He enjoys teaching his News and Broadcasting classes because of the creativity, drive, and passion that he sees in his students. There is a positive chemistry that all the students share that you would not find in an average classroom. It makes it easy for everyone to be supportive of each other. The bond Mattison shares with his students is his motivation to give them his best effort every day. “Mr. Mattison is one of the nicest teachers I have ever had and has the biggest heart out of anyone I have ever met. Plus he’s funny,” senior Hope Greve Mattison works in News and Broadcasting one-on-one with junior Katelyn Dicken and Senior Katie Birchall to help them reach their full potential. Marissa Gawel said. The reason Mattison believes he received Teacher of the Year is his compassion and ability to connect with students. He really does try to get to know all of his students so he can see them as individuals. He also tries to maintain really good friendships with his fellow teachers. “I was very excited when he won it. He is a leader among the staff and students, and his leadership goes be- yond just the classroom. He works hard to establish a connection with his students,” teacher Emily Collias said. Born and raised right here in the “Ville,” Mattison attended Roseville High School, where he was a wellrounded student. He did well academically, was involved in sports and leadership groups, and attended many of his school events. Mattison definitely enjoyed high school and made the most out of the experience. During high school, most of Mattison’s inspiration came from his principal, Thomas Evans. He started out being involved only in soccer and Evans opened some doors for him to become more involved in leadership roles at RHS. He was encouraged to join two groups that explored ways to make the school a better learning environment such as Principal’s Forum. The Birth of Venus, located in an B-wing hallway, is a 1483 painting by Sandro Botticelli. It depicts the goddess Venus, having emerged from the sea as a fully grown woman, arriving at the seashore. The brilliant light, soft colors, and flowing style are all meant to suggest beauty This particular painting briefly sparked controversy within the school due to the mild nudity of Venus, but it was later decided upon by the artists that the mural would be censored by altering the original painting. Woman in Undersash, located directly outside the upstairs A-wing, is a 1921 painting by Ito Shinsui. The painting depicts a young Japanese woman adjusting her hair in a mirror. The mild colors and simple line work are reminiscent of other pieces of traditional Japanese artwork. The artists chose this painting to bring artistic diversity to the school. Emma, located right beside Woman in Undersash, is a 2002 painting by Chuck Close in collabora- tion with master printmaker Yasu Shibata. It depicts Close’s niece, Emma, as an infant. The painting uses unique methods of composition, utilizing a grid-like structure and abstract, organic shapes to portray Emma’s face. “I feel really happy and proud. Tan the Right Way vs. No right way to tan Lindsey Polatka Staff Reporter Reba Stanley Staff Reporter Spring is As the end of the year approaches, every girl in the senior class is going to start preparing for the day we have always dreamed of; prom. By beginning to make a checklist of duties to be completed, tanning is definitely in the top five. Although tanning in a tanning salon is frowned upon for being harmful to the skin, it is still going to occur because in today’s society, being tan is something all girls want to be. Before purchasing a tanning package, do some research on what could happen. A disaster of any sort is the last thing a girl needs while getting ready for prom. For starters, whatever you do, do not go in the maximum time when you are a first timer or have not been tanning in a while. People tend to think the longer they go in the faster the tan will appear but, that is not true. Tanning beds with higher maximum times have lower power, so when deciding which level to choose, pick one with a low maximum time. To avoid getting burnt, go in for five minutes or less depending on your skin sensitivity. If you start to feel the slightest itch, get out. From a personal experience, tanning bed burns are not something you want to get. The burnt area gets red, itchy, and very uncomfortable. Every time I go, I make sure I follow these tips so I do not have set backs like that. Another thing to look out for when tanning is turning orange instead of getting tan. People associate tanning beds themselves as being the cause of turning orange, but the real cause of it is the lotion you use. Tanning lotions that have 10 different bronzers in them are more likely to make you orange, single bronzer lotions are what give you the natural tan look. The last thing to do is keep your tan! Drink plenty of water and use a lotion without mineral oils to keep it moisturized. No one wants to pay all that money to get a tan and have it fade away quicker than they got it. If tanning beds are not your thing, spray tans are always a good route, as long as you follow the steps of having a good looking spray tan. If you plan to get one, do not do it the day of prom. A typical spray tan should be done at least two days prior to give it time to set in and looks its best. Back in the early years women would carry around umbrellas, when going out, to keep the sun off of them. Many people, such as the Chinese, believe we are crazy to lie out on a beach and soak up the sun, believing that being pale is being very beautiful. The Chinese have a saying; they believe “if the skin is very light and pale, it can cover up most of any ugly features that you may have.” Many believe that tanning in the natural sun is safer than UV light. Ashley’s Advice Kiara Fluker What is Staff Reporter the biggest lie you’ve ever told, and/ or, what is one way to tell you’re lying? 1. “I’ll start playing with my hair, laughing, and looking down.” Freshman Miriam Logan said. 2. “My biggest lie I’ve told in school is, I left my homework at home, usually when I’m lying I’ll stutter or get sweaty,” Freshman Zackery Taleb said. 3. “I can’t lie without shaking my leg or tapping my fingers, because I get nervous people might not believe me,” Freshman Sahvanna McSwain said. 4. “When I lie I move a lot and my heart starts to beat really hard and fast.” Sophomore Javon Fowler admitted. 5. “I lied and said I didn’t cheat on the test I just took,” Freshman Taylor Williams confessed. 6. “I look down or away when I’m lying so I won’t laugh,” Freshman Nico Savage said. 7. “I did my home work, but it’s at home,” Freshman Alontae Parker admitted to being one I’ve been feeling really unmotivated and depressed, and not only is it taking a toll on my life, but my grades as well. How do I get out of this slump? The first step to having a problem, is admitting you have one, so you are already one step closer to digging your way out of this slump. First off, you have to recognize where you envision yourself wanting to be. You say that you are in an unmotivated slump so it is evident that you would like to see yourself out of it. Try picturing yourself getting your work done, talking to someone about your problems, and seeing yourself succeeding rather than failing. Once you have accomplished this, write down a set of goals with little check boxes next to them. It could be something as simple as, “Turn in the assignment I forgot about a week ago,” or even, “Start talking to so-and-so more.” You see, the thing about digging your way out of this kind of thing, is learning what’s going to make you happier as well. Plan more outings with your friends, or even people you’re acquaintances with. Talk to your teachers, even, because they are not only here to help you learn, but also to help you out as a person in achieving your goals. Another step is thinking positive, rather than negative. Instead of getting up, feeling sleepy, and thinking, “Man, I really want to go back to bed, today’s going to suck!” Say to yourself, “Today’s going to be great!” Or something along those lines that is more motivational than heading back to bed. If you keep your thoughts positive, you will begin to see your life become the same as what is in your mind, and you will become a much happier person. Not only that, more positive rather than negative things will begin happening to you. Remember that your life is all in what you make of it. If you want things to change, you have to be the one to change them, not wait around for the wind to pick you up off your feet and lead you to the door where opportunity knocks, because that does not happen. The key to digging your way out of the slump you are in, is staying positive and setting goals for yourself. ` I have been in a relationship with this guy for over two years and we have just recently ended things, how can I keep myself from feeling down about this whole situation? It goes without say that ending things are hard, especially with knowing the amount of time you have spent with that person now feels like it was all for nothing. It is hard to keep your mind off of things like that, which is okay; you would not be human if you did not at least think about it. The trick is simply trying to keep your mind off of it as much as possible. You can do this by finding every possible way to keep yourself busy. Try not to sit in your room alone and think about things, but rather maybe going over a friend’s house or going out to lunch or dinner. Make plans after school, work, and even on the weekends. A good way is also pretending you do not care, cause then you’ll eventually have yourself convinced you don’t. Of course you are going to, and when it comes to it, vent. Vent as much as you can, get all your feelings and emotions out. Never let your emotions and feelings be kept in a bottle in the back of your mind, because eventually it will explode, and it’s the worst thing seeing yourself that empty because of someone else. Also, never let your ex see you upset. Never let someone know that what they do can affect you that much, because then that’ll only show them that they have you wrapped around their finger. Show them you’re better without them, and eventually, you’ll learn that you are. of his his biggest lies in school.
