Fellow Pilots of JetBlue, Our membership drive has been

June 23, 2014
Fellow Pilots of JetBlue,
Our membership drive has been very successful: Over 2,040 JetBlue pilots are now active
members of the Air Line Pilot Association, International, and new applications are being
processed every day.
Given the historical nature of this achievement in such a short period of time, and while we
continue working on the membership push, it’s time for the current active members to
nominate and elect permanent local council representatives, who in turn will elect our
permanent MEC officers. At the direction of Captain Bill Couette, vice presidentadministration, ALPA staff is working with your local council officers to start the election
process.
The local council election process is comprised of three steps, and it will take several months
to complete.
First, very soon a nomination ballot will be sent to every member in active status. That ballot
will be used to nominate their candidate of choice for captain representative, first officer
representative and secretary/treasurer. The position of secretary/treasurer can be filled by
either a captain or a first officer. This process works very much like an election, in that the
two members who receive the most nominations for each position will become candidates
for each office. The nomination ballots will be counted at local council meetings called by the
temporary LEC chairman according to procedures established in Section 90 of ALPA’s
Administrative Manual.
Second, once the nominating process has produced two candidates for each office, ALPA will
conduct elections for captain representative, first officer representative and
secretary/treasurer between the two candidates for each position.
Third, once the permanent representatives are elected, another election will be scheduled to
determine the positions of local council chairman and vice chairman between the newly elected
captain and the first officer representatives.
Additional information about the nomination and election process will be sent to your homes this
week. In the meantime, if you have not submitted a member application, please act quickly, so you
can participate in the nomination and election process. If you know someone who has not mailed an
application yet, encourage them to do so soon.
Many of you know that your interim MEC has discussed various options for representation structures.
Those discussions will certainly continue, but it’s important that representatives elected by the
JetBlue pilots make these essential decisions. It’s also of paramount importance to have the
permanent elected representatives at the ALPA Board of Directors meeting in Hollywood, Fla. this
coming fall so we are properly represented at this pivotal event. To be clear, by electing
representatives using the traditional ALPA representation model, we are not committing to that
model forever. Instead, we’re just making sure that JetBlue pilots have the opportunity to elect the
representatives who will guide us through the ensuing process that will determine the best
representation structure for our group.
Thank you for the overwhelming and positive response during the membership drive. That amazing
show of participation will allow us to speak with one voice as we diligently work toward our first
collective bargaining agreement.
Fraternally and respectfully,
Captain Jim Bigham
