Math Connections for Parents Grade 4 Module 5 Fraction Equivalence, Ordering, and Operations Welcome to Module 5 of the EngageNY curriculum. In this module, students will explore finding equivalent fractions, and will continue this study to include mixed numbers. They will compare fractions with and without common denominators using fraction strips and number lines. Students will add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators, and will even begin to think of multiplying fractions by thinking of repeated addition. Important Words and Concepts Benchmark: standard or reference point by which something is measured. For this module, we will talk about benchmarks to compare fractions. Common Denominator: when two or more fractions have the same denominator Denominator: bottom number in a fraction Line Plot: display of data on a number line, using an x or another mark to show frequency. Mixed number: number made up of a whole number and a fraction Numerator: top number in a fraction Compose: change a group of unit fractions with the same denominator to a single non-unit fraction or mixed number Decompose: change a non-unit fraction or mixed number to the sum of its parts or unit fractions Equivalent fractions: fractions that are the same size or amount Fractional unit: for example half, third, fourth KEY STANDARDS Multiplication and Division within 100 Students in fourth grade are expected to know, from memory, all products of two one-digit numbers. Continue to practice these facts at home. Mastery of the multiplication facts will also help students as they explore finding common denominators. Make a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Explain why one fraction is equivalent to another fraction with fraction models Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators Understand how to add and subtract fractions with like denominators Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions (3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8) Solve word problems with addition and subtraction of fractions Multiply a fraction by a whole number For more resources, please visit www.newarkcityschools.org → Parent Math Academy K-5 Math Connections for Parents Grade 4 Module 5 Fraction Equivalence, Ordering, and Operations Graphics and Strategies you may see… Students can find equivalent fractions by multiplication, using a fraction strip and a number line Fractions are compared by using fraction strips and by finding common denominators Students will convert fractions like 7/3 into mixed numbers of 2 1/3 Students will also use area models to show finding common denominators. For more resources, please visit www.newarkcityschools.org → Parent Math Academy K-5 Math Connections for Parents Grade 4 Module 5 Fraction Equivalence, Ordering, and Operations Two fractions with unlike denominators can be added once a common denominator is found. Students will use tape digrams to show how they could find a common denominator. A Line Plot can be used to show data. This line plot uses fractions to show distances some students ran in miles. Students will multiply a whole number by a fraction by using a number line and the associative property 18 8 = 16 8 2 2 8 8 + =2 For more resources, please visit www.newarkcityschools.org → Parent Math Academy K-5
