August 30, 2016 - Werklund School of Education

AUGUST | 2016
FROM THE ASSOCIATE DEAN, MICHELE JACOBSEN:
I am thrilled to share several big highlights this month! A huge success
story in the Graduate Programs in Education office this month is visible
on our GPE Examinations Notice Board. Since the end of July, graduate
students, supervisors and GPAs have scheduled 29 oral exams for
thesis-based students! If this was February in a leap year, that would
be ONE PER DAY! Thank you to Sylvia Parks, Edith Mandeville, Stacy
Gooliaff, Shelley Enderton, Brenda Tschanz and Cheryl Ohly for their
extraordinary support of students. Thank you to all of my academic
colleagues who have contributed to the success and achievements of
our students through quality supervision and on supervisory and
examination committees.
In Graduate Programs in Education, we invest in developing a strong
research and teaching culture and in creating increased scholarship,
award and funding opportunities to support student engagement and
success. A key achievement in Graduate Programs in Education in the
past year has been a significant increase in the number and type of
scholarships, awards and funding achieved by and awarded to our
students. In 2015/16, our graduate students were awarded over 2.3
million dollars in funding across the different types of internal and
external scholarships, awards, teaching assistantships and
appointments administered through Graduate Programs in Education,
which constitutes an approximate increase of 30% over the previous
year. Additionally, a large number of our graduate students work
alongside academic faculty on grant research. In 2015/16, over 70
students had opportunities to work with faculty and receive research
funding as a Graduate Assistant Researcher (GAR). Thank you to our
academic staff for providing these mentorship opportunities!! Given
the scholarship funding awarded to incoming students, and the grants
and awards already awarded, GPE is well on the way to matching this
success rate in 2016/17.

Mendaglio, to adjudicate the applications for the Werklund Doctoral
Fellowship, a $25,000 award for emerging doctoral scholars. This is the
third year for the Fellowship and the first year that there are two
Werklund Doctoral Fellowship awards. Congratulations to the top
two doctoral students who tied for the 2016/17 Werklund Doctoral
Fellowship, and our honorable mention: 1) Sandra Becker, 2 year PhD

PEER MENTORING CORNER
I hope each of you had a wonderful and restful summer!
Thank you to all our graduate students who have signed up to be a peer
mentor for the 2016-2017 school year! If you have not yet completed
your training session please let me know! Mentoring is a fantastic way
for you to be involved in Werklund and you are providing an invaluable
service to our incoming graduate students!
Welcome to all our new graduate students! If you are interested in
joining the peer mentoring program as a mentee, consider attending
the information session on September 8th at noon. If you join the
program, you will be matched with a more experienced graduate
student as a mentor and as well, be invited to participate in peer
mentor program mixers throughout the year. Having a mentor will not
only help provide you with a smooth transition to graduate studies, but
also you will have someone that can help you navigate graduate life.
We have a wonderful group of peer mentors looking forward to
connecting with you soon!

As of the first week in August,
most UCalgary staff have been
able to retrieve e-mail data that
was lost during the Malware
attack in May. The recovered data
is still slowly populating in inboxes
and calendars so, if you haven’t
received a timely response from
us, please be sure to follow-up.
We cannot guarantee that your email found its way to the correct
inbox!
FUN FACT!
Calgary has officially recorded
206.10 mm of rain for the month
of July, more than three times the
monthly average of 65.5 mm.
There were only eight dry days in
July. With August being the third
wettest month of the year, don’t
put away your rain gear just yet!
Changes to GPE English Language Proficiency Requirements: Effective
2016-2017 University of Calgary calendar publication, the English
Language Proficiency admission requirements for GPE have been
changed to align minimum score requirements across all acceptable
tests to ensure they represent similar proficiency levels. The individual
program pages have been updated to reflect changes where
appropriate.

to all masters and doctoral students.
Fall 2016
EDER 603.05 (L13) / EDER 701.11 (L05) Research Design and Statistics I
On Campus: Monday from 1:00-3:50 pm
Room: EDC 353
Instructor: Dr. Man-Wai Chu
This course serves as a first step in the graduate-level research design
and statistics sequence at the Werklund School of Education – EDER
603.05/701.11 (Research Design and Statistics I) and the subsequent
EDPS 609.01 (Research Design and Statistics II). The purpose of this colisted course is to present masters and doctoral students with an
introduction to basic univariate statistical methods commonly used in
social science research. This course will focus on descriptive and
inferential univariate statistics, sampling distributions, hypothesis
testing, and a variety of statistical techniques (e.g., t-tests, analysis of
variance, correlation, categorical data analysis, and non-parametric
analysis). A thorough understanding of the topics covered in this course
will prepare students for more advanced graduate work in research
design and statistics which aims to prepare them for their own data
analyses.
