Lakewood Tennis Club by Mrs. Meyers
Lakewood Tennis Club has nineteen members from the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades this spring. We practice three days a week after school. There are three matches this year and they are held after school hours.
The participants have made great improvements in their individual skill levels. We work on skills in forehands, backhands, net shots, and lobs along with working on our serves. The basics of scoring, etiquette, and strategy are also covered. Our goal is to have a good time and learn to enjoy the sport, so students can continue their tennis experience in the JV and varsity tennis programs at the high school.
As their coach, I have really enjoyed being their coach. Thanks so much for all of your enthusiasm as a club!

LMS Social Studies Olympiad Team
Lakewood Middle School announces its winners for the Michigan Council for Social Studies’ 31st Annual Social Studies Olympiad. Michigan Council for Social Studies is an organization of educators from all levels throughout Michigan, who work for the advancement of social studies in Michigan.
Each year this organization sponsors a statewide competition for elementary, middle school, and high school students to showcase their knowledge, skills, and talents in social studies. Students are awarded gold (1st place), silver (2nd place), and bronze (3rd place).
Students work for months researching, organizing, and preparing their projects. This year’s theme is “Don’t Forget the Ladies”. It is based on the famous quote of Abigail Adams from a letter to her husband John Adams, while he was away in Philadelphia assisting Thomas Jefferson in writing the Declaration of Independence.
Many categories required that projects be based on women’s roles and achievements in U.S. History.
Our 2017 SSO Team has Aive members – Katie Acker (8th grade), Connor Feighan (7th grade), Garrett Feighan (5th grade), Landon Makley (5th grade), and Emil Meyers (5th grade). Each student worked on his or her own project. Katie researched women’s suffrage and wrote a poem on it. Connor, Garrett, and Landon researched primary documents and created a journal on these and wrote their own interpretations of these. Connor’s journal was on D-‐Day; Garrett’s was on Gettysburg; and Landon’s journal was on Pearl Harbor. Emil researched women’s role working in U.S. history and created a storyboard poster entitled “Working Women”. Our SSO Team at Lakewood is coached by Mrs. Buffy Meyers. Winners will be honored at a ceremony at Centerline High School on Saturday, May 13th, 2017.
We would like to thank Lakewood Educational Foundation for covering many of the expenses of this team through a grant.
Our Elementary Level Winners are:
Gold (1st Place) – Garrett Feighan for his Primary Document Journal on Gettysburg
Silver (2nd Place) – Landon Makley for his Primary Document Journal on Pearl Harbor
Gold (1st Place) – Emil Meyers for his Storyboard Poster “Working Women”
Our Intermediate Level (Middle School) Winner is:

Summer Activities for Middle School Students
Summer activities for kids should be fun and enjoyable. Children who stay home and are not involved in any sort of physical or mental exercise can get lazy and they will feel tired and exhausted when it is time to return to school in the fall.
Keep your child learning, thinking, and moving all summer long.
• Get outdoors. Take a walk, go for a bike ride, go for a swim, plant a garden, or go @ishing.
• Visit your local library. Many libraries offer free summer reading programs and special events. Explore an interest through reading.
• Volunteer. Many camps, community centers, nursing homes, animal shelters, churches, and community organizations often have opportunities for students to volunteer.
• Attend summer school/summer camp. Summer programs can help kids catch up on classwork, get ahead in an area of interest, or explore a new area such as a sport or art. Colleges and universities have many programs for young people; check out their websites for additional information.
• Get a job. Mowing lawns, caring for animals, or helping with young children can give your child a chance to learn time management skills and money management skills.
• Join a team. Check out local youth sports programs which provide kids with an opportunity to participate in summer leagues in your community.
• Visit local museums or parks. During the summer months many communities offer programs designed just for young people.
