Autumn Term
ENGLISH
Year 6 will have the opportunity to find out about the
lives
of
famous
people,
including
World
War
Two
leaders in the biography and auto-biography topic. They
will also be studying the novel ‘An Eagle in the Snow’
by Michael Morpurgo as well as ‘Carrie’s War’ by Nina
Bawden. This latter study involves lots of role play
activities and the children will be able to empathise
with
Carrie.
Then
they
will
have
the
opportunity
to
compare extracts from diaries entitled ‘Children of Conflict’
based on WW1 and WW2. Later in the term, Year 6 will also
become
familiar
with
some
classical
narrative
poetry
extending their appreciation and understanding of poetry eg
‘The Lady of Shalott’ and ‘The Listeners’. Then they will
have the opportunity to become budding journalists reporting
on
historical
events
and
current
affairs,
orally
through
radio pod casts and written reports produced to a deadline.
MATHS
Following the new curriculum, our maths units this
half-term will include:
 Number:
counting,
partitioning
and
calculating
 Measurement
 Geometry
 Cross-curricular activities
Pupils are given weekly skills tests to improve
their basic maths skills and speed tests to see how
quickly they can complete a multiplication grid.
We
will use MyMaths and Times Table Rocks – an online
ICT Maths program (used by many Secondary Schools),
which the children can also use at home.

SCIENCE
The Nature Library
Can you face the Garden Centre challenge? The
children
will
be
studying
how
living
things
are classified into groups according to observable
features,
including
micro-organisms,
plants
and
animals. Are all micro-organisms harmful? The children will
be carrying out a variety of investigations involving microorganisms;
penicillin
learning

and
finding

out
time;
how
about
the
contribution of different scientists and their discoveries.
Body Pump
How does our circulatory system work? The children will be
studying the main parts of the human circulatory system
and describing the functions of the heart, blood vessels and
blood.
They will also recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs
and lifestyle on the way their bodies function.
COMPUTING
How do games companies create their Apps?
The pupils will be learning how to plan, design and create
an app for use on an electronic device.
FRENCH
Using
rhymes,
stories
and
songs,
the
children
will
be
learning numbers, greetings and responding to classroom
phrases.
They
prepositions,
will
also
conjunctions
be
and
able
to
some
identify
nouns,
adjectives,
linking
knowledge of French to English grammatical terms.

Year
6

Two.

Do you recognise ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’ or ‘Run Rabbit
Run’? The children will be listening and responding to a
variety of World War Two songs. They will take a war time
picture and compose music and write lyrics to accompany
it. The children will also have the opportunity to continue
to learn the ukulele weekly.
PE:
Tennis:
The

children will be developing their tennis skills and
competing
in
mini-matches
to
show
whether
they’re ready to face a future career in Tennis.
Gymnastics: How creative are you? The children will be
producing their own routines to a piece of music involving
twisting and rotation.
Netball: Develop your shoulder pass; overhead pass and
chest pass in this unit. Children will be learning skills
and will be involved in mini-games.

Forest School
The children will be exploring the fantastic outdoor learning
area and will learn about teamwork, co-operation and trust
through a range of practical activities.
PSHE
‘Being me in my world’ is our first theme this half term.
We will be exploring the theme of a fresh start and the
challenges that we will face in year 6. We will be setting
personal targets to aim for at the end of the year.

Our first theme is ‘Beliefs and Practices’ where they will be
exploring the question: What is the best way for a Muslim
to show commitment to God? Secondly, Christmas - How
significant is it that Mary was Jesus’ mother?
ART
Year 6 will study the work of some famous artists and
will
become
young
artists,
developing
their
skills
using
pastel by creating an abstract WW2 piece.
DT
Our topic will be ‘Making Bread’ where the children will
research different types of bread today and in the past.
They will design and make their own bread - and then
taste!
