ABSTRACT:ThefascinationwithzombiesinpopcultureisaNewWorldphenomenonthat
originatedfromtheslavetradeofpre-independentHaitiandhasnowbecomeanimportant
narrativeoftheAmericanpsyche.Nomatterthedifferencesinzombicstories,thereare
twomajorthemesthatappeartobeconsistentwithinthenewarchetype:firstly,the
metaphorofbiologicalalteration,andsecondly,thesymbolismofperpetualconflict
betweenzombiesandsurvivorsinadystopiansetting.Thenarrativeofzombiesinour
culturehasapsychologicalimportancetoboththeindividualandsocietyasawhole.
Unfortunately,thecurrentpopcultureclimateconcerningzombiesobscuresthestory’s
catharticimportance.Thepotentiallyhealingunconsciousenergiesthathavefueledzombic
fascinationforoverahundredyearsarehavebeenkepthiddenfromconsciousnessby
relegatingzombicimagerytomereentertainment,or,mostimportantly,toliteral
potentialitiesofanapocalypticfuture.Thisresearchprojectattemptstointerpretthe

zombicculturalstoriesintoaclearanalysis(amplification)ofthepsychosomaticand
psychosocialdangersofourpresentsocietythatarecurrentlyrepressed.

ABSTRACT:Thefilm"MontyPythonandtheHolyGrail"(dir.TerryGilliamandTerryJones,
1975)containsnumerousanimatedsequencesinwhichdrolleries,rippedstraightoutof
medievalmanuscripts,aremanipulatedtocreatehumorous,andsometimesbawdy,
vignettes.InthispaperIexploretheoriginsandpossiblemeaningsofthesemedieval
images,andhowthesemeaningsrelatetothoseofthefilm'svignettes.InordertodothisI
firstexaminethemanyexplanationsthatscholarshaveprovidedastotheoriginsof
medievaldrollery.Ihopetoarriveatanin-depthunderstandingofthepossibleintentions
behindtheseimages,inordertoexaminewhetherthefilmmakersrespondtotheseoriginal
intentions.Iwillalsocomparehowtheoriginaldrolleriesrelatetotheiroriginalcontexts.
Additionally,theliveactionsegmentsofthefilmarenotcompletelyisolatedfromthe
themesthatcanbefoundindrolleries.Therearenumerousdepictionsfoundthroughout
manydifferentmedievalmanuscriptsthatdepictrabbitsabeingobsessivelyviolent,
fightingknightsandwieldingweapons.Thisthemefeaturesprominentlyintheliveaction
segmentofthefilmatthecastleofCaerbannogwhereKingArthurandhisknightsfaceof
withaseeminglyharmlesswhiterabbit.Thisisjustoneofmanyinstancesinwhichthefilm
createsthesetypesofbridges.BycriticallyanalyzingthefilminthiswayIhopetoexpose
themanywaysthatmedievalthemescanbeexpressedandsubvertedwithinmodern
media,andthemanywaysinwhichmedievalmediacanbeconsumedinapostmodern

ABSTRACT:Baleenwhalesplayakeyecologicalrolewithinmarinesystems.Whilemany
lifehistorydetailsarewelldocumented,therearefewrecordsonnursing,especiallyin
humpbackwhales.Duringthefirstsixmonthsofahumpbackwhalecalf’slife,theygrowata
rapidrate,increasinginlengthbyupto1.7cmperdayandgainingweightatarateof28kg
perday.Ascalvesdonotfeedindependently,energytosustainthisconstantgrowthcomes
fromthemother’smilk,meaningcalveswilldrink55gallonsofmilkperday.Currently
thereisverylittleknowledgedescribingdetailednursingbehaviorsforthisspecies,as
nursingisveryeasilydisturbed.Inthisstudy,weanalyzedaerialimagerytoseeifwecould
observeanddescribenursing.Approximately25%ofmother-calfpairsobservedwereseen
nursing.Nursing,occursinshortboutsand,themothercontinuesinslowtravelduringthe
durationofnursing.Thesedatacomprisethefirstquantitativedescriptionsofnursingfor
thisspeciesandcanbeappliedtoensurethatthisvitalbehaviorisnotdisturbed.

ABSTRACT:Recentlyunmannedaerialvehicles(UAVs)havebecomeanessentialtoolfor
capturingaerialimageryandareparticularlyusefulforscientificcommunityin
conservation,ecological,environmental,andgeographicresearch.Thisprojectfocusedon
determiningtheUAVbestsuitedforthepurposesofaerialphotogrammetryofHumpback
whalesintheirnaturalenvironment.TherequirementsoftheresearchrequiredtheUAVto
have;accurateandreliableimagerycapabilities,anadequateflighttime,waterresistance,

andgeneraleaseofuse.InitiallywaterproofingoftheUAVwasconsideredaprimary
concern,aSplashDroneandAquacopterweretestedasasolutiontothisissue.
Unfortunately,thewaterproofingofthesetwoUAVsreducedtheirflighttimesignificantly,
andtheiraltimeteraccuracyrequiredforprecisephotometricsizingwasquestionableat
best.InlieuofthesewaterproofUAVs,aDJIPhantom3Prowastestedfortheapplicationof
photogrammetryinamarineenvironment.ThePhantom3lackswaterresistance,but
excelsinallotherregardswhencomparedtothewaterproofalternatives.Thus,itwas
chosenastheplatformtobeusedintheresearchofbehavioronthebreedingandfeeding
groundsofHumpbackwhales.

year-round.Weareinvestigatingwhetherthereisecologicalsegregrationbetweenthetwo
speciesonandaroundtheCSUCIcampus.Preferencesfordifferentmicro-habitatsmay
reducecompetitionbetweenthetwospecies.Toaddressthis,wearespotmappingmale
hummingbirdsthroughoutcampusandinthenaturalareassurroundingcampus,suchas

gibbonsdonotneedpredatortrainingpriortorelease,however,thereisnoquantifiable
evidencetosupportthis.Toquantifyit,thisstudyexaminedthepredator-avoidance
behaviorsofcaptivegibbonswhenexposedtopotentiallydangerousstimuliandlookedat
theimplicationsoftheseresponsestoasuccessfulreintroductiontothewild.Theresearch
wasconductedattheGibbonConservationCenter(GCC)inSantaClarita,Californiawith
twelvecaptivegibbonsfromfourspecies:threeJavangibbons(Hylobatesmoloch),three
pileatedgibbons(Hylobatespileatus),threeeasternhoolockgibbons(Hoolockleuconedys),
andthreenorthernwhite-cheekedgibbons(Nomascusleucogenys).Theresponsestothe
followingstimuliwererecorded:onenaturalisticpredatorandtwocontrols.Alivesnake
wasusedasthepotentiallydangerous,naturalisticpredator,ajumboratwasusedasthe
harmlesslivestimulus,andbrightlycoloredblockswereusedasthenovelinanimateobject.
Duringallphasesoftesting,behavioralresponseswererecordedusingalive-scoringof
data,avideocamera,andafieldrecorder.Thebehavioralvariablesusedtomeasureeffects
ofstimuliareinaccordancewithastudydoneontheanti-predatorresponseofwild

bandsofNativeAmericans.SpanishexplorerssubsequentlycolonizedtheIslands.Thefirst
Europeanstoarrivedescribedlushislandsteemingwithwildlife.Inthe1800sand1900s,
theIslandsweredominatedbycattleandsheepranchers.Non-nativespeciesdecimatedthe
islands.Bythe1980s,theNationalParkServicebegantoreclaimtheIslands.Wepresent
three-dimensionalphotosofartifactsfromtheChannelIslandstodiscussthenatural
historyoftheislandsandalsotheimpactsonthemfromthenativeandnon-indigenous
populations.Thesephotographicdataoftheartifactswillbeavailableforpublicusein
futureendeavorsofeducatingabouttheCaliforniaChannelIslands.Thisinteractive,digital

thepatientshavetodealwithwaitingforlongperiodsoftimetobeseenwithmanyother
patients.Reasonsfortheovercrowdingisusuallybecausepatientsdonotknowreasonsto
comeornottocometotheER.Anotherbigissueisthatpatientscometotheemergency
roombecausetheydon’thaveaprimarycareproviderandcomingtotheemergencyroom
istheonlywaytogethelp.Thiscausesemergencyroomstobecomecrowdedand
healthcareworkers,suchasnurses,tobeoverworkedandstressed.Forthesehealthcare
workersthatmeansthatthequalityofcarecouldbecompromisedasaresult.Thisisan
extensiveliteraturereviewnursesandpatientsexperiences,specifically,intheER.Nurses
werecomparedtonursesonotherunitssuchasOncology,IntensiveCare,andnephrology
units.AmongthesegroupstheERnursesfeltlesscompassionsatisfaction.Theresultswere

systemitisconvertedintoitsorganicform,methylmercury.Thisformisonethat
biomagnifiesandbecomestoxicasittravelsupthefoodchain.Ourstudyinvestigated
establishingMacrocystispyrifera(giantbrownkelp)asabiosentinelofenvironmental
mercuryduetobeingafast-growingproducerthatisbothwidespreadandabundant.This
specieshasthepotentialtoserveasanindicatorofcurrentlevelsofmercuryintheocean
surface,throughthecontributionsofnon-pointandpointsourcepollution.Thestudyarea
