THE GREENEST GARDENS IN BALLARAT
How do the Gardens stay so green? It’s a commonly asked question at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens.
The heritage-listed Ballarat Botanical Gardens uses non-potable (non drinkable) water to maintain its almost 4 hectares of lawns, plant collections and trees
that have been planted over the last 159 years. Around 50 megalitres of reclaimed water is used annually within the Gardens and on the Lake Wendouree foreshore.
A sustainable water supply for the Botanical Gardens, Lake Wendouree and a number of other sporting venues was developed with the completion of the Lake
Wendouree sustainable water supply project. The project included stormwater harvesting projects including Paul’s and Redan Wetlands, and the supply of treated
wastewater from Central Highlands Water’s Treatment Plant.

Ballarat Station Precinct
Redevelopment
Located in the heart of Ballarat, the Ballarat Station is a gateway to the city, a
CBD landmark and one of the grandest Victorian-era station buildings in the state.
The project: The Ballarat Station Precinct redevelopment will revitalise and transform the
precinct into a commercial and cultural hub; a buzzing, thriving precinct for locals, commuters
and visitors to enjoy. It will increase visitation and raise the profile of Ballarat, as well as create
140 local jobs and will act as a catalyst for ongoing business and investment opportunities.
In 2014, the Ballarat Station Precinct Master Plan was developed, providing short, medium and
long term opportunities for the Precinct, all aimed at strengthening Ballarat’s reputation as a
key regional destination for business and tourism activities.
The commitment: In 2015, State Government announced $25 million for the development
of an integrated Hotel and Exhibition/Convention Centre. This location is expected to include
more than 100 hotel rooms, large flexible spaces for exhibitions and conventions, and a range
of quality retail and dining offerings. The project also includes the restoration of the Heritage
Goods Shed, attracting a new mix of commercial activities.
The City of Ballarat has been working closely with lead agency Regional Development Victoria
and VicTrack to deliver the project.
Project status: Expressions of interest from potential developers/operators to deliver the
project closed at the end of 2015. A streamlined planning process has been approved and a
Ministerial Advisory Committee appointed to provide independent advice on the planning and
approvals processes.
In December, a community information session was well attended by local businesses
and residents.
Future works: Nomination of developer/operator, detailed design and planning process,
and further community engagement scheduled in 2016. Construction to begin in 2017.

Take the Safe Ride Home
A new CitySafe Taxi Rank at Camp Street was launched
in December.
Due to patron demand, the rank at Lydiard Street North (opposite the Railway
Station) was relocated to Alfred Deakin Place, Camp Street. There is also a
CitySafe Taxi Rank at the corner of Lydiard and Sturt Streets.
The new Camp Street Rank has dedicated CCTV and lighting, a pedestrian
safety barrier and leaning rail for patron comfort, and rubbish bin. The rank is
located near the newly-built Alfred Deakin Place 24-hour public toilets, in the
heart of late night entertainment precinct.
The location was developed in consultation with key stakeholders including
the Ballarat Taxi Co-operative, Victoria Police, Ballarat Liquor Accord members,
and the City of Ballarat Community Safety Advisory Committee. It supports
the commitment to activate the CBD after dark including recent events such
as the Archibald Prize, 24-hour Experience, public art installations and
Backyard Tasters.
The new Camp Street rank project was funded by $60,000 from the Taxi Services Commission. The City of Ballarat provides the security operations at the rank.
The CitySafe Taxi Ranks are a community safety initiative of the City of Ballarat and key partners, supporting positive behaviour and enjoyment of Ballarat’s late
night entertainment precinct. Two security guards staff each rank, from 1am to 6am, following Friday and Saturday nights. More than 80,000 patrons use the
CitySafe Taxi Ranks each year.
The CitySafe Taxi Rank Program is supported by the Ballarat Taxi Co-operative, Victoria Police, Ballarat Liquor Accord and the City of Ballarat Community Safety
Advisory Committee.

Well done Ballarat!
Thanks to all the local residents who joined the City of Ballarat and many local
businesses in supporting the Ballarat Regional Industries (BRI) Christmas paper
and cardboard collection.
Eight tonnes of cardboard and three tonnes of paper were kept out of landfill, which
according to BRI saves greenhouse emissions to the equivalent of driving a vehicle 1 3/4
times around the world or powering an average Australian home for 6 years and
4 months.
Ballarat Regional Industries (BRI) is a not-for-profit organisation that provides employment
opportunities for people with disabilities, and in doing so, offers a range of high quality
business services and products. BRI collects cardboard, paper and newspaper all year
at its sites: 6 Neerima Crescent, Wendouree, and 108 Walker Street, Sebastopol.

- Bring home the best seat in the house Along with the new redevelopment, Her Majesty’s presented the public with a unique opportunity to purchase the existing Theatre seats.
In January, hundreds of theatre lovers placed their bid and a total of 464 seats will find a new home in interesting locations including
many local homes, cafes and businesses, schools and dance clubrooms, and 150 seats will deck out the Murtoa Mechanics Hall.
The Seat Sale was the creation of the Her Majesty’s Fundraising Committee, a passionate group of local people dedicated to the
preservation of our historic theatre. Bidders were encouraged to name their price for a piece of Ballarat’s history, and more than
$13,685 was raised for future restoration of Her Majesty’s Ballarat.
History of Her Majesty’s Theatre Seats
Her Majesty’s Theatre Ballarat was built in 1875 and underwent major alterations in 1898 and throughout
the 20th Century. This building - known as the Academy of Music in 1874, Her Majesty’s Theatre in
1898, and, from 1966 to 1988, the South Street Memorial Theatre - has both historical and architectural
significance. It is a rare survivor of a group of Ballarat and Bendigo theatres which, in the 19th Century,
rivalled those in Australia’s capital cities. Her Majesty’s Ballarat theatre is arguably the oldest operating
theatre in Australia.
The existing seating at Her Majesty’s Ballarat was installed in the late 1930’s and was second hand at that
time, being repurposed from another site owned by Hoyts Cinemas. As part of the $6 million refurbishment
in 1990, these seats were recovered and somewhat refurbished to extend their life until now.
New seating will provide increased comfort for patrons with modern seating technology and wider seats.

FIRE RESTRICTIONS STILL IN FORCE
Fire restrictions for the City of Ballarat are in place until Sunday, 1 May 2016, and any burning off activity requires a permit. Failure to have a permit
is an offence under the Country Fire Authority Act Section 38. Penalties include fines of up to $18,200 and/or 12 months imprisonment.
The CFA have a zero tolerance for illegal burns and police will be notified. Permits to burn are only issued to broad acre burns of stubble, grass and other farming
land. Permits to burn are not issued for piles of green waste, or waste material.
Stay prepared
Landowners are reminded to continue to monitor properties and maintain the regrowth of fire hazards throughout the entire fire season.
City of Ballarat officers will continue to inspect for possible hazards during the fire danger period and will continue to issue Fire Prevention Notices.
To date more than 300 notices have been issued to landowners with properties identified as fire hazards this fire season.
BBQ safety
Did you know that faulty BBQs have started many fires in Australia?
BBQs need to be checked regularly for loose connections and faulty hoses, especially if they haven’t been used in a while.
Split hoses or leaking connections can cause a fire that may cause injury or death.
•
•
•
Checking BBQs is very easy: Just put soapy water on connections and hoses when the gas is turned on, if bubbles appear this
means there is a leak.
Clean BBQs regularly to remove build-up of fats and oils, reducing the risk of a fire.
When cooking is completed, make sure the gas supply is switched off.
Local Laws For All
In 2016, the City of Ballarat is leading a community safety initiative to address local issues including: unregistered animals;
vehicles parked on nature strips, blocking access ways and footpaths; and unsightly or potentially hazardous properties
(threat of fire).
Authorised officers will be undertaking regular inspections and will issue infringements where appropriate. Residents are encouraged
to ensure they are compliant with Council’s Local Laws and the Road Management Act.
The City of Ballarat thanks residents for their support in ensuring a safe and pleasant community.

Collecting
the leaves
Do’s & Don’ts for disposing leaves
There are many
thousands of deciduous
trees in Ballarat.
In late Autumn and
Winter, literally millions
of leaves fall on our
city’s streets.
City of Ballarat staff
collect leaf litter on a
street-by-street basis as
well as responding
to individual requests.
Leaves can also be taken to the City of Ballarat’s
Transfer Station in Gillies Street.
•
DO
Sweep leaves from gutters and footpaths into small piles and place
them on the nature strip or kerbside. For collection, call City of Ballarat
Customer Service Centre at 5320 5500 or lodge a Customer Request
online at www.ballarat.vic.gov.au
• Compost and mulch the leaves from your property. If you don’t have
composting facilities, store leaves in large plastic bags with handfuls
of blood and bone meal, and dampen with water for future use.
• Create mulch from Plane Tree leaves: go over them with a mower with
a catcher attached as these leaves do not compost well.
DON'T
• Put leaves in the garbage bin. Compost is best.
• Burn leaves - you risk a fine of $500.

Passing of the Miner’s Cottage
5 to 15 May
An enchanting exhibition of lavish Australian gold jewellery, 19th Century BLING
explores little known parts of history and the impact of the unique designs on the
socio political landscape of Australia and beyond.
The jewellery created for miners (diggers) and their families when they struck gold
was ostentatious, and often incorporated non-traditional emblems like the mining
tools they used including picks, shovels, spades, pistols, sluices and pans. It was
the “bling” of its day and represented diggers’ claims for legitimacy and power.
More than 150 rare, fascinating and exquisite pieces are on exhibition, tracing the
development of wearable decorative art and significant objects from the Australian
goldfields 1851 to 1901, plus some key international examples.
19th Century BLING is a located at M.A.D.E. The exciting calendar of exhibition
events includes workshops, lectures and tours, held in collaboration with
Sovereign Hill and the Gold Museum.
Entry: Adult $12; Children 6 to 15 $8; 0 to 5 free; Family pass $35.

Next Gen 2016
On show till Sunday 28 March, 2016
For more than 20 years, the Art Gallery of Ballarat’s Next Gen exhibition has exhibited the amazing talent of students studying
art and design subjects from across the region. This year, the exhibition includes works from local students and schools from
as far afield as Apollo Bay, Melton, Woodend, Donald, Ararat and Camperdown.
Next Gen 2016 features a range of media and a variety of themes — ideas and reflections for us all to contemplate. There
are many portraits, giving faces to those in conflict areas of the world, or looking at the perception of beauty in our society.
There are also works depicting nature, from fine botanical drawings, screen-printed flora and fauna to a range of fossil-like
raku bugs. One work considers the metaphysical masks we wear, while another looks at the way artists explore concepts of
mental health through ceramics and photography.
William Kentridge: Drawn from Africa
Ejdne Eben, 'Between the Lines'
On show till Sunday 10 April, 2016
The Art Gallery of Ballarat is hosting an exciting exhibition by South African artist William Kentridge, on tour from the
National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.
Kentridge was born in South Africa in 1955 to parents actively involved in supporting anti-apartheid activists and the
injustices of apartheid. He felt very strongly that art was not an abstract activity, rather always had political meaning, and
looked to some of the great artists of the past whose work had explored social issues and exposed injustice and inequality.
As an artist, Kentridge also explored a range of media, using film, drawing, printmaking and tapestry design, even working
on innovative opera productions and sculptural forms, crossing the boundaries of art categories.
An introductory video featuring a documentary about
Kentridge by outstanding US art documentary
organisation ART21, accompanies the exhibition.
