Consumer Math Syllabus
Expectations
We have a lot to learn and discover this year! We will maintain a positive and
encouraging atmosphere in the classroom so we can all reach our full potential. We will all
make mistakes and have the opportunity to learn from them.
1. I expect you to arrive to class on time and ready to learn.
2. I expect you to treat your classmates and me with respect.
3. I expect you to be free from distractions during class and help your classmates
be free from distractions.
4. I expect you will do your own work and only your own work.
Course Description
Consumer Math will focus on everyday applications of basic mathematical principles. We
will learn to compute wages given different methods of being paid, practice planning for
food and clothing costs and make wise financial decisions in purchasing food and clothing,
examine the pros and cons of buying and renting living space, and calculate the various

Rewards and Penalties for Behavior
You will learn best if you are working. So let’s spend our time working. You will have class
time to work on assignments if class runs smoothly and without disruptions. If you do not
follow the expected behaviors for class (being on time, respectful, focused and helping
others to focus by being quiet and cooperative, and doing your own work) we will discuss
the matter outside of class time, at lunch or after school. I will contact parents and the
principal to work for resolution as needed. The student handbook outlines appropriate
consequences for failure to follow rules and directions and will be used to encourage
responsibility and self-control.
Make-Up Work Policy
Immediately come see me when you return to school. Don’t wait until class time. If you
know you will miss an upcoming day of class please let me know in advance so I can give you
the work and brief you on the lesson. This will ensure you don’t fall behind. After school
make-up tests, extra help or meetings with me take priority over after school activities.
