MARYLAND GENERAL ASSEMBLY
VISITING THE
STATE CAPITAL
A GUIDE
What services are available for visitors?
I
f you have decided to visit Annapolis to experience Maryland
government and history in action, whom should you call to
schedule a visit? What services are available for visitors? What
else can you do in Annapolis? Here are some guidelines for
planning a successful trip to the Maryland General Assembly and
Annapolis.
Whom should you call to schedule a visit?
Library and Information Services of the Department of Legislative
Services arranges a variety of educational programs for adults, students,
and international visitors to the Maryland General Assembly. Last year
more than 10,000 visitors toured the Legislative Complex in Annapolis
through this service. When you call Library and Information Services, ask
to speak to someone about scheduling a visit. Let us know as much in
advance as possible, particularly if you want to visit while the legislature
is in session (January through April). This is the busiest time of the year
and there is a limit to the number of groups we can accommodate on any
single day. Meeting space is limited.
What information do you need to schedule a visit?
• Your name and phone number where you can be reached during
working hours.
• Name of your school/organization, ages or grade level of students and
number of people in the group, including chaperones or interpreters.
• Date of the visit with alternative dates in case of scheduling conflicts.
• Arrival/Departure times. How much time do you have to spend in
the legislative complex?
• Nature of your visit. Are you interested in an overview of the
legislative process, or a specific topic or aspect of the legislature? If your
group has special interests, let us know so we can design a program which
meets your needs.
• Legislator(s) associated with your group. If you don’t know, we’ll help
you find out who they are. Your legislator(s) may be available to speak to
your group during your visit.
• Videotape about the legislative process, the composition of the
General Assembly, and the duties of its members.
• State House tour, including a visit to the House and Senate chambers.
• Informational tour of the legislative complex. This can include a
“behind the scenes” tour of the legislative support services offices, the
Senate and House office buildings, the committee hearing rooms, and the
tunnels linking the legislative buildings.
• Observation of session from the House or Senate Galleries. (This
option is only available when the legislature is in session between January
and April.
• Observation of committee hearings.
• Visit with one or more legislators from your group’s legislative district.
• Information packets, available upon advance request, containing an
assortment of information about Maryland and the legislative process.
The Legislative Services Building cafeteria, (located on the Ground Floor,
phone 410-946-5146 or 301-970-5146) is open year around and can
accommodate groups of 30 or fewer. For larger groups, please call 410946-5146 to make reservations in advance. The Senate Office Building
Canteen and the State House Canteen are very small and are open only
during session between January and April.
