Message from the President and Board Chair
Dear Friends of Louisville’s Parks,
Twenty-five years ago – 1989 – was the birth of Olmsted
Parks Conservancy: Happy Birthday to us! And thank you to
the city leaders who helped create this needed
private/public partnership to protect the Frederick Law
Olmsted Parks and Parkways.
We look forward to the next 25 years as we continue to
protect our Olmsted treasures. The Conservancy believes
these extraordinary public parks – and other great parks
which they have inspired – define what makes Louisville an
exceptional place to live and grow.
One hundred twenty-one years ago – 1893 – Frederick Law
Olmsted presented his plans for Shawnee, Iroquois and
Cherokee Parks, and his concept for the parkways that
would connect them. Eighty-six years ago – 1928 – the last
of Louisville’s Olmsted Parks was designed, bringing the
total number of parks to 18, complemented by 6 parkways,
urban oases designed to provide an escape from the city,
within the city, for our families, our friends and ourselves.
Five generations have preserved our Olmsted Parks, and
today each of us can and must clear a path for the

For the past 25 years, the Conservancy has functioned
because of the community’s passion for the Olmsted Parks.
As the 2013 Community Report demonstrates, we depend
on support from foundations, corporate partners,
individuals and Conservancy members, who now number
over 1,000—an all-time high! The Report also takes a look
at the achievements of our incredible hard-working
volunteers. Community engagement in our mission is
indispensable.

2013 FUNDRAISING FOR PARKS
Music, beer, crazy costumes and an alleged niece…in their
own unique ways, were all essential to the Conservancy’s
fundraising efforts over the past year. Our members and
events are instrumental for educating the community about
the value of the Frederick Law Olmsted Parks—and all that
goes into restoring, enhancing and forever protecting these
community treasures.
Membership
Over 1,000 passionate and dedicated people demonstrate
their pride in Louisville’s Olmsted Parks by their annual
membership in Olmsted Parks Conservancy. These folks
know that it isn’t just by luck that our city can brag about its
magnificent park system; it takes attention, hard work,
funding and engagement to restore, enhance and forever
protect our special Olmsted legacy – a park system that
benefits the entire community. We are proud of all our
members and invite others to join in the Olmsted Parks
movement!
Boo La La Halloween Ball
Our 14th annual Boo La La Halloween Ball was our most
successful event yet! Over 450 guests masqueraded in
their most imaginative costumes, dining, donating, and
dancing the night away! Guests also mingled with
Fredericka von Olmsted, the alleged great-great-grandniece
of Frederick Law Olmsted, who inspired the crowd with her
eloquent descriptions of Louisville’s magnificent parks. The
audience showed its appreciation by donating generously
during the Pledge for the Parks in support of the
Conservancy’s mission.
Special Events
Breakfast for the Parks
In May, the Power of the Olmsted Parks Breakfast
illustrated how our Olmsted parks helped transform our
city and how they continue to impact the well-being of
individuals. After a few energizing calisthenics, the guests
heard comments from Mayor Greg Fischer and park-user
Jim Dearing, whose use of Iroquois Park helped restore him
to great health. The full-house audience demonstrated its
appreciation of the message via generous donations that
morning.
This year, some special community partners engaged with
the Conservancy’s mission: Holy Grale Pub/Restaurant,
Momma’s Pickles and Mustard Restaurant, Beer Run
organizers and Forecastle Music Festival each chose to
donate a portion of proceeds from their own sales to
benefit the Olmsted Parks! Olmsted Parks Conservancy
loves its community partners—thank you!

PROJECTS IN THE PARKS
Olmsted Parks Conservancy is committed to managing
projects that ensure healthy, beautiful parks throughout the
Frederick Law Olmsted Park System. In 2013, we continued
to make improvements by partnering with Metro Parks and
utilizing grants and donations from individuals in our
community.
Project: Restoration Planting
Park: Shelby Park
For the second consecutive year, Olmsted Parks
Conservancy received a $40,000 grant from MSD’s Urban
Reforestation Program. This grant helped the Conservancy
purchase and plant 150 native trees in Shelby Park. The
planting plan was guided by the original 1911 Olmsted
plan. Not only will these trees help beautify this
neighborhood park but they will help reduce stormwater
runoff in the area.
Project: Restoration Planting
Park: Seneca Park
For the fourth consecutive year, the Conservancy received
a $4,000 grant from the LG&E and KU’s Plant for the
Planet Program to plant trees and shrubs. This grant is
matched by Conservancy funds for a total of $8,000 to
purchase and plant 55 trees representing 18 species
around the Seneca Golf course. Prior to planting, we
removed a large amount of bush honeysuckle and
porcelain berry from this area. Planting native species
in the disturbed areas is the best method to combat
re-growth.
Project: Emerald Ash Borer Treatment
Parks: Multiple Parks
Project: Invasive Plant Removal
Parks: Seneca and Iroquois Parks
Thanks to a $10,000 grant from USDA/NRCS, Olmsted
Parks Conservancy field staff has started removal of
invasive shrubs, such as bush honeysuckle and privet,
in many areas of Iroquois and Seneca Golf courses.
Olmsted Parks Conservancy field staff and Metro Parks
golf personnel will monitor these removal areas in the
coming years to prevent the re-emergence of unwanted
invasive plants.

The Emerald Ash Borer is an exotic, metallic-green colored
beetle that has killed millions of ash trees in the United
States since 2002. To help combat the infestation in the
Louisville Olmsted Parks, the Conservancy has been
treating some of the larger trees in the parks. In 2013, the
Conservancy treated an additional 46 Ash trees thanks to a
grant from the Kentucky Division of Forestry. The treatment
lasts for 3 years. Thanks to additional donations,
specifically earmarked for these efforts, the Conservancy
will continue to treat more trees in 2014.
PROJECTS IN THE PARKS
Project: Water Fountains
Parks: Seneca and Cherokee Parks
Thanks to a donation from the Cherokee Road Runners Association, the Conservancy has embarked on a program to improve
the water fountains in Cherokee and Seneca Parks. The first phase of the project included replacing the water fountain at the
playground area in Seneca Park. We installed a new freeze-proof fountain in October 2013, freshened up the area around it and
mulched. The second phase of the project, starting in 2014, will be to inspect other water fountains in the two parks and make
any needed improvements to keep water fountains functioning.
Project: Pavilion Painting
Parks: Multiple Parks
Thanks to a $1,200 grant from Metro Louisville and more than 60 volunteers, four park pavilions were scraped and repainted.
Volunteers worked on pavilions in Boone Square, Shawnee Park, Tyler Park and Elliott Park. Along with painting the volunteers
also helped with mulch and general clean up.

2013 VOLUNTEERS FOR PARKS
Olmsted Parks Conservancy relies heavily on help from
volunteers. Whether working in the park, in the office or at
an event, our volunteers are instrumental in improving the
Frederick Law Olmsted Parks across the city. We appreciate
every minute each person donates toward bettering our
parks.
Dedicated Groups
Group volunteers are a major contributor to the work in the
parks. We invite neighbors, school groups, garden clubs,
and large and small businesses to help contribute to a
healthy park. Here are a few special groups whose
dedication to the parks has surpassed many others:

who gave their time, talent and energy to our treasured
parks. There are some special individuals who went above
and beyond last year in their commitment to the parks:

If staff needed help with a job big or small Janet, who
volunteered 240 hours, will help!
Scott Choffel - Outstanding Park Steward
Scott volunteered over 140 hours planting trees and
removing invasive plants!
Nathan Slaven - New Park Champion Volunteer
As a new volunteer, this high school student saved the lives
of many trees during the numerous volunteer sessions he
attended!
Dedicated Park Stewards
We are excited to report a successful year with our Park
Steward training. We conduct the training twice a year and
many dedicated to their help in the parks.

the Olmsted Parks.
Bingham Park Neighbors - Friendly Neighbors of the Year
This motivated group continues to enthusiastically support
their Bingham Park.
KYMBA - Best User Group
Kentucky Mountain Bike Association is passionate about
caring for the trails they use in Cherokee and Seneca Parks.
Kentucky Center for the Arts and Brown-Forman Outstanding Local Business/Organization
Making a great team, over 40 volunteers from these two
organizations donated 240 hours improving Elliott Park.
