History of Her Majesty’s Theatre Seats Her Majesty’s Theatre Ballarat was built in 1875 and underwent major alterations in 1898 and throughout the 20th Century. This building - known as the Academy of Music in 1874, Her Majesty’s Theatre in 1898, and, from 1966 to 1988, the South Street Memorial Theatre - has both historical and architectural significance. It is a rare survivor of a group of Ballarat and Bendigo theatres which, in the 19th Century, rivalled those in Australia’s capital cities. Her Majesty’s Ballarat theatre is arguably the oldest operating theatre in Australia. The existing seating at Her Majesty’s Ballarat was installed in the late 1930’s and was second hand at that time, being repurposed from another site owned by Hoyts Cinemas. As part of the $6 million refurbishment in 1990, these seats were recovered and somewhat refurbished to extend their life until now. New seating will provide increased comfort for patrons with modern seating technology and wider seats. www.ballarat.vic.gov.au 7 A free and convenient hop-on hop-off service in the Ballarat CBD, the City Circle bus visits 10 stops on Sturt Street in 10 minutes. Stay prepared Landowners are reminded to continue to monitor properties and maintain the regrowth of fire hazards throughout the entire fire season. City of Ballarat officers will continue to inspect for possible hazards during the fire danger period and will continue to issue Fire Prevention Notices. To date more than 300 notices have been issued to landowners with properties identified as fire hazards this fire season. BBQ safety Did you know that faulty BBQs have started many fires in Australia? BBQs need to be checked regularly for loose connections and faulty hoses, especially if they haven’t been used in a while. Split hoses or leaking connections can cause a fire that may cause injury or death. • • • Checking BBQs is very easy: Just put soapy water on connections and hoses when the gas is turned on, if bubbles appear this means there is a leak. Clean BBQs regularly to remove build-up of fats and oils, reducing the risk of a fire. When cooking is completed, make sure the gas supply is switched off. Local Laws For All In 2016, the City of Ballarat is leading a community safety initiative to address local issues including: unregistered animals; vehicles parked on nature strips, blocking access ways and footpaths; and unsightly or potentially hazardous properties (threat of fire). Authorised officers will be undertaking regular inspections and will issue infringements where appropriate. Residents are encouraged to ensure they are compliant with Council’s Local Laws and the Road Management Act. The City of Ballarat thanks residents for their support in ensuring a safe and pleasant community. Want to know more? Visit www.ballarat.vic.gov.au Collecting the leaves Do’s & Don’ts for disposing leaves There are many thousands of deciduous trees in Ballarat. In late Autumn and Winter, literally millions of leaves fall on our city’s streets. City of Ballarat staff collect leaf litter on a street-by-street basis as well as responding to individual requests. Leaves can also be taken to the City of Ballarat’s Transfer Station in Gillies Street. • DO Sweep leaves from gutters and footpaths into small piles and place them on the nature strip or kerbside. For collection, call City of Ballarat Customer Service Centre at 5320 5500 or lodge a Customer Request online at www.ballarat.vic.gov.au • Compost and mulch the leaves from your property. If you don’t have composting facilities, store leaves in large plastic bags with handfuls of blood and bone meal, and dampen with water for future use. • Create mulch from Plane Tree leaves: go over them with a mower with a catcher attached as these leaves do not compost well. DON'T • Put leaves in the garbage bin. Compost is best. • Burn leaves - you risk a fine of $500. www.ballarat.vic.gov.au 13 mad hatter's TEA HOUSE Run away with your imagination, lose yourself down a rabbit hole and give in to going a little mad, at this very special Mad Hatter's Tea Party. jason hodges From our TV screens at home to Ballarat’s ‘communal backyard,' Jason Hodges is getting out in our Botanical Gardens! Passing of the Miner’s Cottage 5 to 15 May An enchanting exhibition of lavish Australian gold jewellery, 19th Century BLING explores little known parts of history and the impact of the unique designs on the socio political landscape of Australia and beyond. The jewellery created for miners (diggers) and their families when they struck gold was ostentatious, and often incorporated non-traditional emblems like the mining tools they used including picks, shovels, spades, pistols, sluices and pans. It was the “bling” of its day and represented diggers’ claims for legitimacy and power. More than 150 rare, fascinating and exquisite pieces are on exhibition, tracing the development of wearable decorative art and significant objects from the Australian goldfields 1851 to 1901, plus some key international examples. 19th Century BLING is a located at M.A.D.E. Next Gen 2016 features a range of media and a variety of themes — ideas and reflections for us all to contemplate. There are also works depicting nature, from fine botanical drawings, screen-printed flora and fauna to a range of fossil-like raku bugs. One work considers the metaphysical masks we wear, while another looks at the way artists explore concepts of mental health through ceramics and photography. William Kentridge: Drawn from Africa Ejdne Eben, 'Between the Lines' On show till Sunday 10 April, 2016 The Art Gallery of Ballarat is hosting an exciting exhibition by South African artist William Kentridge, on tour from the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. Kentridge was born in South Africa in 1955 to parents actively involved in supporting anti-apartheid activists and the injustices of apartheid. He felt very strongly that art was not an abstract activity, rather always had political meaning, and looked to some of the great artists of the past whose work had explored social issues and exposed injustice and inequality. As an artist, Kentridge also explored a range of media, using film, drawing, printmaking and tapestry design, even working on innovative opera productions and sculptural forms, crossing the boundaries of art categories. An introductory video featuring a documentary about Kentridge by outstanding US art documentary organisation ART21, accompanies the exhibition. The Art Gallery of Ballarat is open 10am to 5pm every day, 40 Lydiard Street North, Ballarat. ENTRY IS FREE. Want to know more? Visit www.ballarat.vic.gov.au REGISTER YOUR PET TODAY Do I need to register my pets? Yes. State legislation requires all dogs and cats over the age of three months be registered with the Council that they reside. When is pet registration due? Registration renewals are due by 10 April each year. Mark it on the calendar so you don’t miss this important date. How does registration help pets? If your pet is lost, registration information helps the City of Ballarat reunite the pet with its owners. When you register, a plastic identification tag is supplied, which can be easily attached to your pet’s collar. The registration fee includes a State Government Levy, which funds responsible pet ownership programs. What are the penalties for not registering my pet? How much does it cost to register a pet? What do I do if my animal has died or no longer lives at my home? The registration fee varies depending on factors including if your pet is micro-chipped and/or desexed. Full payment details and a list of prices are available on the registration form and at www.ballarat.vic.gov.au Please complete the applicable section on the renewal form and return it to the City of Ballarat. Holders of Pensioner Concession Cards receive a 50 percent reduction on all fees, except for dogs declared as Dangerous/Menacing or Restricted Breed. How do I renew my pet registration? Your personalised renewal form will arrive in the mail. Complete the form and submit with the relevant payment. Payment options include: BPay, online, by post, at any post office or in person. Full details are available on the registration form. If you do not have a renewal form, visit The Phoenix, 25 Armstrong Street South, to complete your registration.
