
an unfortunate accident ended his athletic
career, Nigel decided to follow his father’s
footsteps and become a chemist. He is now a
junior chemist at Bonlin Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
where his father runs the show as the Chief
Executive Officer. Nigel has a shady past, as
he was an infamous tyrant during high school.
His reputation hasn’t improved at Bonlin
Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Trendy attire.
Sadie Dawson is the highly intellectual high
school senior. Sadie is new to the tiny town of
Shady Oaks and attends high school in the
neighboring town of Deadwood City. A
dependable and loyal young woman, Sadie is
the friend to have. That is, if her major
obsessive-compulsive disorder doesn’t bother
you.
Very trendy and
young looking
attire.
You’ll wonder how this crabby, introverted
police officer ever thought he could protect and
serve the people of Shady Oaks. Surprisingly,
Officer Nelson is one of the most highly
decorated officers at the Shady Oaks Police
Department! One likely scenario is that Officer
Nelson has simply intimidated everybody at the
station and everybody does what Officer
Nelson says to do.

If you looked up narcissism in the dictionary,
you will find J.R. Sage’s picture plastered by
the description. J.R. is the father of Nigel Sage
and self-loving Chief Executive Officer of the
only industry in town – Bonlin Pharmaceuticals,
Inc. Since a large portion of the town either is
employed at Bonlin Pharmaceuticals or has a
family member that works for J.R., you would
be safe to say that J.R. controls the town of
Shady Oaks.
Formal business
attire.
Pepper Crenshaw, an impatient English teacher
at Deadwood High School, is the most
adventurous soul in the tiny town of Shady
Oaks. A former jet setter, talented gardener
and nature lover, Pepper has traveled around
the world and experienced cultures and cuisine
that most will only ever see on exotic television
shows! Pepper’s students, however, report that
she has a zero tolerance policy in the
classroom!
Conservative and
formal, very
expensive
looking gown.
Flashy costume
jewelry. A tightly
curled, red wig as
an optional
accessory.
Earline Crenshaw, a recent widow, is the hard
working owner of Shady Oaks Mart. A
compulsive liar even when the truth is better,
this business owner is a known cheater during
board games so beware if you ever play a
game against this master of deceit!
Elderly woman
attire with thick
glasses. A tightly
curled white wig
as an optional
accessory.
There are two sides to Mayor Pauli A. Tishon
and one of them should be avoided at all costs!
If you have something to offer Pauli, the Mayor
has your back. However, if you cross Pauli,
mean spirits will rise to the occasion to greet
you. The Mayor suffers from a severe case of
anxiety so those working in the Mayor’s office
have learned to evade Pauli on a bad day!
Pat Couric is always on top of the latest story
and sometimes before the story happens! Pat’s
an ultra-ambitious investigative reporter for the
television station CBC and will stop at nothing
to be first to get the scoop. Pat is rarely seen
without a troupe of colleagues from CBC News.

TANYA
CLAUS

Optional Female
Tanya Claus is the bubbly owner of the Shady
Oaks Boutique. She is also an aspiring pop
star and works as a local lounge singer at the
Lakefront Pub. She believes she is extremely
talented but hasn’t been lucky enough to find
her big break yet. Tanya is a serious
perfectionist and if there’s ever a need for a
peacemaker, she’s your girl.
Ultra-trendy and
fashionable attire.
*IMPORANT INFORMATION REGARDING CHARACTER ASSIGNMENTS:
Assign your most definite RSVPs and outgoing guests to the required characters and the more tentative,
shy/reserved guests for the optional characters. To figure out who will be a ‘definite RSVP’ it is highly
suggested to send a ‘save the date’ email out to your prospective guests way in advance of the party date so
you can either eliminate those guests from your list who can’t make it (and therefore you will not assign them to
a character) or you can change your party date if enough required-character guests simply cannot make it. It’s
suggested to invite more than the required number of players as guests could cancel at the last minute and
leave you high & dry. You can play as many optional players as you wish and in any combination you choose.
The optional players have the same materials and same participation level, but these optional characters are
not ‘mandatory’ for the storyline to play out and therefore for the mystery to be sleuthed appropriately.
So, what happens if one of your required characters cancels on you at the last minute? First,
take a deep breath…it’s not the end of the world.

act the roles of intriguing personalities while sleuthing the captivating story line. You can never go wrong with

The party pack (this document) needs to be printed in advance of the party. Cut out the clues, slip them into
envelopes labeled with the appropriate round, and character for each round of the party. It is optimal to
choose different colored envelopes for each round and you can purchase the exact amount needed for your
game on the www.MyMysteryparty.com site in the Mystery Prop Emporium section. For economy’s sake,
scroll the clues and fasten with a ribbon. Be sure to label the outside of each scroll with the character/round.
In these instructions, however, we will assume you are using the envelope method for each character, each
round.

If you do not want to know the solution, do not view the final round of clues or the final answer key at the end of
this document. For a complete surprise, you can elect the pre-printed ‘party ready’ party pack option from the
mymysteryparty.com site and we will send you the clues in sealed envelopes and the rest of prepared game
documents –‘ready to go’ (this is an additional charge since we utilize our paper, ink, envelopes, labor, etc.).
We also offer mystery props on the My Mystery Party site in the Prop Emporium including a thunderstorm
ambiance 10 minute sound wav to play in the background, authentic crime scene barrier tape, crime scene
balloons, mystery investigation pens, white face makeup for the victim, victim t-shirts, and even instrumental
rap beats as a downloadable mp3 for the optional but highly suggested bonus game rap contest. There is a
‘Do You Think You Can You Dance’ mp3 track for the Do You Think You Can Dance challenge as well.
The game is organized into four rounds and is structured as follows:
OPTIONAL PRE-GAME TASKS & STARTERS: these pre-game starters and task sheets are to be delivered to each
guest before the party or give them to the guests as they arrive. All pre-game materials are optional and do
not alter the mystery and are intended to enhance the pre-game build up for the event. These starters and
tasks are not vital to solving the mystery and omission of them does not alter the mystery in any way.

OPTIONAL PRE-GAME STARTER
HOST INSTRUCTIONS: Before the party, encourage your guests to view the Your
Mystery Party -
www.YourMysteryParty.com/Scarlet website or use the free printable My Mystery Party invitations as they
have the character descriptions included and a link (web address) to the Your Mystery Party website.
This way, before the party, they can get familiar with the other characters that will be at the party as well as the
history of the town and more! There are also hidden/subtle hints about characters throughout the page so
those guests who choose to be ‘super sleuthers’ can spend some time studying the Your Mystery
Party site prior to the party.

ROUND ONE - MEET & MINGLE APPETIZER HOUR
HOST INSTRUCTIONS: Round one – appetizer / cocktail hour begins as the guests arrive.
DÉCOR: The party area is supposed to be the Dawson family’s new home at 614 Scarlet Ct. Optional: make a
street sign to put in front of your home out of cardboard and PVC pipe for a fun effect. Optional: make a DVD
of pictures of your guests to play like a slideshow during your party on the television / projector screen (if there
is one in the room). Because the game setting is in the family room / living room of the Dawson family’s new
home, any general party area is suitable. You can make this as elaborate as you wish by creating an authentic
‘entrance’ to your home with a sign that says ‘Welcome to the Dawson Family’s Home’ or simply decorate the
room as if you are having any type of party with balloons, etc.

ROUND TWO – DAUNTING DINNER HOUR
HOST INSTRUCTIONS: PRE-GAME SET UP: In the nearest bathroom, place the following items under
the sink - the victim sign (page 62), scotch tape, murder weapon cut out (page 63), host supplied white nontoxic face makeup (optional but funny and suggested), and also include the victim t-shirt and / or crime scene
tape if you have purchased these items. If there is not a cabinet under the sink, place these items in any
location that can be concealed within that bathroom. The victim will be instructed in their clue card for round
two to look for it if there is not a cabinet under the sink. The victim will be instructed in their round two clue
card - after the pre-murder clues have been implemented and as the host reads the results of the
scramble challenge - to go to the nearest restroom to become the victim by applying the white face makeup
on their face (optional), using Scotch tape to adhere the victim sign to their chest and the murder weapon cut
out to their forehead, and if the optional victim t-shirt is available - to put that on (with the victim sign on top)
and if the crime scene tape is there - to decorate themselves with it. It is hilarious when the guests see the
fully decorated victim!

CONCLUSION OF THE ROUND: At the conclusion of this round, give the guests a time period (i.e. 5-10
minutes) in which to fill in their final guesses as to whodunit on the 'Murder Mystery Investigation Sheet'
(page 64+). Collect the guess sheets from your guests at the conclusion of this round. You collect them so the
guests do not get tempted to change their original guesses of whodunit once they hear what others have to say during the
accusation round. If you trust your guests won’t change their answers &/or there is no pride or end of the game prizes on
the line – there’s no need to collect the murder mystery investigation sheets from your guests.

HELPFUL HINTS ON HOW TO PLAY A MYSTERY PARTY
GUEST INSTRUCTIONS
So you’ve been assigned a character and you’ve come to the party dressed in the most
awesome costume and have been told to play your role. So now what?
The mystery is separated into three main rounds of party play. During the party, you will
receive an envelope that contains the clues necessary for your character for the round. The
clues for the characters at the party provide everything that you need to solve the mystery.
However, during the investigation segment of the game, you will need to ask the right
questions and pay close attention to everyone’s clues to get the whole picture of what has
happened.

From this point forward, you are to remain in character until the mystery is solved. If you are
playing a ‘hypocritical police officer,’ then that is who you are until the end! Undoubtedly,
your host cast you into a character that you are comfortable playing. Some characters are
designed to be played more reserved than other characters that should be played more
boisterous. Feel free to play your role however you feel comfortable. Embellish your
character’s personality if you would like. However, if you are feeling more reserved tonight,
you can opt to allow the other guests to approach you or you can simply listen in on others’
conversations to get your information.

anyone's ability to solve the mystery in anyway. However, contacting other guests will lead to excitement about
