Wangara Volkswagen Geraldton Ocean Classic Race Program, March 2014
WANGARA VOLKSWAGEN GERALDTON OCEAN CLASSIC 2014
South of Perth Yacht Club Commodore’s Welcome
The South of Perth Yacht Club would like to welcome all the contestants in the
2014 Freemantle to Geraldton blue water ocean classic.
This event has been run in conjuction with the Geraldton Yacht Club for the last
44 seasons and this is now the 45th event. We deffinatley thank all of those
people who have participated in, voluntered for and have sponsored the event
in the past.
Different things have been tried in the past to boost numbers when they have
dropped off due to clashing with other events or weather conditions being
to severe, such as moving the event to March/April rather than its traditional
October spot, It’s great to see 13 entrants in the race this year
Without the help of the sponsors it would be very difficult to run this event. This
year we welcome onboard Wangara Volkswagon as the major naming sponsor
and welcome back Hanson Construction Materials who assist with the yellow trackers so we can all keep an eye
on the progress of the participants.
This race takes an awful lot of work to organise and run, to all those involved from the South of Perth yacht Club
the Geraldton Yacht Club and others we thank you very much.
A special thanks must go to Barrett Communications and Dave Ewart who have relocated our radios to the
centreboard clubhouse, put in a back up system so the whole event can be contolled from the club without the
need to have a tender one at Rottnest.
Have a safe and successful race up a safe trip home and I will see you all at presentations.
Paul Ward
Commodore
Geraldton Yacht Club Commodore’s Welcome
In welcoming you to Geraldton for this year’s Fremantle to Geraldton Ocean
Racing Classic I am mindful of the many yachtsmen who have competed
and the friendships we have formed, unfortunately very few are still actively
racing and quite a few are deceased.
However it always brings back happy memories of some of the shenanigans
that went on.
These days with the pressures of the racing calendar very few remain for the
week between the races. Be that as it may we here at Geraldton welcome
you and will do our best to entertain you.
May you experience fair winds and following seas.

In the late Frank Saraceni’s last season with Alfresco,
he and his crew came 3rd in the Beneteau Offshore
Series and 2nd in the Farrawa Cup series. Tragically
Frank passed away after last season in June.
His family decided to sell Alfresco and the boat was
bought jointly by John Rayner and Dominic Papaluca.
Dominic is one of nature’s finest gentlemen and former
owner of Wild Bull, which won last year’s Valmadre
series in Division 2. Alfresco could not be in better
hands with John and Dominic which would no doubt
have pleased Frank.

Blondie is the first SS34 that was constructed using
the vacuum infusion method. The hull is stronger and
lighter than conventional fibreglass yachts, but because
of the age of the design, it still benefits from a generous
age allowance.
This will be Simon and Blondie’s inaugural Geraldton
Ocean race, although crewman Mike Finn, previous
owner of Huckleberry has competed successfully in
numerous Geraldton races as has veteran Mike Foster
Dominic and his crew in their first ocean race which
was Hillary’s Pot of Gold, won both YAH and IRC in
Division 1. They came 2nd on the race home, the
Shepherdess Cup, again both on YAH & IRC.
This will be Dominic’s first Geraldton race, although
many of his crew have made the trip north before.

It is wonderful to see Farrago out in the ocean after at
least three years on dry dock awaiting a new keel.
Peter Vlaar and his crew won the coveted Siska Trophy
in the 2002 – 2003 season, so the yacht is definitely a
great ocean going one with great potential.
Mike missed out on last year’s Geraldton by less than
a week but he then campaigned her for the last half of
the season and managed to get 3rd on IRC in the YWA
State Championships in the 2012-2013 season.
After a family trip to the Kimberley’s, Peter once again
decided to tackle offshore and gained 2nd YAH & IRC
in the Pot of Gold this year and on the return won both
YAH & IRC.
This Sydney 47’ design yacht has been sailing well
this season and achieved line honours, and first on
both YAH & IRC in the recent Bunbury and Return
Ocean Race, minus owner Mike who was in Europe on
business. The crew told him that the boat sailed well
without him onboard!
Peter is taking the owners of both Sagacious and
Ocean Racing Captain Chris Higham who owns Numbers Game. No shortage of helmsmen, particularly
with legend Jason Furnell on board.
This will be Endorfin’s inaugural Geraldton and his
stalwart crew are out to prove the yachts potential

Ocean Racing stalwart, Rear Commodore of Sail at
Fremantle Sailing Club, Rob Thomas will be competing
in his fourth Geraldton race. Even though Finistere is
the oldest yacht in Division 1, she still won the Batavia
Cup Series in 2007, 2008, 2009. In 2008 Rob and his
crew won YAH overall for the race to and back from
Geraldton.
Owners Lyn Powell and Ian Whitehead finished last
season gaining a 2nd place in Division 3 for the overall consistency.
Robert Thomas, Kim Strickland, Amadeus Rainbow,
Paul Owens, Colin Balantine, Jonathon Donaldson,
Clayton Davys, Toby Byrne
Rob modified the yacht after he first bought it and is
definitely now a beautiful cruising boat. However if we
were to have a “typical” Geraldton return, the yacht
would still excel as she revels in tough conditions on
the nose.
Rob had success in one of his many yachts “Maggie’s
Farm” way back in 1982 when he and his crew won
the race from Geraldton to Fremantle both on YAH and
IOR.
10
Lyn Powell, Ian Whitehead, Steve Davies
Emma Higham, Marie Connolly, Abi Paterson,
Kyle Brealey
Fourth Dimension and their crew had a great race up
to Geraldton last year and gained 2nd YAH for their
efforts and a 3rd YAH on the return leg from Geraldton
to Fremantle, which also made them 2nd overall on
YAH for both races on YAH.
This will be Fourth Dimension’s 3rd Geraldton Classic
and will be vying for a position on handicap.
They are yet to win a race, this season but have been
up at the podium for the Dolphin, Gordon Craig, Pot
of Gold, Coventry Reef and Shepherdess Ocean
races, which is an indication of their determination to
achieve.

likeable larrikin, Laurie Flynn from Mandurah. When
Laurie owned her she was called Aardvark and he
had a few successes with her, but since Craig has
had this boat which he renamed Hoodoo Man, he has
campaigned it very successfully. They won Division
2, IRC in F.S.C. Valmadre Cup series and came 3rd in
last year’s YAH consistency series in Division 2. They
also achieved a 2nd place in the Farrawa Cup series.
This season Craig and his crew have achieved quite a
lot of successes including winning IRC in the Coventry Reef, the Dolphin and the Gordon Craig races in
Division 2.

Owner Terry Posma is determined to improve on last
year’s Geraldton Race results. On the return race
they gained a 3rd on YAH and 2nd on IRC. However
for the race up and back they managed only a fourth,
so this year they are all hyped up to improve their
positions.
Last year they came 3rd YAH in the Blue Water Series
and 1st on YAH in the same series.
This year’s performance is an indication that they are
up there with the rest of their rival’s winning YAH in
the Cape Naturaliste and Iberia Ocean races. She
also got 2nd IRC in the Naturaliste Ocean Race.
Craig has owned many yachts in the past, all of which
he has had numerous successes.
This will be his first Geraldton race in Hoodoo Man,
but he has the very experienced navigator Chris
Disley who is co-owner of last year’s Siska Trophy
winner, General Lee. He also has recruited some of
General Lee’s crew, together with his core crew will
make a formidable combination.

Kraken will once again be in the start line for this year’s
Geraldton race competing in the Double Handed Division. At least this year she will be competing against
R2D2 and not on her own as she was last race. Owner
Todd Giraudo and crewman Dubbo White won the
Evolution Sails Blue Water Series last season on YAH
and IRC, a great achievement.
So far this season they have won every ocean race in
the double handed division they have competed in, in
both YAH and IRC. The races include the George Law,
The Cape Naturaliste and return, the Coventry Reef,
Pot of Gold, Bunbury and return and most recently the
Iberia Race to Geographe Bay. This is an absolutely
astonishing feat.
They will be once again be a threat to the fully crewed
yachts on handicaps.

Owner Peter Hickson and his crew had a very successful season last year in his previous yacht Mulberry
when they won both YAH and IRC in Division 2 in
the Beneteau Offshore series, also winning the YAH
consistency series again in Division 2, together with
winning the Farrawa Cup series in their division.
Peter informed us all at the YWA Offshore Presentation dinner that he would be buying a new yacht for
this season which we would not miss. Not a truer word
spoken, ME II stands out like no other yacht on this
coast. What a colour scheme!!
Peter and his crew have had numerous successes in
his Ker 39, winning both YAH and IRC in the George
Law, came 1st IRC in the Naturaliste Race with a 2nd
on YAH. He also won the Iberia race to Geographe
Bay on IRC and came 3rd on YAH.
This will be Peter’s inaugural race to Geraldton and he
has some very experienced crew, including Sydney to
Hobart veteran, Mike Hughes.

heavy seas.

Sue Sea is probably one of the most travelled yachts in
this race. She has competed in two Bali Ocean races
and a Darwin to Ambon Ocean race.
Even though she was away most of last season following the Bali race she gained 3rd place on YAH in the
consistency series in Division 1.
So far this season she has come 3rd in IRC in the
Carnac race and gained a 2nd place on YAH. They
also achieved a 3rd place on YAH in the Bunbury and

in their first Geraldton Race.
So far they have had quite a successful season winning IRC in Division 2, in the Dolphin race and a 3rd on
YAH.
They won the Gordon Craig on both YAH and IRC in
Division 2.
Bryan and his crew competed in last year’s Sydney to
Hobart Ocean race and were 55th over the line, in a
field of 77, not bad for one of the smaller yachts and
finished mid fleet on IRC. Bryan and his crew got so
much more confidence from delivery to Sydney and
return and including the Hobart race, that they now feel
they can do the Geraldton Race.

All crews are advised that there is a VHF Repeater
Station established on Mt Lesurier. It is operated by
the Jurien Volunteer Sea Rescue Group on Channel

JVSRG say that results to date indicate that the
relay has at times made contact with vessels as far
away as Two Rocks to the south and Dongara in
the north.
Channel 21 is not a registered Geraldton race
frequency, but if satisfactory communications on
race channels are not available, might be a useful
alternative.

RACE TRACKERS
In 2014, the yachts competing in the
Geraldton Ocean Classic will be fitted with
Yellow Brick Trackers. Yellow Brick trackers
are a rugged and fully self-contained battery
operated tracker which works anywhere on
Earth.
The tracker will wake up every so often (e.g.
every 15 minutes), obtain a position using
the GPS satellite network, and then transmit
that position back to Yellowbrick HQ using
the Iridium satellite network in seconds.
The message is relayed to us from Iridium,
after which we will be able to visualize the
positions on an easy-to-use web-based
viewer.
On the race viewer, visitors to the site will be
able to view a display of waypoints, markers
and rhumb line, historic tracks as well as the
current location of the yachts, replay, display
of speed and course for each yacht, skipper
name and yacht name for each vessel
plus the weather information provided via
PredictWind.
The race viewer will be accessible for the
duration of the races north and return on the
Club’s website at www.sopyc.com.au. The
viewer uses Adobe Flash and will require
visitors to the site to have flash installed
before it will work. Visitors to the site who do
not have flash will be prompted to install it on
first visit.

Navigation – the changing landscape
Feature Article by Bernie Kaaks
Seemingly just a few short years ago, yachts raced up and down the WA coast with a compass and a ship’s log.
Remarkably perhaps, most managed to get to their destination as planned, though in the case of the Geraldton
Race, there have been a few exceptions.
A little boat during the 80’s had not turned up in Geraldton by Sunday morning, but just as the search parties were
being organised, a report came in to advise that it had arrived at Horrocks – like many Dutchmen a couple of centuries earlier, they turned a bit too late! There have been hits and near misses, too, at Beagle Rock, where both
Tony Stanton, and before him, Jon Sanders, came to grief.
During this era, navigators actually had to work to deduce the position of their yachts. The maintenance of log
books, running fixes, distance run, dead reckoning and hand bearing compasses were commonplace, and most of
the more experienced navigators could use a sextant, though few of them would have done so in a Geraldton race!
In today’s world of ocean racing, GPS may have dulled some of those skills, even if it has not killed them off altogether. How many navigators could confidently plot their yacht’s position and future course if the GPS failed in the
middle of a dark and stormy night? The standard answer to that question is usually a glib “Oh, we always carry a
spare GPS just in case.” That is a commendable course of action, but not very helpful if the whole system is shut
down for any reason – but then many aircraft would be in trouble, too, so that’s pretty unlikely. The upside lies in
the many things that are possible since GPS came into being.
Most GPS receivers can instantly plot their location within a few metres, so providing you have an accurate chart
on which to plot your location, you know precisely what dangers might lurk in your vicinity (apart from those that
are moving, like other yachts, ships and whales!).
Today, that technology has taken us even further. Many would remember the awful hours that followed after Jamie
Weeden fell from Walk on the Wild Side while the boat was travelling downwind at more than 20 knots. Although
the man overboard key was hit almost immediately and Jamie reported later that he never lost sight of the yacht, it
took an agonisingly long time to find him again, exacerbated by the fact that darkness was imminent.
With the advent of personal locator beacons, the location of a man overboard becomes routine, taking all the
guesswork out of trying to find the victim, regardless of conditions. There is of course, still an issue with some crew
still going on deck without their life saving personal locator beacons, but eventually it will become as commonplace
as putting on your seatbelt when you drive your car.
Moving objects, too, have become far easier to keep track of with the advent
of AIS – another GPS based system that signals each vessel’s speed,
direction and location. The technology is now compulsory on commercial ships at sea, thus enabling yachts equipped with AIS (and several
of them are already!) to know not only exactly what ships are in the
vicinity, but whether their course and speed are such that a collision
might be possible.
The chart plotters in use on most racing yachts can be interfaced
with a great many aids to the modern day navigator. Charts can
be updated automatically, they can be integrated with the latest
weather information and can also be interfaced with yacht racing
software.
To make best use of all this technology requires a skill set that is
remarkably different from that required twenty or thirty years ago. Different, yes, but less skilful?
Ocean racing yachts today are stronger, lighter and faster than they used to be, requiring constant updating of
position and strategy. Navigators on these yachts seem to be every bit as capable as experts from years gone by.
They enjoy far greater accuracy, thanks to technology, and ultimately, that translates not only to improved navigation, but also in the safety of racing sailors around the world.
