Until relatively recently, thrift was considered a virtue. Saving for a rainy day was seen as sensible. Conspicuous
consumption was vulgar. People planned for the future, and saved accordingly. The idea of being in debt was anathema;
lay-by - that is, waiting until you could afford an item - was preferred to credit. There was a certain social cachet in being able
to say that you had saved for the future and had insurance against the possible financial impact of disaster.
Banks were pivotal in educating people about the virtues of saving, and
cautious in providing credit. They encouraged the rapid repayment of debt.
SHIFTS IN CULTURE ATTITUDES
In a single generation, these values have been reversed.
Instant gratification is now encouraged and has become the norm.

Thrifty (positive connotation) Tight (negative connotation)
Underpinning the disaster in financial markets in 2007 to 2009 is the fact
that banks have become major boosters
of a credit-and-consumption boom, through issuing credit cards
(what we call ‘plastic money’) or through in-store credit cards, mortgages,
unsecured loans and even micro-loans to those that can ill afford it. Banks
now like us to be in their debt, and a larger proportion of their profits than
ever before derive from keeping us that way. as a result, households have
gone on a consumption binge. “I consume, therefore I am.” Exert from the
book ‘How much is enough’ by Andrew Bradley, Arun Abey, and Andrew Ford.

Siyaziphuhlisa Nursery Project, Camdeboo National Park
Phone: 049 892 6128 Fax: 049 892 3456
The Siyaziphuhlisa (meaning “we are developing ourselves”) Nursery Project was launched
in November 2014. We are five co-operative members from the community, who collectively grow and
sell plant seedlings. We make a living through selling the seedlings; which include vegetable seedlings,
indigenous plants and flowering plant seedlings. We actively started selling in February 2015. Our vision
is to start small and later to develop the project into something which will provide for the needs of our
community. Furthermore we will recruit and employ more members from town to join us. We also take special
bulk orders to plant. We are open every day from 07h00 til 18h00; when you can come see the nursery.
Members invite your colleagues and business
friends to join Graaff-Reinet Chamber of Commerce.
