Principal’s Message
Welcome to the second quarter of the
2016-2017 school year! We are off to a
great start. We had our first Coffee with
the Principal and welcomed new parents
to our school. If you missed it, our next
one is December 14. Stay tuned for additional information. We inducted 27 new students into East Chicago
National Honor Society Induction Ceremony
We are proud to announce that 26 students were inducted to the 2016-17 National Honor Society on Wednesday,
October 26th. The ceremony recognized Central students who have excelled in scholarship, leadership, service and character. Special thanks to David Lane and Alex
Ortiz for taking the lead in sponsoring the National Honor
Society.
Central High School’s National Honor Society. We celebrated our
honor roll students. We have also completed PSAT (10th graders),
Accuplacer Part I (11th and 12th graders) and NWEA Part I (9th graders)
assessments. Be sure to ask students about their results within the
next month. This upcoming quarter we are planning NWEA Part II
and End of Course Assessments for our 11th and 12th graders.
As newly inducted members to the Great Lakes Athletic Conference,
we officially have our first ever conference championship. Congratulations to our Cardinal Football Team!
We also have a drumline and majorettes this year. The band will be
expanded throughout next semester to include a saxophone, trombone and trumpets. We want to remind everyone at Central High,
parents and students, to get involved in activities including drama
club, choir, robotics, chess club, etc. We have our student council
ready to change the world!
We strongly encourage our parents to get involved. Our Parent Liaison, Mrs. Bishop, is located in our building. She has a lot of information to share with you.
Parents and students, research shows that for every two absences in
school, you are less likely to graduate. Let’s come to school ready to
work and learn. Lastly, as a reminder, students must follow the required school district uniform policy. Thank you for your support! As
a reminder, I'd like to see the Class of 2017 start the trend of “100%
of our Cardinals graduate!”
GO CARDINALS!

Literacy Tip of the Month
Katie Wojtanowicz, Instructional Coach
Increasing Vocabulary
When students have a large vocabulary, it is easier for them to understand text and read fluently. Here are some helpful tips on ways you
can help your student:
 Encourage students to ask for the meaning of unknown words they may come across. Don’t panic if you do not know the definition
of the word! You can team up with your student to find the definition together!
 Turn off the TV and turn on the conversation! Talk about current events- what is happening in the news, the neighborhood, or with
family and friends. Make a conscious effort to use complex language or new vocabulary words so your student can hear them used in
casual conversation.

Play word games! Games such as Scrabble, Boggle, Scattergories, and crossword puzzles can expose your student to new vocabulary
words, as well as give them the opportunity to show off what they already know!
