POLICE OFFICER - MINIMUM HIRING STANDARDS:
The following are requirements of the Loveland Police Department (LPD) for law enforcement
officers:
Age
Applicant must be at least 21 years of age at the time of taking the written exam. This
requirement is necessary to ensure all police applicants will be able to legally enter all premises
that LPD responds to. There is no maximum age limit.
Education
 Proof of high school graduation or a certified GED.
 Associates Degree or 90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours from an accredited college or
university and a minimum of 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
 Colorado POST certification or Provisional certification by hire date.
Citizenship
An applicant must be a United States Citizen, in order to be hired.
Military Record (when applicable)
The applicant must have been discharged under honorable conditions (fair employment laws
apply).
Driver's License
The applicant must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License prior to being hired. It is understood
that out of state candidates won't have this at time of application, but they must get one prior to
accepting a job. Driving is an essential function of this position with LPD.
Residency Requirement
The applicant must live within the Loveland Police Department’s residency limit (12 miles)
within 6 months of your hire date.
Personal Appearance
While on duty and or in uniform, any and all tattoos, body art, or brands must be covered by the
normal lines of the uniform and must not be visible through the uniform or clothing.
Salary Range Annual $57,900 - $77,800
Police Officers at the Loveland Police Department are on a step pay plan. Officers receive a pay
increase on the anniversary of their hire date. There are a total of seven (7) steps in the pay plan.
Additional Hiring Standards:
The following Loveland Police Department hiring standards and information are some of the
areas that are considered during a LPD background investigation. The Department is most
interested in an applicant’s life history as a complete picture.
LPD understands that, at times, people encounter challenges in their lives. During the
background investigation process LPD is interested in learning greater detail about those
challenges, as well as the lessons the applicant has learned and the changes the applicant has
made as a result.
Please be forthcoming in your responses, as LPD expects honesty in this process.
Criminal Record
 An applicant’s criminal record, including all arrests, prosecutions, deferred prosecutions,
‘Alford’ pleas, and non-conviction information will be thoroughly assessed and may be
grounds for disqualification.

The following examples will be disqualifying:
A. Any adult felony conviction.
B. Any misdemeanor or felony conviction while employed in a criminal justice
and/or law enforcement capacity.
C. Any domestic violence conviction.
D. Any misdemeanor conviction which affects the candidate’s ability to lawfully
possess firearms.
E. Any conviction for any offense which may affect Colorado P.O.S.T. certification
as outlined in the Colorado P.O.S.T. manual (accessible at
www.coloradoattorneygeneral.gov), OR the conviction or commission of any
other offense which would undermine the candidate’s credibility as a Loveland
Police Officer.
F. Dishonesty, deception or providing misleading, inaccurate or incomplete
information at any stage of the testing or hiring process.
Employment History
 An applicant’s employment history, including any terminations or leaving an employer in lieu of
termination, will be thoroughly assessed and may be grounds for disqualification.
Residence History
 Inconsistent or questionable residency history within the last seven (7) years
Financial
 An applicant’s credit history will be thoroughly assessed and related decision-making
issues may be grounds for disqualification. The following are areas of concern:
A. Theft
B. Embezzlement
Traffic Record
 An applicant’s driving record will be considered on a case by case basis. The following
will be disqualifying until the time parameters have been met.
A. Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Driving While Ability Impaired (DWAI),
Reckless Driving and Negligent Driving, or Hit & Run Driving within 5 years of
application deadline date.
B. Suspension/revocation of your driver’s license within five years of application
deadline date.
Drug Use
 Loveland Police guidelines for applicants relating to drug use: An applicant’s drug use
will be looked at on a case by case basis. In order to be considered the most competitive
candidate and to increase the likelihood of continuing on in the process, the closer the
applicant is to the timeline listed for the drug(s) in question the better.











MARIJUANA: An applicant has not used Marijuana within three (3) years prior to the
date they took/take the related Police Officer Exam
COCAINE/CRACK: An applicant has not used cocaine or crack within the five (5)
years prior to the date they took/take the related Police Officer Exam
CLUB DRUGS: An applicant has not used club drugs, such as, but not limited to:
Ketamine, GHB, Rohypnol, or MDMA (ecstasy) within the five (5) years prior to the
date they took/take the related Police Officer Civil Service Exam
HALLUCINOGENS: An applicant has not used any Hallucinogens; PCP, Angel Dust,
Wet, Phencyclidine, LSD, Mushrooms, or Psylocybin, within the five (5) years prior to
the date they took/take the related Police Officer Exam
OPIATES: An applicant has not used Opium, Morphine, or Heroin within the five (5)
years prior to the date they took/take the related Police Officer Exam
STIMULANTS: An applicant has not used Methamphetamine, Crank, Crystal, Ice,
Speed, Glass, or Amphetamine within the five (5) years prior to the date they took/take
the related Police Officer Exam
AEROSOLS: An applicant has not inhaled aerosols, sometimes referred to as Huffing
(paint) or Whippits (Nitrous Oxide) or used Khat within the five (5) years prior to the
date they took/take the related Police Officer Exam
Prescription Medication. Demonstrated pattern of illegally abusing prescription
medication
An applicant has not used any illegal drug(s) while employed in a criminal justice and/or
law enforcement capacity
An applicant has not manufactured or cultivated illegal drug(s) for the purpose of the
sales/marketing of the drug(s)
An applicant has not sold or facilitated the sale of illegal drugs.
