Getting Started in Marion Virtual School / FLVS


Student must be in grade 6 – 12 and not over the age of 19
Student must have Internet access (high speed preferred) and a working telephone.
HOME EDUCATION STUDENTS START HERE
1) Withdraw from district school – obtain a “Notice of Intent to Establish a Florida Home
Education Program” form from the counselor/registrar, complete the form, and have the school
representative stamp it.
2) Bring the completed form to the home education office within 5 school days - 1614 S.E.
Fort King Street, Ocala, Fl. 34470. (MTI campus) Phone 352-236-0595.
For students not currently enrolled in a Marion County Public School, a “Notice of Intent to
Establish a Home Education Program” can be obtained at the home education office, where it
must be stamped.
ALL OTHER STUDENTS START HERE
3) Open account/ request courses with Marion Virtual School - complete online
registration at: http://www.marion.k12.fl.us/schools/mvs - Click on “Apply for Admission.”
(If an account has EVER been set up in the past, do not open another account. The MVS office
can check this and supply previous login information if not known – call 352-236-0569)







On the MVS homepage, click “Apply for Admission” in the log-in box.
One the next screen click New Students, click I Live in Florida, then select Marion. On
the drop down menu, select type of student and click on “Continue.”
Next, Browse Catalog in the orange bar, select school level and the appropriate
education (grade) level, then click on the subject and the specific course you wish to
take (All Middle School courses beginning with M/J – level 1 for 6th grade, level 2 for 7th,
level 3 for 8th – High School students will not receive credit for M/J courses).
Click the course segment(s) – meaning first and/or second semester, choose the start
date on the calendar, select Marion Virtual School from the District Franchise menu in
the box on RIGHT and Add to Backpack.
Continue with registration or Add more courses – public/charter/private school students
may select up to 3 courses, home education students up to 6.
Create Your Account by filling in all of the required information in the boxes.
Read and sign the Commitment Statement. Both student and parent must sign.
4) Open Parent/Guardian account and “verify” courses – PARENT must do this.
 Go to Login box on MVS home page (http://www.marion.k12.fl.us/schools/mvs), click
“Apply for Admission” – next screen, click Sign up for Parent/Guardian Account on
upper right – follow steps and receive username and password. Guardian can now

verify courses, access student records, monitor progress and communicate with
instructors.
Both Guardian and Guidance approvals are needed for course placement.
5) Guidance Approval
School counselors should NOT approve courses for home education students - This is done by
the Marion Virtual counselor when the “Notice of Intent to Establish a Home Education
Program” form is received.
Guidance Counselor approval is REQUIRED for public, private and charter school students.
6) Complete Welcome Call
 Once courses are approved (status “CRC”), student is assigned to a teacher (status “CA”).
 Teachers contact student via online account (not personal email) with instructions, and
to schedule a Welcome Call.
 Student/parent logs in to MVS account (http:/www.marion.k12.fl.us/schools/mvs) and
check for messages from teacher.
 Student/parent responds to request to schedule welcome call appointment.
 Student and parent must participate in Welcome Call – this is the basic orientation to
the course/all aspects of course completion.

7) Activation - teacher will activate student upon completion of Welcome Call – student has
access to all course modules and begins working.
