Seasons- Major lines of Latitude

Seasons- Major lines of Latitude
Below is a diagram of the Earth and the 5 major lines of Latitude. These lines are of note during the season
changes.

On the diagram below label the degrees of latitude for each of the 5 major lines of latitude.
This diagram shows the earth in its yearly orbit around the sun.



On the diagram draw lines that show the line over which the sun’s rays are most intense.
Label where extremes in day/night may occur (Ex 24hrs of daylight or darkness)
Label the season that would occur at each milestone date.
Figure 1 below shows that the orbit of the Earth about the sun is not circular, but instead elliptical. This means
that the distance from the Earth to the sun varies through the year. Two special events are depicted in the
diagram. Aphelion (July 4) is when the Earth is as far away from the sun as it ever gets. Perihelion (Jan. 3)
is when the Earth is as close to the sun as it ever gets. Note that these events do not correspond to the
coldest and hottest months for us in the Northern Hemisphere. The purpose of this is to show that distance
from the sun has nothing to do with seasons.
