Since 13th century the city has been growing quickly and nowadays it’s the biggest city of Holland with its 750,000 inhabitants. Amsterdam is known by its canals and old, beautiful houses, which are being protected. It is also known by its tolerance. Actually, it has become a symbol of European liberalism. There are many famous sights in Amsterdam. Art museums, Anne Frank House and many more places are worth seeing. If you go to Holland, you should go and see at least Van Gogh museum, Anne Frank House and Rijksmuseum (which is Vincent van Gogh the national museum of Holland). On our trip we visited Anne Frank House, Van Gogh museum and Rijksmuseum. Unfortunately, cameras were not allowed to take in, so we couldn’t take any pictures. After visiting Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum we went shopping in one of the streets full of little stores, shops and restaurants. Then we met in the Dam square, which is the centre square of Amsterdam. There we saw the Koninklijk Paleis, the Royal Palace, but only from the outside. On the other side of the square is a big white stone pillar, which is a national monument. Amsterdam is a good place to visit: it’s near everything, so you can go where you want. Distances are short, wherever you go. In the museum there are many paintings of Vincent van Gogh. There are also paintings made by other artists. Some of van Gogh’s paintings were destroyed in the Second World War. We visited in the museum only for an half hour so we didn’t get to look at the paintings in such a careful way, but we did see the most famous painting like “Vase with twelve sunflowers” and “The Potato Eaters” which was one of his first big works. At the beginning of the museum tour were his first paintings and at the end were his last Anne Frank was born in 1929 in Germany. Anne’s family decided to move to Amsterdam in the Netherlands, because Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany and started his Nazi regime. Her parents were Otto Frank and Edith Frank. She had also a big sister, Margot. They were Jews so that’s why Nazis persecuted them during the Second World War. Margot got an order to report to hard labour in a work camp. That’s why they decided to hide in the Annexe next to Anne’s father office. There were also four other people with them. Four office personnel helped them bringing food and everything what they needed. On Anne’s 13th birthday she got a diary from her father. Anne started writing in her diary, which she told everything what happened in the Secret Annexe. paintings. You could see how the colours changed as his mind turned darker. We found the museum very interesting. It is important to know something about the world-famous artist. There is always a long queue into the museum because many people want to see van Gogh’s paintings. In the museum there is a souvenier shop. There you can buy for example posters of van Gogh’s paintings, cards, pens, cups and much more of van Gogh. Vincent van Gogh was born in the Netherlands in 30th of March in 1853. He lived in many countries and had many jobs. He killed himself after a long struggle of mental illness. Frank’s family had to hide there over 25 month before Nazis found them and they had to go to concentration camps, like Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz. The family was separated from each other and they had to be there over nine month. That was hard for them, because they hadn’t food enough and there were many illnesses spreading in the horrible conditions of the camps. In early 1945 Anne Frank died of typhus in Bergen-Belsen one month before the concentration camp were set free. She was only fifteen years old. Otto Frank was the only person of the family who survived and he returned to Amsterdam. One of the family’s helpers Miep Gies saved Anne’s diary and after the war Otto and Miep decided to published it. Now the diary is one of the most widely read books in the world. Anne Frank House Anne Frank house is situated Prinsengracht canalside house in 263 in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. This is the house where Anne and her family were in hiding lived and the place where Anne wrote her diary. There are quotations from Anne’s diary, historical documents, objects, photographs, and video tapes serve in telling the story. Visitors are allowed to walk around the Annexe following a marked route and they are asked to be quiet and respectful. We found the house interesting, thought-provoking and scary because of the historical truth.
