My name is Cheri Snell and I am the President of the Almost Home Board of Directors. To tell you a little bit about myself, I live in Webster City, have been married for 30 years this coming Valentines day, have 2 children and a beautiful grand daughter. I have worked at Boehringer Ingelheim (the labs) for 19 years and been involved with the humane society in one form or another for most of them. For the past 3 years, I served as an active member on the board. 2011 has brought along many changes. We have a lot of new faces on the board and a new organization plan at the shelter. With changes, comes struggle often times and this is no different. Most of you have seen in the paper all of the editorials and opinions made by a select few and I think its time for you all to know some facts: Fact – The board of directors are not paid for their time. We volunteer our time and resources for all events and meetings only because we want to help animals. We are a diverse group of people who bring a lot of different experiences to the table. Fact – We appreciate each and every person that helped to make the dream of the new shelter a reality. In order to make this a reality, each and every person counted. It took all of us!! Every penny donated was needed. Fact – We couldn’t rescue even one animal without your donations and support. Fact – We need your continuing support to continue finding homes for the animals that so desperately need someone to love. Fact – Your donation dollars are being used wisely. They are being spent like it was our own money. Very carefully used. New procedures have been implemented to make sure we can account for all of your donations. Fact – We are a NO Kill Shelter- that means we do not kill animals to make room for more or if they have been there too long. An animal is only euthanized as a last resort, because their quality of life can not be made better and it is on the recommendation of the local veterinarians we use. As you are all animal lovers yourself, I’m sure you have had to travel this same path at some time in your life. The decision is not any easier for our staff to make than for your own. That is why we count on the Veterinarians for guidance. Fact – The changes made at the shelter has improved things. The employee organization changed, different people are doing different jobs. The employees are happier, the animals are being well taken care of, being worked with and socialized more and are finding forever homes with new people to love. The place is clean. The animals are still being fed at least twice per day, still have blankets & toys. They are receiving veterinary care and we have Dr Anne who comes twice a week and keeps everyone healthy. Fact – We still need volunteers to help teach the fur babies to trust a human again. We still need help with fundraising, dog walking, answering phones and the hundreds of things that go on every day. Fact – We still need foster care for those fur babies that need a little extra. I once mentioned to several employees that I knew that they didn’t have the best job in the world, and they all whole heartedly disagreed. They work at the shelter because of the animals, because it makes their hearts sing even on a bad day. I now understand that they don’t have the most glamorous job in the world but it could possibly be one of the best. Change is hard, even when it’s for the right reasons. Come to Almost Home, stroll through and check things out. Talk to the employees. Sign up for volunteer orientation or join our volunteer meetings on Wednesdays. Get involved! Oh, and be sure to let us know what you think… I don’t think you will be disappointed. You might even find someone there that makes your own heart sing. I know I have! In this issue of the Paw Print, I would like to introduce to you one of those people. Meet Pat Saunders. She lives in Fort Dodge with her husband Jeff and their four year old Boston Terrier, Dixie. Pat said her favorite part about working at the shelter is taking care of the cats. She said her first pet was a little gray kitten that she tucked inside her coat and snuck into her mother’s house! Pat also has a lot of experience with dogs. She is currently the President of the Fort Dodge Kennel Club. Her mother, Rusty Nelson attended a Dog Obedience Class held at Iowa Central Community College. After the class, a group of dog loving students began talking. One thing led to another and they organized the FDKC. The FDKC is an organization that trains and shows dogs. They compete in obedience, confirmation & rally. Pat is just one of many wonderful employees at Almost Home. Their days are often long and busy with scooping, scrubbing, feeding, watering, petting, and comforting. The job won’t make you rich, but the reward of giving these animals a second chance is priceless. In Loving Memory The Fort Dodge Kennel Club has donated a tree for the “Bark Park” at the Almost Home Humane Society as a living memorial to Marcia King – Brink and her puppy, Sage. Marcia, 54 of Ogden, Iowa was an active member of the Fort Dodge Kennel Club for many years, helping with both the AKC and UKC obedience and agility trials. English Shepherds were her passion. She was active with rescue and placement with the English Shepherd Parent Club. Marcia was out for a walk around her farm with the dogs, when Sage, Marcia’s five month old pup, fell into an overflow well. Marcia tried to save him, but sadly both were lost. Marcia touched the lives of so many and will be greatly missed by those who were privileged to count her among their friends. Healthy Mind & Body in 2011 Now that the hustle & bustle of the holidays are over, many people will be focusing on New Year’s Resolutions. What is your New Year’s Resolution? We would like to encourage people to make a difference in the life of a homeless pet. Everyone enjoys exercising more when they are accompanied by a buddy. We have so many wonderful companions for you to choose from that will always be ready for that morning run or evening walk. Regular exercise will help you keep your heart healthy. And the time that you and your dog spend together will help keep your dog’s heart happy. If you are not in the position to adopt at this time, you are welcome to visit Almost Home and walk one of our dogs on our walking trail. The one on one time spent with each dog will make a real difference in the day of a shelter dog’s life. Once you have settled in for the evening, it’s time to relax. There are many benefits to pet ownership. It is a proven fact that just by petting a dog or a cat you can reduce your blood pressure. Having a feline companion snuggle with you will help ease away the stress of everyday life. There are many ways that you can make a difference in the life of a shelter animal; Adopt, don’t shop Make a monetary donation to pay for veterinary care Donate food or toys Volunteer to walk dogs or cuddle the cats Whatever you are able to give, whether it be time or talent will be appreciated by all of your four legged friends at Almost Home. Wishing you a healthy mind & body in 2011, All the Paws & Claws at Almost Home Calico Cat-i-tude Zoe is a beautiful Calico Cat. She is a mature gal, about seven or so. It sounds like she has struggled her whole life to find just the right family for her. She lived with a young lady who kept her until she went off to college. She then gave Zoe to her mother who had a dog that was not cat friendly. Zoe was scared and unhappy there. She arrived at Almost Home with the hopes of finding a nice, quiet home without dogs. Her pretty eyes have won the hearts of many people who have visited the cattery at Almost Home. She has been adopted twice. The families that had adopted her were looking for a very cuddly companion cat. Lovey, Dovey, Snuggly, Cuddly, that’s just not Zoe’s style. She is strong hearted and independent. She likes attention – upon her request. She loves to be petted – she’ll let you know when to stop. She will even crawl onto your lap if you give her a moment to get to know you. She likes her space, she feels the most comfortable in her wicker basket, and she likes Wendy’s hamburgers. If you are patient and really kind, please consider adding Zoe to your feline family. She has been spayed and she is front declawed. Her adoption fee has been reduced to $50 in hopes of finding the right home for this Calico with Cat-i-tude. Once you have them spayed or neutered (by the date required), we will refund that $50 to you. Cats: Cat not already altered - $50 + $50 deposit Cat not altered, already declawed - $75 + $50 deposit Cat, already altered and declawed - $100 If any animal has been here for more than 6 months or if they are over 7 years of age, the adoption fee is half price! Haylee is a beautiful Doberman Pinscher mix. She was picked up by animal control. When no one claimed her, we brought her to Almost Home to give her the chance to find her forever home. She is 1-2 years old and she has been spayed and has received current vaccines. Haylee’s dream home would consist of a family with active, older children. She is very strong and has a lot of energy. She would enjoy a big, backyard to play fetch in and exercise. She is really smart and eager to please. With a consistent routine, she could be trained easily. This lovely lady attended our annual Dog Walk, “Paws in the Park” last June. She didn’t seem to mind all of the other walkers, two or four legged. She just held her head high and enjoyed the breeze in her face. As she pranced through the park, her ears flopped and her tail wagged. After the pet parade, she laid down on the soft grass in the cool shade. Give Haylee the chance to become part of your family where she will prove to be your loyal and loving friend. We have reduced Haylee’s adoption fee to $50 in hopes of finding her a new home soon! SPICE UP LUNCH WITH A CHESTER BURGER! COME TRY OUR HOME-COOKED WEEKDAY NOON SPECIALS Stay Inside for lunch! Howie’s Courageous Tail Howie’s story begins when he was picked up by animal control as lost or stray. When no one claimed him at the city pound, we brought him to Almost Home. He is a 3 – 4 year old Terrier mix. His coat is mostly white with little brown speckles everywhere. Howie became very ill shortly after he arrived at the shelter. We immediately took him to see a veterinarian. After many tests, they concluded that Howie had a severe reaction to a recent vaccine. Howie needed a blood transfusion to survive. He stayed at the clinic until he was strong enough to return to the shelter. The cost of his care was well over $1,000. Howie takes medication daily; a little pill called Prednisone. It is easily given with a treat. He still visits the vet regularly to monitor his condition. They are hoping to wean him off the daily medicine. It has also been recommended that he not receive any other vaccines. Due to his medical conditions, Howie spent such a long time with us waiting for a family that would be willing to give him the extra care that he needed. Finally, one day we received a call from a woman in Minnesota. She had recently lost her beloved pet of many years and realized that her heart and home felt very lonely without a canine companion. She had spotted Howie on our website and it was love at first sight! She made the trip to Iowa and adopted our sweet little boy. Howie’s new owner took hold of the leash and assured him that they would be friends forever. They are both so lucky to have found each other. We are so happy for Howie! The Mouse Charmer. Smokey is a four year old Siamese Cat. With his chocolate and cream coat, and ocean blue eyes, he is quite the looker. He was surrendered to us because his owner was forced to move and the only place he could find did not allow pets. The gentleman who brought him in was heartbroken to have to give him up, but he had no choice. Smoky will require a very careful and responsible pet owner. He is highly allergic to anything that includes chicken or red dye. We have found a dry food for him that he thinks is delicious and does not bother his allergies. It contains venison and can be purchased at your local veterinary clinic. Smoky is extremely laid back and easy going. He enjoys napping and lounging. His favorite toy is a fuzzy little mouse that he tosses around by its tail. As any Siamese cat owner will tell you, this breed is very independent and expects nothing less than the royal treatment. They are faithful, sensitive, sweet natured cats that are highly intelligent. They are not usually aloof and prefer to be near their owner. Typically, male Siamese cats are more compatible with children than females. If Smokey would be a good fit in your home, please visit him today at Almost Home. He is waiting for you. These pets often spend much more time in a cage before finding their forever home. “Special Needs” can refer to many things such as; a special diet, daily medication, single cat or dog families, ect. These animals require extra special care due to no fault of their own. If you are not in the position to adopt, then please consider sponsoring a special needs pet to help us pay for their care until the right family can take them home. You can choose a cat or dog to sponsor or we can suggest one for you. For just $25 per month, you can make a difference in the life of a shelter pet that is a bit more challenging for us to find its forever home. Once we receive your sponsorship donation, we will post a sign on their cage with your name on it. We will send you a photograph and information of the pet that you are helping. You will receive monthly updates on your sponsored pet until they are adopted. You are also welcome to stop in to give your pet some one on one special attention. You can make a difference in the life of a shelter pet. For more information about sponsoring a pet, please contact us at 515-955-8343 or [email protected]. Oliver, the Gentle Giant I first met Oliver when his owner, Amanda Milligan brought him in for a Dog Wash. He is a two and a half year old Rottweiler. He was purchased from a pet store that most likely bought him from a puppy mill. Oliver has had many health issues and was diagnosed with Addisons Disease. Addisons Disease is a genetic condition in which a dog’s adrenal glands do not produce a sufficient amount of either cortisol or aldosterone. This causes muscle weakness, lethargy, and joint pain. In addition to nearly a dozen pills a day, Oliver requires a medicated bath twice each week. It is difficult for this big boy to get into the bathtub at home so Amanda brought him to Almost Home to use our Dog Wash. She said it was so much easier than bathing him at home. Our Dog Wash service is available to the public anytime during normal business hours. Just call ahead to schedule your appointment. We provide shampoo & towels for you to use. The cost is just $5 per 10 minutes. Call 515-955-8343 to schedule an appointment. Non-Profit Org US POSTAGE PAID Fort Dodge, IA Permit No. 4 725 S. 32nd Street P.O.
