As one of the greatest imaginations of
all time, Walt Disney once said “Where would I be without my imagination? … if we don’t use our imag
inations to their full potential then some of lives greatest moments are being left behind”. If Mr.
Disney never realised this our lives would be without some movie classics. These classics hold man
y different memories for each individual. If we lived in a world with no imagination we would be ve
ry boring, all the same and no one would have creativity. In the book The Handsomest Drowned Man in
the World by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, she seems to show a world that begins with no imagination and
develops creativity, diversity and faith. Our imaginations are made from our experiences and what we
take out of them. Imagination is a necessary trait for happiness.
In the text, it be
comes apparent that we can internalise our thoughts and ideas. The story has many examples of this
for instance our imaginations help to give meaning or reasoning to abstract things. The author sho
ws this by the way that the characters used their imaginations to attribute characteristics to the d
ead body of Esteban. These characteristics were not really there “The first children who saw the da
rk and slinky bulge approaching through the sea let themselves think it was an enemy ship”(p.274).

ighest ceiling, and he strongest floor… his wife would have been the happiest woman”(p.276). Our pe
rception of things changes as our environment and the people in our environment changes. Our minds
can make us perceive things that are surreal like mirages in the desert. Perceptions are outlined i
n this story, the examples the author gives are more where perception has gone wrong, she sees the p
erceptions of the people on the island as an isolated perception. The people of “Esteban’s Village”
perceive the world around them changing for the better as Esteban comes into their lives. Their wo
rld started out with “Village[s] made up of only twenty odd wooden houses that had stone courtyards
with no flowers and which were spread out on the end of a desertlike cape.”(p.274). As Esteban came
into their lives their world seemed to physically brighten. Not only that but the emotional state
of the inhabitants of “Esetban’s Village” seemed to brighten as well, “In future years [visitors] wo
uld awaken, suffocated by the smell of gardens… the sun’s so bight that the sunflowers don’t know wh
ich way to turn, yes, that’s ‘Esteban’s village’”(p.278).
