AUGUST | 2016 FROM THE ASSOCIATE DEAN, MICHELE JACOBSEN: I am thrilled to share several big highlights this month! A huge success story in the Graduate Programs in Education office this month is visible on our GPE Examinations Notice Board. Since the end of July, graduate students, supervisors and GPAs have scheduled 29 oral exams for thesis-based students! If this was February in a leap year, that would be ONE PER DAY! Thank you to Sylvia Parks, Edith Mandeville, Stacy Gooliaff, Shelley Enderton, Brenda Tschanz and Cheryl Ohly for their extraordinary support of students. Thank you to all of my academic colleagues who have contributed to the success and achievements of our students through quality supervision and on supervisory and examination committees. In Graduate Programs in Education, we invest in developing a strong research and teaching culture and in creating increased scholarship, award and funding opportunities to support student engagement and success. A key achievement in Graduate Programs in Education in the past year has been a significant increase in the number and type of scholarships, awards and funding achieved by and awarded to our students. In 2015/16, our graduate students were awarded over 2.3 million dollars in funding across the different types of internal and external scholarships, awards, teaching assistantships and appointments administered through Graduate Programs in Education, which constitutes an approximate increase of 30% over the previous year. Additionally, a large number of our graduate students work alongside academic faculty on grant research. In 2015/16, over 70 students had opportunities to work with faculty and receive research funding as a Graduate Assistant Researcher (GAR). Thank you to our academic staff for providing these mentorship opportunities!! Given the scholarship funding awarded to incoming students, and the grants and awards already awarded, GPE is well on the way to matching this success rate in 2016/17.
