Where Austin Closes www.austintitle.com/www.alamotitle-austin.com New Resident Resource Page Texas Drivers License, Vehicle Title and Registration Information New Residents New residents must do the following within 30 days of moving to Texas: • Get a vehicle inspection (vehicles must pass inspection before having it registered and titled). • Register and title their vehicle • After the inspection, owners should take the following to their county tax office: - Inspection certification - Proof of liability insurance - Odometer reading if less than 10 years old - Original out-of-state title - Proof of registration - Proof of sales tax payment or current foreign military ownership document - Completed Form 130-U (if applying for a registration only, without a Texas title, please attach a completed Form 272 as well). - Registration fee, title application fee ($28 - $33, depending on the county), new resident tax ($90). NOTE: Additional fees may be due. For more information, contact your county tax office or the Comptroller of Public Accounts. Active duty members of the U.S. Ar med Forces and non-resident, full-time students attending a Tx college or university are not required to title or register vehicles. Driver License New residents are required to get a Tx driver license within 90 days of moving to Texas. All first time applicants for a Texas driver license must: • Apply in person at a Tx driver license office. • Present documents that verify your identity. • Present documents that verify you are a U.S. citizen or have lawful presence. All info on each document must match. Additional documentation may be required to verify information, incomplete names, and DOB. • Present proof of Social Security Number. If you do not have one you must complete a Social Security Affidavit form available at the driver license office. • Present proof of Texas vehicle registration & liability insurance on all vehicles you own. • Complete the application for driver license or identification card (PDF). • Consent to be photographed, fingerprinted, and provide your signature at the time of application. • Pass the written, driving, and vision exam. • Pay the required fee with cash, money order, or a non-temporary check only. • Provide a vehicle for the driving exam and current liability insurance, Texas vehicle registration, and inspection for the vehicle. NOTE: Anyone age 18 through 24 must also provide proof of Adult Driver Education. A new resident moving into Texas, who is at least 16 years or older and has a valid driver license from another state, has 90 days after entry into the state to secure a Tx Driver License. They must: • Apply in person at a Tx Driver License office. • Complete the requirements for an original applicant (see Requirements above). • Surrender your VALID out-of-state learner or driver license, or an out-of-country learner or driver license from France, Canada, or Germany, at the driver license office. The written and driving exams will be waived, but you must still pass a vision exam OR Surrender your EXPIRED driver license. You will be required to pass the written, driving and vision exams. • If you are under age 18, you must pass the mandatory driving test. NOTE: For customer convenience, some locations are pre-scheduling the driving exam. Contact your local Driver License office to see if appointments are offered. NOTE: If you are an active duty military with an EXPIRED driver license from your former state, you must present proof that the driver license is considered valid by that state. You will need to contact your former state for the appropriate document(s). Without such proof, you will be required to pass the written, driving and vision exams. Register your Vehicle Tx residents who own a motor vehicle are legally required to annually renew their vehicle registration. Vehicles may be registered three ways: • Online (For Participating Counties Only) • To register by mail, send the following to your county tax office: renewal notice (keep the vehicle owner's section for your records), proof of current liability insurance, and registration fee plus $1 mail-in fee. • To register your vehicle in person, take your registration renewal notice and proof of current liability insurance to your county tax office. The registration fee is due at this time.
