KENAKENA SCHOOL 12 Donovan Road, P.O. Box 1441, Paraparaumu Beach Phone: 298 4011 Cell: 027 7818315 [email protected] [email protected] Check out our website www.kenakena.school.nz Keep your child safe: If absent please contact the office before 9.30am Thursday, 8th September 2016 Term 3 Week 7 Dear Parents and Caregivers, He mihi tenei kia koutou nga matua, me nga kaitiaki o a tatou tamariki. Tena koutou katoa Kim Kelly and Tatia Downer have organised Kenakena School’s participation in the 2016 Tournament of Minds following successful participation in the last four years. TOM is a problem-solving programme for teams of students from both primary and secondary schools. Students work together to solve a demanding, open-ended ‘longterm’ challenge over a six-week period. They have 10 minutes to present their solution to a panel of judges and audience on Tournament Day. The team also participates in an unseen ‘spontaneous’ challenge on Tournament Day. TOM is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem-solving, to demonstrate their creative skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way. The TOM programme looks beyond academic achievement and understands that the pursuit of excellence knows no boundaries. It offers real-world benefits: working in teams, effective problem-solving, thinking outside the square and the use of technology are values that employers are searching for in the employee of tomorrow. Good luck for your involvement in the regional tournament in Palmerston North this weekend! The photographs below show our two teams working on their Spontaneous Challenge skills during a lunchtime practice. ARTSPLASH DANCE Last Friday night I had the privilege of watching our forty-two strong Artsplash Dance Group on stage at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington. The great thing about the Kenakena performance is that it was student-composed and choreographed under the guidance of our Performing Arts Programme teacher, Sam Edwards. Just a handful of students in the group had any previous dance experience, yet they managed to achieve an excellent performance in front of a full house at the MFC. Congratulations! It was a joy to watch you on the big stage! The photograph below shows the group at the Wellington Railway Station on their way to the MFC. A video of the group’s performance can be viewed on Kenakena School’s Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/Kenakena-School-393417717371782/ . THANK YOU, LIONS CLUB OF KAPITI! On Tuesday night I was invited to a meeting of the Lions Club of Kapiti, where I was presented with a grant of $5000 to assist with the re-surfacing of our school swimming pool. This is a fabulous boost to our pool upgrade project. I was invited by the club to do a presentation to its members on the business of running a successful school, which was very well received by club members. See a photo of the presentation on the Kenakena School Facebook Page. ROALD DAHL DAY Every year, children around the world celebrate the birthday of one of their favourite authors, Roald Dahl. This September 13th would have been his 100th birthday, and so we are celebrating this at Kenakena. Children are invited to dress up as any character from one of his books and there will be a parade in the afternoon for the whole school to enjoy. Children from Mr. Morrison's class will perform readings of his poems for the whole school. At lunch time there will be some quiet fun activities in the library and some readings of parts of his books by teachers. There will also be plenty of Roald Dahl books for children to read for themselves. This will be a fun day that supports one of the greatest children's authors of our time – looking forward to seeing some great costumes! TIPS FOR PARENTS Connecting in the car I am an Aucklander, so I basically live in a car. I recently did depressing calculations about how many hours of my life I have spent commuting on Auckland’s clogged roads. It is years! Not all of it was a tragic waste of time, though. When commuting on my own I love listening to podcasts and audiobooks, but the best times were when I was driving with my kids. Apart from mealtimes, car time was perhaps the easiest place to talk with the children. You are close to each other in a private space and because you are staring straight ahead, rather than straight into their eyeballs, conversations seem a lot less threatening. We had our most significant sex-and-dating talks while driving. I learnt about their world of school and friends. We swapped jokes. Yes, it was very dispiriting to find I'd been talking to myself for a while because I did not notice they had plugged their headphones in and tuned out. But generally it worked very well. Here’s a tip: ask your kids to find a radio station they like or ask them to put on their playlist. Maybe you won’t enjoy it as much as your favourite hits-of-the-90s station, but you will instantly have something to talk about. One other tip: they are watching you. Nothing reveals character quite like driving. I don’t think I need to say any more. John Cowan SCHOLASTIC BOOKS The brochure for Issue 6 should have come home with your child/ren. The closing date for this Issue is Thursday 22nd September. For each order placed Kenakena School will receive 20% in value to obtain books and resources for our school. Decorate or cover it so no one can see what you’ve hidden inside. 4. Drop it off at the school office between now and the end of term three. Thank you! NO SUSHI ON FRIDAYS Please note that there will no sushi available on Fridays for the remainder of this term.
