Year 7 Geography Katoomba Field-trip
Onthe9thofOctober,classes7.2,7.4and7.6visited
ScenicWorldandtheWaradahAboriginalCentrein
Katoomba.Itwasafantasticexperienceforeveryone.
Welearntabouttheenvironmentsurroundingus,the
floraandfaunathere,andtheimpactsofhumansonit.
AtScenicWorld,wewereabletoexperienceallofthe
rides,whichweretheScenicCableway,theScenic
SkywayandtheScenicRailway.TheScenicRailwayis
thesteepestrailwayintheworld,witha310metre
thrillingdrop!!!Onthistrip,wehadthechancetosee
somebeautifulandbreathtakingsites,includingOrphan
Rock,MountSolitary,TheThreeSisters,Katoomba
WaterfallandRuinedCastle.Someofuswereevenlucky
enoughtoseealyrebird!!!Weevensawatreethatwas
hitbylightningmanyyearsago,whichhadahugecrack
allthewaydownit!!!Amazing!!!Wehikedthroughthe
peacefulandshadedboardwalk,fillinginaworksheetas
wefoundtheanswersoninformativeplaques.Ournext
stopwastheWaradahAboriginalCentre,notfarfrom
ScenicWorld.Wewatchedaninterestingperformance
aboutthelifestyleandculturesoftheAborigineswho
firstinhabitedthisland.Weevengottokeepawrist
bandwiththeaboriginalflagcoloursonit,whichserves
asasouvenirofourfantasticexperiencesinKatoomba!!!
Theperformanceincludedmanyculturalandspiritual
dancesandsongs,theplayingofthedidgeridooand
dancemovementsthatmimickedanimals.The3adults
thatwereapartintheperformancetoldusabouttheir
culture,languageandhowtheylived.Itwasvery
interesting!Attheendsomeofusevengotapicturewith
oneoftheperformers!!Welearntalotonthisfieldtrip,asitwasaveryenjoyableandeyeopening
experienceforeveryone.WehavelearnttoappreciatetheGreaterBlueMountainsevenmore,asit
isaWorldHeritageSite.
ThankyoutoMrSteadmanfororganisingthetrip,andthankyoutotheteacherswhoaccompanied
andsupervisedus‐MrGriffiths,MrHoward,MrsMorrisandalsoMrSteadman.Also,anextrathank

givenaguidedtourofthe
schoolbeforerecessand
latercompleted
variousactivities
includingusingtheschool
diaries,usingthecanteenandcompletingapiccollageaboutwhattheyhadseeninthemorning.
ThestudentsfinishedtheirdaywiththeirparentsattendingthepresentationofcertificatesbyMr
Ryan,beforeenjoyingafternoontea.

specialtheeventwaswhichcausedmetounderstandthecloserelationshipbetweenJapan
andAustralia. IamverythankfultomyteacherMrsSatoasshepresentedthecompetitionto
myJapaneseclassandaccompaniedmeonthelongjourneytotheConsulate‐General'sofficial
residenceinSydney.IalsothankMrRyanfortakingtimeoutofhisdaytowitnessthe
ceremonyandtosupportme. Iamverygratefulfortheopportunitytorepresentourcollege.

Jenna and Anthony's Japanese exchange experience
OurexchangeprogramsbetweenHokusetsuSandaSeniorHighSchoolinJapanandStColumba’s
havebeendevelopedsuccessfullyoverthepast21years.
Twoofouryear10students,JennaWoolleyandAnthonyPujichavebeenstudyingandenjoying
homestayexperiencesona6monthexchangeinJapan.Alltheteachers,hostfamiliesandstudents
atHokusetsuareextremelyhappytohavethemintheirschoolcommunity.Theyareimpressedby
JennaandAnthony’senthusiasmtobeinvolvedineveryopportunitytheyhavebeenofferedand
theirefforttoimprovetheirJapaneseskills.Theirexcellentmannersandcourteousnaturehave
beenmuchappreciatedbyeveryone.
Goingtoanothercountyandstudyinginadifferentenvironmentwherepeoplespeakadifferent
languagemustbeachallenge.Iwouldliketocongratulatethemontheircommitmenttoimprove
theirJapaneseskills,theirenthusiasmtolearnnewthings,andtheirindependenceandmaturityon
beingabletoliveinanothercountry.Theyarewonderfulambassadorstofurtherdevelopthe
relationship,notonlybetweenStColumba’sandHokusetsubutalsobetweenJapanandAustralia.

InJapanwehavehadtheopportunitytoexperienceanewwayoflife.
Wecanwitnessfirsthandthecultureofthisamazingcountry.FromtheJapaneseeducationsystemto
homelifewithourhostfamilies.Wehavevisitedhistoricorotherwiseinterestingplaceswithamazing
thingstosee,doandlearn.Wehavebothsettledintoournewsurroundingsandwayoflifequitewell.
ThemaindifferencesbetweentheJapaneseandAustralianlifestylesisfood,education,familylifeand
culture.Oftenthefoodisdeliciousandinterestingandforthemoretraditionalfoods,itcanbean
excitingnewexperience.TheclassesatHokusetsuSandaSeniorHighschoolare65minuteslongandin
theformofalecture,however10minutebreaksbetweenperiodswitha45minutelunch.Thisallows
thestudentstobecompletelyfocusedonthetaskathandandgivestimetoadapttoeachlesson.Itisa
smartsystem.
TheJapanesehousesaretypicallymuchsmallerthanAustralianhouses,howevercontainmany
unusualyetconvenientfeaturesthatAustralianhousesdon'tsuchasthetoiletandbathroomstyles.
Ourhostfamiliesareextremelygenerousandalwaysgivingandhelpful.Peoplearealwayseagerto
helpandgiveususefuladviceforbecomingcomfortableinourcurrentsetting.
WewouldliketothankStColumba’sandHokusetsuforthisamazingopportunityandalltheteachers
thatmadethishappen.Overall,everythingisgoingreallywell!WewillmissJapanandthememories
wehavebeencreating
whenweleave.Thisisa
valuableexperiencein
whichwecanmake
friendsandmemories
thatwewillnever
forget.Werecommend

On3rdofNovember,theYear9JapaneseclasshadtheprivilegeofvisitingtheNihongoTankenCentrein
Sydney,atKirraweeHighSchool.ThecentreprovidedthestudentswithanauthenticJapanesehouse
andgarden,whereweparticipatedinmanytraditionalactivities,fullyimmersedinacompletely
differentculture.
Onceweenteredthecentre,itwasclearthatwecouldn’tspeakanyEnglish.Variousactionsandtasks
weredemonstratedtoussuchastalkingourshoesoffandputtingonslippers,anexpectationthat
appliestoeveryJapanesehouse.Weweredividedintofourgroupstatbecameverycompetitiveassoon
aswerealizeditwasacompetition.Ourtwoteachersthere,MiekosenseiandTakasensei,werevery
helpfulandpatient,assistingusthroughthedifficulttasksthatwereposedtouse.
Myfavouriteactivitywasthequiz,whereonestudentfromeachteamwasaskedaquestion.Forexample,
youmightbeaskedinJapanesehowoldyouareandhavetoanswerinJapanese.Ilovedthequizbecause
allthequestionsweredifferent,expandingmyknowledgeandprovidinganelementofsurprise.
ThedaywasveryenjoyableandIamcertainthatallstudentsenjoyedthewonderfulauthenticand
genuineJapaneseexperience,evenifitwasonlyforaday.

On3rdofNovemberat8amtheYear9JapaneseclassembarkedonanexcursiontotheNihongoTanken
Centre,anauthenticJapaneseenvironmentatKirraweeHighSchool.Wearrivedatthecentreaboutan
hourandahalflater.ThankyoutoGawthornesensei(MrGawthorne)andAnnabella’smumforbeing
kindenoughtodriveusthere.
AssoonaswearrivedwewereimmersedinthebeautifulJapaneseculturesurroundingtheNihongo
TankenCentre.ThecentreitselfisdesignedlikeanauthenticJapanese‐stylehouse,bothinsideandout.
WeweregreetedbyourJapaneseteachersTakasenseiandMiekosensei.Oneofthefirstthingswe
noticedwastheneitherofthemwasgoingtospeakanyEnglishfortheday,onlyJapanese!Wewereall
bothexcitedandnervous,beingexpectedtoactjustlikeJapanesepeoplewouldintheirownhomes.We
weretoldtotakeoffourshoes,putonspecialindoorslippersintheentrywaytothehousecalled
genkan,andthensitoncushionsonthetatamimatfloor.ThevisitfeltauthenticallyJapanesebecauseof
customssuchasthese.
Wealltookpartinavarietyofactivitiesincludinginterviews,charades,dress‐ups,role‐playandlotsof
competitivegames.Alltheactivitiesduringthedaywerefun,whilechallengingourlanguageskillsatthe
sametime.TakasenseiandMiekosenseipreparedusallaJapanesemorningtea,aswellasadelicious
packedlunchfilledwithavarietyoffoodcalledObentoo.
Attheendofourvisit,noneofuswantedtoleave–theNihongoTankenCentreisabeautifulplaceto
learnthatyoujustcan’tgetenoughof.IknowforsurethateveryoneinSatosensei’sYear9Japanese
classlovedtheexcursion.TheNihongoTankenCentreishardtobeat,andwethankeveryoneinvolved
forthismemorableexperience.

Festival(BMYFF).Thefilmhadtwo
actors/cameraoperators,Chloeandher
sisterSiobhan.Thefilmwasrecognised
andshortlistedforthefinals.

thingthatisunknowntotheaudience.She
findscomfortwhenlookingupatthe
moonandunbeknowntoher,thereisan
alienlookingback.Thealienfindsherself
inthesamesituationasthehumanandis
terriblysad.Theynevermeetbutforma
connection,despitethedistanceoftheir
homes,andgiveeachotherthepowerto
carryon.
ThefilmwasshownattheUnitedCinemas
Katoomba(formerlyTheEdge)towards
theendofOctoberalongwiththe8other
finalists,withanawardceremony
followingimmediatelyafterwards.
Chloewantstobeafilmdirectorand
screenplaywriter.Chloeisinspiredbythe
worksofTimBurtonandBazLuhrmann
andhopestoone‐dayshareintheir
successes.Throughherparticipationin
theBMYFF,Chloehasbeeninspiredto
continuewithherfilmmakingandwould
enjoytheopportunityofbetteringher
resultattheBMYFFinthefuture.

Westmead Children’s Hospital Visit
Bright,funandpositivearenotexactly

hospitalvisit,butthiswascertainlythe
caseforthe21studentsIwaslucky
enoughtotakedowntoWestmead
Children’sHospital,Thursday9th
December.
Inkeepingwithalong‐standing,andmuch
lovedtradition,Year9studentshavespent
thetermcreatingpicturebooksforthe
youngpeoplevisitingtheprimaryroomat
thehospital.
Thisvisitallowedstudentstogainarare
insightintothecomingsandgoingsofthehospital.Studentsweretreatedtoanimpromptumusical
andmagicperformance,somekaraoke,atourofthehospitalandfacilities,andofcourse,timetosit
down,andsharetheirpicturebooks.
Thehospitalwascertainlyinafestivemoodasthevisitcoincidedwithadecoratingcompetition
thatsaweachwardcrameverysparespacewiththemeddecorations.Whilestudentshadnever
seensomanyMinionsintheirlife,theywerealsostruckwiththeoverwhelmingpositivityofboth
thestaff,andpatients.
EmilyBannisterexplained,“Ifoundthewholeexperienceveryinspiring,especiallythebrave
childrenIhadthehonourofmeeting.”ForSianDoko,theexperiencewas“veryhumblingandeye
opening.Thechildrenwereenthusiasticsweetandheartwarmingtotalkto.”Thevisitalsogave
studentsreasontoreflectontheirowncircumstancesandbemoregratefulandappreciative.Felix
Swanestated,“Toseehowhappythekidsweredespitetheirconditionreallyopenedmyeyesabout
howweneedtoseethegoodinthesmallthingsinlife.”
AllofYear9istobecommendedontheamazingeffort,dedicationandhearttheypouredintotheir
picturebooks.Eachonewasbeautifulandunique,andmuchappreciatedbythepatients.Although
noteveryonewasabletoseetheyoungpatientsenjoytheirnew
books,Icanensureyouthattheywillcontinuetobrightentheir
daysforalongtimetocome.

Sports News
Wehavehadaverysuccessful2015insportthisyear.Wewouldliketocongratulateallthe
studentswhorepresentedourCollegeatvariousGaladays,PDSSSCeventsandCarnivals.Thisyear
wehavehad877studentsreceiveaSportsWhiteAward,90studentsreceiveaSportsYellow
Awardand12studentsreceiveaSportsBlueAward.
Wetookanewapproachtoourinternalsportsdaysthisyear.Wehavemovedthemfromhaving
sportonaWednesdaytoaThursday.Thismeanswenolongercompeteagainsttheotherschoolsin
ourarea.Ithasallowedustomaximizethetimeourstudentsareactivelyinvolvedinsports,
allowedthemtocompeteinhousegroupsmore,buildstrongerrelationshipswiththeirpeersand
increasedtheirskilllevelsbybringinginskilledcoachesinavarietyofsportsthroughouttheyear.
Ourstudentsfromyears7to9haveplayedavarietyofsportsthisyearandhaveenjoyedthe
experienceandamountofplayingtime.Wehavehadpositivefeedbackfrombothstaffandstudents
aboutthisnewapproachtoThursdaysport.Thankyoutoparentsandcarersforyourcontinued
supportintryingtomaximizestudentparticipationinsportsattheCollege.
Throughthenewformatandstructure,theyeargroupsbelowhavebeeninvolvedandlearnta
varietyofskillsinthesesports.
