13 A man’s heart pumps about 5.5 quarts of blood each minute. Six quarts equals 24 cups; one cup is the same amount as in the milk carton that comes with the typical school lunch. ©2016 American Heart Association. Have students predict if the container will hold six quarts of water; then test it by inviting students to fill the cartons with water and pouring them into the container. Have the class track how many cartons have been poured in the container, stopping when the total equals 24 or when the container is full. Use the results to compare the amount the container will hold to the amount of blood pumped by a man’s heart each minute. ©2016 American Heart Association.
