

1804-1806-Two soldiers Meriwether Lewis and
William Clark were sent on an expedition to map the
Louisiana Territory.
A Shoshone women named Sacagawea came with
them and guided them over the Rocky Mountains .

THE ACQUISITION OF FLORIDA

Florida was first controlled by Spain
The U.S. –(Andrew Jackson) attacked Spanish forts,
Spain gave Florida to the U.S.
The U.S. paid $5,000,000 to the Georgia settlers for
lost slaves and damaged property
THE SEMINOLE TRIBE MOVES TO OKLAHOMA


The government
ordered the Seminoles
to leave, but they
refused.
They fought one more
war but they lost and
were forced to settle in
Oklahoma.









Spain controlled Mexico
In 1820 Mexico was free
and owned part of Texas.
“Come to Mexico-Free
Land!”
1830-20,000 Americans
moved to Mexico
Many of the American
settlers wanted to break
away from Mexico
In 1836 a fight started
between the Mexicans and
the Texans at the Alamo.
The Mexicans won.
Six weeks later 700 Texans
attacked the Mexican Army
and won.
Nine years later, Texas
becomes an American state.
ACQUISITION OF OREGON COUNTRY

1844-President James Polk- said,
“Fifty-four forty or fight
Latitude 54, 40 degrees north
In 1846 Britain agreed to a
boundary drawn at latitude 49
degrees north. All land to the
south was given to the US.
Land was given away for free.
Fights broke out between the
Native Americans and the
Americans.
MEXICAN CESSION-GADSDEN PURCHASE

1848-1853- The US got into a war
with Mexico.
The Mexican government wanted
Texas back.
Mexico and America fought over
the boundary line.
In 1848 Mexico gave up a huge
amount of land to the US.
America paid Mexico for the land.
In 1853 America bought more
land known as the Gadsden
Purchase.
