Value of the week: COURAGE
KS2 SATs
KS2 SATs testing week is drawing close, commencing Monday 8th
May 2017. For this four day period we would like all Year 6 pupils to
attend an extra special breakfast provision. Please ensure that your
child arrives in school at 8.20am and comes straight to the school
hall.
Over the next few days you will be able to support your child by:

Making sure they get enough sleep.

Making sure they eat breakfast.

Don’t try and frighten them into revising. Make it fun for them. Have a go at
using the revision flash cards that have been previously sent home.

Encouraging them to ask the teacher if they are unsure about anything.

Explaining that the SATs are a way of showing what they know.

Remembering all of the necessities – i.e. pairs of glasses!
The United Kingdom General Election—Thursday 8th June 2017
Currently the country is in the grips of ‘election fever’! During the Easter holidays we
were advised that the Prime Minister has called a ‘snap’ general election for the 8th
June. This is in addition to the local council elections that are taking place on the 4th
May. As you may be aware the school is directed to be used as a Polling Station for
the constituency of Nettlestone and under the direction of The Parliamentary
Constituencies Act the local returning officers have used their powers and once again
require our school to act as a polling venue on June 8th. We have listened carefully
to the views of parents regarding previous school closures for polling and as we had
sufficient notice of the council elections we are able to accommodate Key Stage 1
offsite to safely permit the Hall to be used for the local community to cast their
votes. Clearly the very short notice of the general
election does not give us time to arrange alternative
education. As it is likely that the electoral turnout
will be greater for the general election and in order
meet all safeguarding requirements both for our
school and local community please note that the school
will be closed to all pupil on June 8th.
This weeks fixtures:
Tuesday 2nd May — Year 5 Sailing
CORRECT PE KIT—It has been noted that random sports
gear is coming into school. Please ensure that only your
child’s school PE kit is in school for PE lessons as well as
all clubs. Many thanks for your support.
Literacy Challenge from Miss Beale:
Think of 4 words instead of ‘said’, and use them in 4 different sentences involving speech.
e.g.
“I don’t want to get out of bed,” grumbled Ben.
Don’t forget to use your speech marks and punctuation correctly – use the above example to help you!
This week’s Maths problem form Mrs Jacobs:
Our Young Governors would like to continue the good work from
Cola in the bath
Anti-Bullying week by sharing a weekly community challenge:
A can of cola holds 33 centilitres.
Celebrate Uniqueness
Ask a friend to share a favourite photo of themselves and stick each photo to a
separate piece of paper. Now write on each sheet what makes them unique and
special.
Key Dates for this term:
Peru Class— Wow, what a busy and exciting first week back for Peru class. As part of our RE focus, we have been
looking at 'special clothes' and how they make you feel. We had a special visit by Reverend Robert from St Helens
Church, who showed them the different outfits he wears for different occasions. The children also shared photos
of Mrs Howard's special events and the clothing that she wore for them. The children commented on the
similarities and differences of then and now, which sparked lots of discussions about their own families traditions.
Our topic; 'Into the Woods' has sparked their imagination and some have asked to go on a walk in the woods near
our school, so watch this space.

Spain Class—Welcome back! This term our topic focusses on pirates. We have read the story 'The Night Pirates'
and talk about our favourite characters. We have been creating pirate ship display using paper, paint and fabric. In
maths we have been finding 1 more and 1 less than a number and apply these skills to a variety of problem. During
RE Day, we talked about 'Belonging' and learnt about the importance of Shabbat to Jewish people.

Panama Class—Super week in Year 2! We've been busy learning about our new topic, 'The Magic Finger' by Roald
Dahl and been acting out some of the scenes. In Maths we have been learning about multiplication and division and
in Science we have been talking about Living, Dead and Never alive. We had an RE day on Thursday where we
talked about what we thought the Christian God might look like and learnt about the Hindu god having lots of
different roles. We read the story of Rama and Sita and produced some lovely art work using oil pastels and
charcoal.
Canary Islands Class—Well done year 3 on a brilliant first week back. Even though we are all really excited about
UKSA, it hasn't stopped us from working hard. In maths, we have looked at times tables as well as some tricky
problem-solving tasks. We have used our maths toolkit to answer them. In literacy, we have looked at features of
myths and legends and reading examples. We have also looked at features of castles and introduced our science
topic of light. Well done guys!
SPRING FAYRE’ is nearly upon us! We need your help!
Valenzuela Class — Hope you have all had a great break. PGL........here we come!
Remember to keep SATURDAY 20th MAY 2017 free, 12-2.30pm.
Cuba Class—Welcome back Year 5. We have launched straight back into our learning this week and have already
read quite a bit of 'Charlie and the Chocolate factory'. We have created character profiles of different
characters and looked at different parts of the text to see if we can magpie some of Roald Dahl's vocabulary and
improve on it! In maths we have revisited some of our work on translating shapes and looked at Roman Numerals. In
science we have continued our work on different materials and focused on thermal conductors and insulators. We
have also investigated the best material for making a lunch box using different materials and ice cubes.
We are in need of helpers to run stalls on the day. Please contact Mrs Lucy to offer
your help.
Can anyone offer to bake a showpiece cake for a cake raffle? We will also need budding chefs to produce homemade cakes to sell in the tea and cake room. Please let
Mrs Lucy know if you can do either.
Next week please send in donations for hampers and for the teddy stall to be entered
into a prize draw at the fayre. We are still in need of Beauty vouchers or meals out
vouchers for the Silent Auction. Please ask at any places you frequent who may be
able to help.
Mexico Class—What a productive first week back Mexico class have had revising in preparation for their upcoming
SATs. Huge congratulations to the children for all of their hard work over the holidays on the Maths, Grammar and
Reading ten minute test books, as well as on learning their Maths and Grammar flash cards. Also, a big thank you
to parents for your brilliant support with this. Team points will be awarded and, as promised, a prize draw will take
place for all children handing in a completed set of homework on the first day back. Children are reminded to keep
working with their flash cards, as well as to revise their times tables so that they are able to go into the tests
with these important facts firmly embedded in their minds. Well done Mexico!
