Welearntabouttheenvironmentsurroundingus,the floraandfaunathere,andtheimpactsofhumansonit. AtScenicWorld,wewereabletoexperienceallofthe rides,whichweretheScenicCableway,theScenic SkywayandtheScenicRailway.TheScenicRailwayis thesteepestrailwayintheworld,witha310metre thrillingdrop!!!Onthistrip,wehadthechancetosee somebeautifulandbreathtakingsites,includingOrphan Rock,MountSolitary,TheThreeSisters,Katoomba WaterfallandRuinedCastle.Someofuswereevenlucky enoughtoseealyrebird!!!Weevensawatreethatwas hitbylightningmanyyearsago,whichhadahugecrack allthewaydownit!!!Amazing!!!Wehikedthroughthe peacefulandshadedboardwalk,fillinginaworksheetas wefoundtheanswersoninformativeplaques.Ournext stopwastheWaradahAboriginalCentre,notfarfrom ScenicWorld.Wewatchedaninterestingperformance aboutthelifestyleandculturesoftheAborigineswho firstinhabitedthisland.Weevengottokeepawrist bandwiththeaboriginalflagcoloursonit,whichserves asasouvenirofourfantasticexperiencesinKatoomba!!! Twoofouryear10students,JennaWoolleyandAnthonyPujichavebeenstudyingandenjoying homestayexperiencesona6monthexchangeinJapan.Alltheteachers,hostfamiliesandstudents atHokusetsuareextremelyhappytohavethemintheirschoolcommunity.Theyareimpressedby JennaandAnthony’senthusiasmtobeinvolvedineveryopportunitytheyhavebeenofferedand theirefforttoimprovetheirJapaneseskills.Theirexcellentmannersandcourteousnaturehave beenmuchappreciatedbyeveryone. Wecanwitnessfirsthandthecultureofthisamazingcountry.FromtheJapaneseeducationsystemto homelifewithourhostfamilies.Wehavevisitedhistoricorotherwiseinterestingplaceswithamazing thingstosee,doandlearn.Wehavebothsettledintoournewsurroundingsandwayoflifequitewell. ThemaindifferencesbetweentheJapaneseandAustralianlifestylesisfood,education,familylifeand culture.Oftenthefoodisdeliciousandinterestingandforthemoretraditionalfoods,itcanbean excitingnewexperience.TheclassesatHokusetsuSandaSeniorHighschoolare65minuteslongandin theformofalecture,however10minutebreaksbetweenperiodswitha45minutelunch.Thisallows thestudentstobecompletelyfocusedonthetaskathandandgivestimetoadapttoeachlesson.Itisa smartsystem. TheJapanesehousesaretypicallymuchsmallerthanAustralianhouses,howevercontainmany unusualyetconvenientfeaturesthatAustralianhousesdon'tsuchasthetoiletandbathroomstyles. Ourhostfamiliesareextremelygenerousandalwaysgivingandhelpful.Peoplearealwayseagerto helpandgiveususefuladviceforbecomingcomfortableinourcurrentsetting. Onceweenteredthecentre,itwasclearthatwecouldn’tspeakanyEnglish.Variousactionsandtasks weredemonstratedtoussuchastalkingourshoesoffandputtingonslippers,anexpectationthat appliestoeveryJapanesehouse.Weweredividedintofourgroupstatbecameverycompetitiveassoon aswerealizeditwasacompetition.Ourtwoteachersthere,MiekosenseiandTakasensei,werevery helpfulandpatient,assistingusthroughthedifficulttasksthatwereposedtouse. Myfavouriteactivitywasthequiz,whereonestudentfromeachteamwasaskedaquestion.Forexample, youmightbeaskedinJapanesehowoldyouareandhavetoanswerinJapanese.Ilovedthequizbecause allthequestionsweredifferent,expandingmyknowledgeandprovidinganelementofsurprise. ThedaywasveryenjoyableandIamcertainthatallstudentsenjoyedthewonderfulauthenticand genuineJapaneseexperience,evenifitwasonlyforaday. WeweregreetedbyourJapaneseteachersTakasenseiandMiekosensei.Oneofthefirstthingswe noticedwastheneitherofthemwasgoingtospeakanyEnglishfortheday,onlyJapanese!Wewereall bothexcitedandnervous,beingexpectedtoactjustlikeJapanesepeoplewouldintheirownhomes.We weretoldtotakeoffourshoes,putonspecialindoorslippersintheentrywaytothehousecalled genkan,andthensitoncushionsonthetatamimatfloor.ThevisitfeltauthenticallyJapanesebecauseof customssuchasthese. Wealltookpartinavarietyofactivitiesincludinginterviews,charades,dress‐ups,role‐playandlotsof competitivegames.Alltheactivitiesduringthedaywerefun,whilechallengingourlanguageskillsatthe sametime.TakasenseiandMiekosenseipreparedusallaJapanesemorningtea,aswellasadelicious packedlunchfilledwithavarietyoffoodcalledObentoo. AbriefsynopsisoftheAlien’sAlienis aboutahumanwhowastroubledbya thingthatisunknowntotheaudience.She findscomfortwhenlookingupatthe moonandunbeknowntoher,thereisan alienlookingback.Thealienfindsherself inthesamesituationasthehumanandis terriblysad.Theynevermeetbutforma connection,despitethedistanceoftheir homes,andgiveeachotherthepowerto carryon. Inkeepingwithalong‐standing,andmuch lovedtradition,Year9studentshavespent thetermcreatingpicturebooksforthe youngpeoplevisitingtheprimaryroomat thehospital. Thisvisitallowedstudentstogainarare insightintothecomingsandgoingsofthehospital.Studentsweretreatedtoanimpromptumusical andmagicperformance,somekaraoke,atourofthehospitalandfacilities,andofcourse,timetosit down,andsharetheirpicturebooks. Thehospitalwascertainlyinafestivemoodasthevisitcoincidedwithadecoratingcompetition thatsaweachwardcrameverysparespacewiththemeddecorations.Whilestudentshadnever seensomanyMinionsintheirlife,theywerealsostruckwiththeoverwhelmingpositivityofboth thestaff,andpatients.
