PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The great efforts made by the
Executive Team along with the
fabulous weather made the 2010
UTC Tennis Season one to be
enjoyed by all. Our tennis nets
came down on Oct 16, 2010, so
the UTC clubhouse is now
officially closed for the 2010
season.
2010 was full of activities as in
other years. I am very grateful
for the work completed by the
UTC Executive and volunteers
who made 2010 as successful
as it was in prior years. It is the
time and efforts put in by all of
these volunteers that has made
this club as vibrant as it has
been over the many, many years
of its existence. Thanks to Sally
Coles and Mark Fainblum, our
tennis pros, who supported our
tennis lessons and camps
throughout the season. Thank
you to all of our monitors and of
course Zac Manankil, our
Clubhouse Manager for an
amazing season.

with recruiting volunteers for UTC are Lorraine Eaglesham, Gord
Llewellyn, and Heidi Strassguertl. We are pleased to announce
the following UTC Board of Directors for the 2011 tennis season:
UTC Board of Directors
It gives me great pleasure to welcome the following into their
new roles at UTC.
Gord Llewellyn – Vice President/Monitors Director
Stella Spisak – Membership Director
Sherwin Mendes – Secretary
Treasurer – Laurie Tarascio
Recreational Director – Aleen Roecken
Social Director – Nancy Lin
Junior Development Director – Maria Budiono
Courts/Clubhouse Director – Open Position
Communications Director – Mike Gannon
Continuing in their positions are:
“ I play each point like
my life depends upon it”
…Rafael Nadal
Heidi Strassguertl – President
Lorraine Eaglesham – Competitive Director
Elisabeth Tan – Courts Availability Director
Michael Roecken – Tournament Director
Stepping down form their positions:
David Spisak – Vice President and Courts/Clubhouse Director
After 7 years of service, I would like to give a huge thank you to
David Spisak for all his hard work over these years. Not only did
he maintain the Vice-President role, he was also instrumental in
hiring and training our monitors and keeping our courts and
clubhouse in tip top shape. David made many, many
contributions to Unionville Tennis Club over his 7 years.
Here are just some of the examples:
1) Resurfaced 6 Hard courts during his tenure and laser-grading of
clay courts plus improved the sprinkler system.
2) Added on a deck, so that our tennis viewers can watch tennis
being played on courts 1-4 and on courts 5 to 7.
3) Renovated the existing clubhouse rather than pursue a new
clubhouse – to which he oversaw all the changes and upgrades
including new kitchen, new bathroom fixtures, new windows, new
flooring, new roof and painting.

President’s Message …continued
David was very good at taking action to foresee what needed to be done and then
following through with it. Thanks so much David.
Marg Esaw – Secretary
I am very thankful for all her assistance on maintaining the Executive Minutes and
Agendas, setting up our Executive Meetings and helping in other events such as
Opening Day and the Year-End Parties over the last 2 years. Marg’s positive and
cheery attitude will be greatly missed.
Alison Horne - Treasurer
Alison Horne accurately maintained our financial books over 8 years of service to
Unionville Tennis Club. She was the key player in ensuring all of our financial books
were up to date, UTC’s spending was on track, and paying all of the club’s bills on
time. Thank-you Alison.
Trish O’Brien – Social Director
Throughout the 2 years that Trish acted as Social Director, she did an excellent job
running all our Friday Night Socials and with great turnouts might I add. In addition,
she organized both the Opening Day and Yearend/AGM parties that I know you
have all enjoyed attending. I wish you all the best.
Michael Hayward – Membership Director
Michael played a key role in maintaining our on line membership for the second year
of its existence. Michael has been very busy with his full time job to which a lot of
travelling was involved. His wife Trish O’Brien, was able to help out and the
combined efforts of these two enabled us to have membership updates and shoe
tags for all our members. Thank you both.
Ann Lowe – Recreational Director
Ann was very helpful in ensuring that we had all the volunteers in place for
Wednesday Round Robin, UTC Women’s, Men’s and Junior Ladder, Friday Mixed
House League, and Tuesday Morning Ladies House League. She also kept us up to
date on what was happening within these programs on a month to month basis.
Thanks again for your help.

SOCIAL NEWS
Thank you so much to all the volunteers
and UTC players who came out to support
us for yet another summer of fabulous
Friday Night Social Round Robins! We all
had a blast while enjoying the perfect
combination of fun, friendship, food, and
tennis. Once again the gods were smiling
on us and we had PERFECT sunny warm
weather for all 4 evenings, for the second
year in a row. The first 3 evenings were
extremely well attended with over 40 tennis
players participating. The final RR was on a
holiday weekend therefore it was less busy,
but that was fine as it meant more food for

Wednesday Night Round Robin( Mike
Gannon)
RECREATION NEWS
UTC Recreation is ending on another
successful note this year.
Men's Ladder (Rajeev Seth) Another
successful year with 69 players signed up,
and approximately 12 teams.
Top 3:
1-Florin Prunoiu
2-Raj Maraj 3-Anthony Tan
Ladies Ladder (Kathy Moran)
The Unionville Ladies Ladder had another
successful year. There were 24 players
participating this season which ran from
May 1 to September 6. Nine new
members joined the ladder this year.
Congratulations to Nancy Lin who ended
the ladder season with 51 points. She was
followed closely by Joyce Lui with
45 points and Elisabeth Tan with 30
points.
All the ladies who participated deserve a
pat on the back – it can be
challenging to get your matches played
during the busy summer months. Well
done!
Friday morning mixed round robin (Josie
Rochon)
This round robin was a tremendous
success this year, with over forty gals and
gents enjoying some fun tennis since
early May. A big thank you to all from
Josie, for the dedication and the great
matches and laughs all round. She is
looking forward to next Spring but in the
meantime, it is business as usual on
Friday mornings.
Tuesday morning round robin (Gayle
Eisenberg) was also well attended this
year. It was a repeat of a popular event,
with many regulars returning.
Another great year of Wednesday evening
round robin tennis is almost over. The
program was oversubscribed at the
beginning of the season but quickly settled
down with about 90 members. The weather
of course has been better than usual with
only a couple of washouts so far the whole
season. The last round robin was held on
October 13th just before the club nets came
down on the 16th and the year end round
robin social will follow on Wednesday the
20th.
The format tried as a pilot last year was
continued this year, by popular demand,
with 2 sessions taking 6 courts each from
6:30pm until 8:00pm and 8:00pm until
9:30pm. The first session used prearranged, randomly selected, foursomes
(with a little tweaking from Mike), and the
second session used the winners and
losers moving up and down respectively
approach. Our thanks to Richard Cheung
and Julie Stark for looking after the second
session.
A survey was conducted among all the
round robin players recently to learn about
any concerns and suggestions for
improvement. Overall, members were very
happy with the program as is. Enough
people however commented on the early
start for the first session as being a problem
for them that we will look at options for the
start time next year. On a personal note, I
have really enjoyed meeting and playing
with you all. Enjoy the rest of the season!

COURTS UPDATE
The official Nets-down day is scheduled for
Saturday, October 16th.
We would like to encourage volunteers to
come out and help with this activity as more
hands make the work easier.
Courts 8 & 9, originally scheduled to be
resurfaced the second week in September,
will be resurfaced starting on Tuesday,
October 12, weather permitting. These
courts will be unavailable for the remainder
of the season.
We have concluded upgrades to the clay
court sprinkler systems, replacing the last of
the original sprinkler heads and raising all
the sprinkler heads off the ground. These
changes should prevent the clay granules
from getting stuck in the sprinkler
mechanism and provide for unrestricted
rotation of the sprinkler heads resulting in an
improved distribution of water on the court
system.
David Spisak
Vice President
COURTS AVAILABILITY UPDATE
We have had a busy season, but with the
new advanced booking for Monday
evenings, more members were able to have
a time slot where they do not have to wait for
a court.
It is always recommended to watch the
email blasts from our Communication
Director and to check the updated monthly
calendar to find out the best chances to get
a court.
We welcome any input from all members to
try to improve random play.

COMMUNICATIONS UPDATE:
It is our mandate to ensure that UTC
members are ultra-informed with respect to
club activities. You are encouraged to visit
the website, which is constantly being
updated to reflect our variety of tennis
offerings. For example, our Tournaments
Directors, Michael and Aleen initiated the
on-line posting of club tourney draws this
year, which allowed participants to track
their opponents as well as confirm their
game times.
If you missed something on the website,
email blasts were frequently sent out to
highlight important events. We tried, for
example, to inform you when weekend court
times were reduced due to Tournaments, so
that you could better plan your own games.
Of 1140 members, 920 subscribe to these
blasts. Your next major News Flash will be
promoting Early Bird Registration in
2011.Don’t miss it! Go to the website:
