T. Green English 11 Week 7– 09/19 - 9/23/2016 Learning Targets for this week: I can use vocabulary context clues in my writing and to aid my reading comprehension. I can analyze the themes and literary elements of a poem. I can recognize and explain characteristics of Realism and Romanticism found in a film. I can recognize and explain characteristics of American Realism found in a poem. I can relate the content of a work of literature to elements of the author’s life. I can provide textual evidence to support my assertions in a poetry interpretation. ALCOS Standards: 11.1-6;11.8-9; 11.19; 11.22-23; 11.28-30; 11.34-40 Writing –Students will respond in complete sentences to questions on E.A. Robinson’s “Miniver Cheevy.” Students will use standard formal English to explain characteristics of Realism and Romanticism found in Sherlock Holmes. Vocabulary – Students will review academic vocabulary including, but not limited to allusion, alliteration, theme, simile, metaphor, personification, meter, rhyme scheme, direct characterization, indirect characterization, and repetition. Students will begin ACT prep. vocabulary set 4- definitions, sentences (providing an appropriate context), and synoyms/antonyms. Grammar- Students will review rules and complete exercises for subject and verb agreement focusing on compound subjects and indefinite pronouns as subjects. Literature – Students will work in small groups to read and respond to guided reading questions for E.A.Robinson’s “Miniver Cheevy.” Students must interpret meaning and theme as well as identify and analyze literary elements (alliteration, allusion, meter, rhyme scheme, metaphor, simile, etc.) Students will work individually to answer analysis questions for which they must draw conclusions from the poem and provide textual evidence to support their responses. Students will complete “one-page” character sketches on Richard Cory, the townspeople, or Miniver Cheevy.
