Mission Briefing This is your mission if you choose to accept it Work with astronauts, astronaut trainers, scientists and NASA leaders! Compete to have your idea for an experiment built, launched to the International Space Station and carried out in space. You will present your idea and compete against other Mission Discovery teams to produce the best proposal. Be there at Mission Discovery in Renfrewshire, Scotland. You will take on the role of a real research scientist in a project to be carried out in space. You will be assigned to a team to formulate an idea for a experiment that can be done in space. Our US partners have a Space Act Agreement with NASA that enables educational projects to be carried out on the International Space Station. The Team Stephen Bowen - Current NASA Astronaut Steve Bowen is a NASA Astronaut with experience of carrying out 3 Space Shuttle missions to the International Space Station. His space missions involve him travelling almost 17 million miles in space and having completed 638 orbits of the earth. In his space missions Steve carried out 7 space walks, NASA’s most hazardous mission activity. He is a US Navy Captain and former submariner. He has achieved BSc and MA in Engineering and received numerous awards from the US Navy and NASA. Jay Honeycutt - Former Director of Kennedy Space Center Jay is former Director of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and the former President of Lockheed Martin Space Operations. Jay is an engineer who has had almost unrivaled senior level experience with NASA in the Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz and Space Shuttle Space Programs. He was the head of the team that devised simulations for Astronauts and Mission Controllers in NASA’s Apollo Moon Landings program. Sarah Murray - Assistant Chief of EVA, Robotics & Crew Systems Sarah is responsible for the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory space-walking training facility. She has held roles in Astronaut Training and Mission Control. She has been Deputy Chief of Space Flight Training Management. She has been the Chair of the International Training Control Board, responsible for Astronaut training across the ISS partners. She was the Group Leader for the Space Shuttle Communications Group and was selected to lead the Columbia Recovery Office following the Space Shuttle Colombia accident. Dr James W. Rice, PhD - Astrogeologist Dr. James W. Rice, is an Astrogeologist with over 25 years of research experience specializing on the surface geology and history of water on Mars. His career includes working for NASA, Astrogeology Headquarters of the United States Geological Survey, the Mars Spaceflight Facility located at Arizona State University and the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory located at the University of Arizona. Dr. Rice is a Co-Investigator on the Mars Exploration Rover Project (Spirit and Opportunity). *Team composition is subject to change based on availability. Final tea Chris Barber - Space Educationalist Founder of the International Space School Educational Trust (ISSET) and ‘Message to the Moon’. ISSET has been developed to be the UK’s most exciting space educational organisation, running programs in the UK, USA, China, Arctic and India. Chris has had extensive careers in finance and education. He is also a Leadership and Organisational Improvement Consultant. *Team composition is subject to change based on availability.
