Midwest Region Post Conference Update December 5, 2015

Midwest Region
Post Conference Update
December 5, 2015
This year’s conference, like those in the past, was a blast. Having so many choices of excellent sessions occurring at the
same time, connecting with long-time friends and meeting new colleagues to discuss common issues, and visiting the
French Quarter and the sites and sounds of New Orleans after conference hours made this conference one to
remember.
The 2015 conference proceedings website has been created, and the presenters are beginning to submit their
presentations. Go to http://www.amatyc.org/?page=2015ConfProceedings to check out what’s currently available.
A couple of the highlights of the conference were our keynote speakers. The videos of these keynote presentations will
be available soon on the proceedings website.

AMATYC Foundation Update:
 The Foundation funds AMATYC projects like AMATYC
Project ACCCESS, member grants, the Presidential
Student Scholarship, and other AMATYC special projects.
 The Foundation recently established the AMATYC
Foundation Grants. These grants, big and small, are
available to all members. See
http://www.amatyc.org/?page=Grants for details.
 Also recently established is the Leila and Simon Peskoff
Award that will award a lifetime AMATYC membership to
an AMATYC Project ACCCESS fellow. See
http://www.amatyc.org/?page=PeskoffAward for details.
In 2015, AMATYC members, friends, and
conference attendees donated $23,999 to the
Foundation. AMATYC members from the Midwest
Region donated $6,199 so far in 2015. Because of
generosity of our regional colleagues, the Midwest
Region won the friendly competition among the
regions by contributing the most money. Because
the Midwest Region contributed the most money,
our randomly selected regional member, Patricia
Johnson from Ohio Northern University received a
1-year complimentary AMATYC membership.
Congratulations, Pat!
Thanks for your support!

AMATYC Project ACCCESS is a mentoring and leadership
project for two-year college mathematics educators who
are beginning their careers. Funded in large part by the
AMATYC Foundation, this year-long, multi-year project
sends about 25 new AMATYC members to the AMATYC
conference two years in a row and connects them with a
community of learners.

AMATYC Committee Update
There will be a new committee structure
beginning January 1, 2016. In the
restructuring, one academic committee was
deleted, one committee had a name change,
and four new AMATYC Networks (ANets)
were added. See the listing to the right.
AMATYC academic committees and ANets
focus on a single theme and are open (free!)
to all members. Members are encouraged to
join one or more of the committees or ANets.
The level of engagement varies from group to
group and from year to year. You can be as
active as you would like. One thing is sure:
you will find a community of learners who are
passionate about the group theme.

Steve Hundert, the AMATYC Student Mathematics League Coordinator,
presented the regional team and individual awards. Macomb CC in
Michigan received the team award, and Zachary Obsniuk of Macomb
CC received the individual award. Jon Oaks from Macomb CC accepted
the awards on behalf of the recipients.
Each year at the conference there is a Faculty
Math League contest where colleagues
compete for their region on a faculty version
of the Student Math League test. The top 3
regional scores are combined to make a
regional team score. This year, after a long
drought, the Midwest team consisting of top
scorer, Chris Cunningham (29.5), Scott Barnett
(23.5), and Ben Aschenbrenner (23.5) won the
friendly competition. The newly named Steve
Blasberg Faculty Math League award was
presented to Jim Ham on behalf of the winning
team at the Saturday awards breakfast.
