POOL RESTORATION

POOL RESTORATION
JUNE 2014
This summer we will be refinishing the surface of all three pools. Maintenance of pool
surfaces is normal for most pools after about 7 years. In addition, you may have also
noticed there are rust spots that need to be addressed in all three pools. We know this
closure is impactful to your aqua workout plans therefore we are taking many steps to offer
alternatives. Although it isn’t perfect we hope you understand the importance of
maintaining this beautiful facility and will consider trying a different workout. Below you
will find some Frequently Asked Questions which hopefully provide some guidance. If you
have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Why are the pools closing?
The pools are closing to resurface and remove rust spots from each tank.
How long are the pools closed?
The pools will be closed 6-8 weeks. The pool closures and opening will be staggered as the
work progresses. We plan to stagger the beginning and ending of the work. The therapy
and whirlpool will close first, followed by the lap pool about one week later. The therapy
and whirlpool will open first with the lap pool opening a week later. The tentative schedule
is as follows.
Whirlpool: May 31 – July 4
Therapy pool: June 1 – July 4
Lap pool: June 7 – July 16
When will the pools open?
The whirlpool and therapy pool are tentatively scheduled to open July 4 and the lap pool
July 16. We will post confirmed opening days as the construction progresses. Opening
dates will be posted in the facility, on the website and via twitter.
What are they doing to the pools?
Draining, removing rust, mapping rebar, patching, tiling, cleaning and resurfacing.
The mitigation of the rust spots requires a process that involves 14 days of surface curing
before the pools can be refilled which contributes to the length of closure. One of the
challenges in this process is draining the water. All waste water at CHH is processed by a
bioreactor. The bioreactor has limitations on the volume it can process which impacts the
amount of water we can dump per minute.
Where can I swim?
During the pool closure all march wellness members have access to the pool and whirlpool
at the Student Center at OHSU on the main campus (Marquam Hill).

Can I get a reduction in dues?
We will not be reducing dues during the closure. The maintenance of facilities requires
periodic closures of different portions of the center. Most pools are closed annually for
several weeks; we have been able to defer these closures until now. In addition we have
arranged pool and whirlpool access for march wellness members at the student center on
the hill. The tram is easy access to the student center (your march wellness membership
card provides free tram rides).
