Rule 24: adding -cious and -tious
If the root word ends in –ce use -cious
vice- vicious
grace- gracious
space- spacious
For all other root words use –tious
ambitious
cautious
infectious
nutritious
Rule 25: adding -cial and –tial
If the root word ends in a vowel use –cial
official
special
artificial
If the root word ends in a consonant use – tial
partial,
confidential
essential
Rule 26: adding -able/-ably
Use -able ending if there is a related word ending in ation
considerable, considerably, (consideration)
adorable, adorably (adoration)
If the root word ends in ce or ge keep the ‘e’
changeable, noticeable
Rule 27: Adding suffixes beginning with vowels to words
ending in –fer:
The r is doubled if the –fer is stressed
referring, preferred, transferred
The r is not doubled if the –fer is not stressed
reference, referee, preference
Hyphens
Hyphens are used to join a prefix to a root word especially if
the root word begins with a vowel and the prefix ends with a
vowel
co-ordinate, re-enter, co-operate
Words containing the letter string ough
ought, bought, thought, brought, fought
This group of letters can be used to spell a number of
different sounds
rough, tough, enough

Homophones
These are common homophones that are often confused
aisle: a gangway between seats
isle: an island
aloud: out loud
allowed: permitted
affect: usually a verb ( the weather may affect our plans)
effect: usually a noun (It may have an effect on our plans)
altar: a table in a church
alter: to change
ascent: the act of ascending (going up)
assent: to agree
bridal: to do with a bride at a wedding
bridle: head piece for controlling a horse
cereal: made from grain
serial: a succession of things one after the other
guessed: past tense of the verb guess
guest: a visitor
heard: past tense of the verb hear
herd: a group of animals
led: past tense of the verb lead
lead: to be in front/ a heavy metal
morning: before noon
mourning: grieving for somebody that has died
past: refers to a previous time
passed: Past tense of the verb to pass (He passed me in the
street)
