KATARINA ROXON
KATARINA ROXON Paralympic gold metal winner in
100-m breaststroke
Katarina Roxon has put Newfoundland and Labrador
on the map in the world of Paralympic swimming. She
has competed in over 25 national and international
competitions including Rio Paralympic Games
2016, Para-Pan-American Games 2015, and London
Paralympic Games 2012. At the age of 15, Katarina was
the youngest Canadian swimmer on the Beijing 2008
Paralympic team. Since 2005, Katarina has continuously
broken National records along with world records in the
200m Butterfly and 1500m Freestyle. Katarina has not
only made her hometown of Kippens, NL proud but the
entire province. Katarina truly embodies what it means
to be a community hero by demonstrating to children and
youth that with hard work and dedication you can achieve
great success. Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador is
thrilled to invite Katarina to deliver the keynote address at
the 2017 AGM and conference.

A hero can be defined as a person who has special achievements,
abilities or personal qualities, and is regarded as a role model.

PLAYGROUND SAFETY WORKSHOP
Date: Wednesday, May 24, 2017
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Location: Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex
Designed for recreation leaders (staff and volunteers)
who would like to learn about responsibly building and
maintaining a community playground. Participants will receive
an awareness of all phases of planning and maintaining a
playground including identifying the target audience, site
location, playground design, installation, maintenance and
risk management. A site visit to a local playground will be
included, and participants will also receive a Playground

RECREATION PRACTITIONER TRAINING

Designed for Recreation Practitioners (permanent recreation
staff).
Recreation Practitioner Training will offer current insights and
knowledge to support the operational and management of
recreation services. Topics will include:
• Users Liability for Recreation Facilities (insurance
representatives will provide and overview of Users Liability
and the various insurance options for consideration as part of
a risk management program).
• Regulating Alcohol Use in Recreation (representatives from
the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Licensing Board will
provide an overview of the Liquor Licensing Act as it relates
to the sale and consumption of alcohol in a community
recreation environment).
• Arena Round Table Share best practices and greatest
challenges. This is an excellent opportunity for the arena
community to exchange ideas, concerns, tips and tricks, as
well as examines key issues affecting arena facilities.

WORKSHOP

of how to start a community garden. Partnering with Food First

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
While there are many funding programs that offer opportunities for recreation leaders to secure new funds to support a wide
range of recreation programs, services, equipment and facilities, it can be challenging to identify and focus on those that best
meet your community’s needs.
This session will engage you in:
• A discussion on the many funding opportunities available
• Which funding program best meets your needs
• Key elements in the application and selection process such as:
- Use of the funds secured
- Evaluating and reporting requirements
Participants are encouraged to bring along samples of funding programs that they have found successful.

OLDER ADULT PROGRAMMING
Recreation NL has developed Active for Life, in partnership with the School of Human Kinetics & Recreation and Eastern Health,
a program for preventing falls through physical activity for older adults. This session will provide you with the knowledge of the
new program offered by Recreation NL as well as other older adult programming that currently exists within Newfoundland and
Labrador.

PROGRAMMING FOR SMALL TOWNS
While the process for planning community recreation programs follows general program planning principles, there are additional
elements of planning and design that need to be considered for small towns. This session will explore the important role
that recreation programming plays within the community and will focus on the key considerations in planning for successful
community recreation programming in small towns.

FROM CLINICAL TO COMMUNITY– MAKING THE CONNECTION, WORKING BETTER TOGETHER
(NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR THERAPEUTIC RECREATION)
Therapeutic recreation is the systematic process of using recreation and leisure to meet the needs of persons with illnesses or
other disabling conditions. Community integration is a component within the model of therapeutic recreation practice whereby
clients apply what they learn in treatment to successfully participate in community activities. This session will explore the
process of therapeutic recreation, how therapeutic recreation can be used in a community setting, and how we can work better
together in improving the quality of life for those we serve.

STRENGTHENING CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH INFORMATION SESSION
The information provided in the Strengthening Children’s Mental Health workshop is based on the research and expertise of the
mental health and recreation sectors across Canada. Join Master Trainer, Annette Oldford as she provides an overview of what
is involved in this 1-day workshop. Annette will express the importance of having front-line staff trained to identify key concepts
related to children’s mental health.

relaxed session where delegates can talk to Katarina about her experiences, successes and passion.
