Wild hogs live in large groups in the Mississippi wetlands. They dig in the
ground to find food, destroying grasses and small plants covering the ground.
They also dig large, shallow holes that they roll around in when the holes fill
with water. This further disturbs the ground cover.
Which of these environmental changes describes the result of wild hogs
invading a habitat?
A. Erosion due to destructive forces
B. Weathering due to destructive forces
C. Deposition due to constructive forces
D. Sedimentation due to constructive forces
5.

B.
Ball Will Move Straight Back Toward Sarah
No Motion, Ball Will Stop
C.
D.
Ball Will Move Back to Sarah’s Right
Ball Will Move Back to Sarah’s Left

Students read the information below about Venus on the NASA (National
Aeronautics and Space Administration) website.
Venus is a dim world of intense heat and volcanic activity. Similar in
structure and size to Earth, Venus’s thick, toxic atmosphere traps heat in
a runaway “greenhouse effect.”
Which of the following phrases best describes Venus?
A. Hot, sunny, and smaller than Earth
B. Explosive, nearly airless, and larger than Earth
C. Clear, quiet, and with the same land forms as Earth
D. Cloudy, poisonous, and about the same size as Earth
7.
Two rock samples are placed in water. Sample A floats, but Sample B sinks to
the bottom.
Which statement describes the two samples of rock?
A. Sample B has more mass.
B. Sample A has less volume.
C. Sample B has a greater density.
D. Sample A has a higher freezing point.

Hammerhead Sharks
Hammerhead sharks live in warm coastal waters in oceans around the world.
During the day, these sharks can often be found in groups, called schools. At
night, hammerhead sharks prefer to hunt for food alone. They eat fish, stingrays,
and other small sea animals.
The hammerhead shark gets its name from its wide, flat head. Its eyes are on the
outer edge of its head, and it has a proportionally small mouth on the underside of
its head. Like most sharks, hammerheads have the following characteristics:
• 8 fins
• Sharp teeth
• Gills
• Soft skeletons
There are many hammerhead shark species. One species commonly found along
the southern coasts of the United States is the scalloped hammerhead shark
shown in the following picture.
Scalloped Hammerhead Shark
Recently, a new species of hammerhead shark was discovered off the coast of
South Carolina. This new species, called the Carolina hammerhead, is closely
related and very similar to the scalloped hammerhead species. In fact, it is very
difficult to tell the difference between a Carolina hammerhead and a scalloped
hammerhead just by looking at them. The main body difference between the
two species is that the Carolina hammerhead has fewer vertebrae than the
scalloped hammerhead. Scientists confirmed the Carolina hammerhead species by
studying its genetic material.

9.
Which of the following statements is an inference that can be made from the
information about hammerhead sharks?
A. Hammerhead sharks sometimes eat large sharks.
B. Hammerhead sharks have 8 fins and gills like other sharks.
C. The number of hammerhead shark species will continue to increase in the
future.
D. Eyes on the outer edge of the head allow hammerhead sharks to see in
many directions.
10. Which conclusion does the information in the passage suggest about the
relationship between scalloped hammerhead sharks and Carolina
hammerhead sharks?
A. The two species look very similar but are very distantly related.
B. The two species probably evolved from a recent common ancestor.
C. The two species likely evolved separately to look very similar to each
other.
D. The two species are more closely related to other types of sharks than to
each other.
11. Hammerhead sharks are top predators in their ecosystems.
How would an increase in primary and secondary consumers, such as
stingrays and fish, likely affect a population of hammerhead sharks?
A. The hammerhead sharks would likely run out of habitat.
B. The hammerhead sharks would likely have access to more food.
C. The hammerhead sharks would likely be eaten by more predators.
D. The hammerhead sharks would likely experience more competition.

12. Parker and Grace completed an experiment with two blocks of different sizes
but of the same mass. They timed how long it took each block to slide down a
ramp. The following setup shows the blocks at the top of the ramp.
A
B
Block A went down the ramp faster than Block B. They concluded that Block A
was faster because it had a greater density than Block B.
Which of these is another reason Block A was faster than Block B?
A. Block A was faster because it had less volume.
B. Block B was slower because it had less volume.
C. Block A was faster because it had more surface friction.
D. Block B was slower because it had more surface friction.
13. Which layer of Earth is entirely liquid?
A. Inner core
B. Outer core
C. Mantle
D. Crust

using bright colors in the logo and for the shoe laces. Student 2 suggests
adding foam inserts in the tongue and midsole. The following diagram shows
some parts of a shoe.

Which student’s design makes it a more functional athletic shoe?
A. Student 1, because bright colors would be more in style
B. Student 1, because the bright colors would help sell more shoes
C. Student 2, because the shoe would add cushioning for a runner
D. Student 2, because the inserts would make the wearer look taller
