Research shows that cooking on a charcoal grill can lead to as much as 105 times more carbon monoxide being produced when compared with propane. A typical charcoal grill also produces an astonishing 11 pounds of carbon dioxide per hour, or twice as much as a propane grill. (An electric grill does even worse, producing 15 pounds of carbon dioxide per hour).* Besides producing much less emissions, propane grills greatly reduce your exposure to carcinogens that end up in your food during grilling. Charcoal grills create more smoke and burn hotter, producing toxins that have been linked to some cancers. To ensure that your grilled meat is the safest it can be: trim excess fat before cooking flip the meat frequently when cooking marinate your meat in rosemary (studies show that this significantly reduces toxins; marinades with garlic, onion and lemon juice are also recommended) 1. 2. 3. Based on a study by Tristram West, a researcher with the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Prices are down and savings are up Because of plummeting crude oil prices and natural gas prices that are remaining low, most North Carolinians have been saving money on their propane costs over the past two years. (Propane is manufactured either at natural gas processing plants or petroleum refineries.) By last fall, propane production had reached its highest level in the 22 years the Energy Information Administration has been collecting propane inventory data — more than 100 million gallons! There’s more good news. As the production of propane continues to grow, the ability to transport, store and export this abundant supply has also expanded, lessening the risk of any bottlenecks in the supply chain. What does all this mean for you? Since supply and demand are such critical factors in propane prices, an abundant supply bodes well for residential propane prices in the years to come. That’s just one more reason why it feels good to use propane in North Carolina! And don’t forget, you can always count on your propane company to help you get the most out of your fuel, so you can continue to be safe, feel comfortable and save money. *Energy Information Administration. Safety review for your propane appliances Q: What is better for the environment— propane or electricity? A: Propane is a cleaner Here are some reminders and advice from the Propane Education and Research Council: ➠ Burning questions burning, more efficient fuel than electricity, and as a result, better for the environment. Comparing a propane tankless water heater with a standard electric water heater illustrates this clearly. When appliances are operating properly, propane burns with a blue flame. If you see yellow flames — or notice significant amounts of soot on any equipment — the gas may not be burning completely. This can create carbon monoxide — a colorless, odorless and toxic gas. Arrange for service if you notice a yellow flame or soot on your appliances. When you use a propane tankless unit to heat your water, very little fuel is wasted in the combustion process. In comparison, about two-thirds of the energy used by a power plant to generate and transmit electricity for a water heater goes to waste. That’s why propane tankless water heaters overall produce about 50% less in carbon emissions when compared with an electric water heater storage tank. With a tankless water heater, you’ll also prevent the wasteful “standby losses” you get with the typical electric storage water heater. And since a propane tankless system delivers a virtually endless supply of hot water, you’ll never get trapped in a cold shower again. I DON’T want my wrinkles washed away! Congratulations to Mary Wilson-Wittenstrom, be careful not to damage the gas connector. Older connectors can easily crack if twisted, which can lead to a gas leak. Do you have remodeling plans this spring? ➠ Regularly check the vents of your appliances to make sure combustion gases flow unobstructed to the outdoors. Sometimes, insects, birds and small animals build nests in vent pipes. ➠ Propane smells like rotten eggs, a skunk’s spray or a dead animal. Propane manufacturers add this smell to help alert customers to propane leaks. If you have someone living in your household with a diminished sense of smell (an elderly relative, for example), consider purchasing a propane gas detector as an additional measure of security. Thinking of adding a great room to your house or giving your kitchen a makeover? Do you want to transform your cluttered sunroom into a family-favorite gathering spot?
