This is an 'in your face' look at the consequences of drinking and driving and is experienced by every student at the school and hundreds from the community. Throughout the first day, students are removed from class by the grim reaper and a police officer reads their obituary. They are pulled every 15 minutes to symbolize the statistic of drinking and driving deaths. At lunch, there is an amazing accident scene with several deaths, a medevac helicopter, fire rescue and a drunk driving arrest. More than 1,500 students watched the scene plus another 400+ community members. This is followed by an emergency room life saving attempt, a police booking, court trial, jail tour and funeral. On the following day there are two assemblies where all students are in attendance and a video is shown of the previous day’s events. The Lions have been at the forefront of producing, managing and working the event since its inception in 1999. Thank you Chairman Scott Newton, Chief Joe, all of the first responders and the many Seal Beach Lions who participated in this event. See Lion Mike Gibbons for tickets. Page 4 MAY 2015 Meet Lion Ramona Kies Member since 2014 A native Californian, Ramona has lived in Huntington Beach since 1979. She is currently employed by Verizon as a Senior Analyst for Vendor Management, which entails a good amount of traveling on a regular basis, currently to Thunder Bay, Canada, Midland/Odessa and San Antonio, Texas, Atlanta, Georgia, Silver Spring, Maryland and now 2 sites in Iowa. Ramona joined the Lions a little over a year ago, but has fully integrated into being a dedicated volunteer for all major events. Her favorite is the Arts Fest in September because she loves art and likes to see what’s new in the art world as well as visiting with the vendors. Being an avid gardener, she looks forward to buying some “cool” plants there. Her most memorable event has been the Fish Fry. Ramona comments, “It’s great to see how organized and efficient the event is, better every year. Last year, I worked both days and it was such fun seeing people enjoying the sunshine, great food, drink and entertainment. It felt so good to be a Lion and provide that kind of excitement on a large scale!” On her last vacation she went to the Bay area to visit her sister, shortly after Christmas, so everything was still decorated. “ So charming and the air was so refreshing….winter crisp!” says Ramona. Of all the countries in the world she would like to visit is Cambodia and Costa Rica: Cambodia for the history, food and warm, friendliness of the people; Costa Rica just because it looks like FUN and is so tropical and colorful. On her bucket list, #1, is learning to play the guitar….not like Eddie Van Halen or Prince, just something more acoustic. She vows to do it…just needs to find the time! She’s especially proud of her daughter, Cameron, who graduates high school in June and is off to college in the Fall. Cam has been a Leo for 5 years and now, having just joined, is an official Seal Beach Lion! As they say, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” so we’ll continue to see Mom and daughter, together, bringing their energetic enthusiasm in service to the Lions! JUST FOR FUN….LITTLE KNOW FACTS ABOUT MEMBER……. Sue Charles ’12: “Not a very exciting life. My grandmother taught me to sew, crochet, embroider and knit. Lucky kid to have such a loving teacher! I love to swim and was once a lifeguard and a swim teacher for toddlers. That was a challenge but such fun. And believe it or not, as a 4-year old, in 1962 I attended the World’s Fair and the opening of the Space Needle. I still remember how exciting it was!” Renee Gromley-Schulte ’90 and Bruce Gromley ’91: “Once upon a time, Bruce, his son, Neil, nephew Brian and I ventured upon a dream vacation of visiting several National Parks. After camping at Zion, Yellowstone, Yosemite and the Grand Tetons, we landed in South Laker Tahoe and camped 50 yards from South Lake Tahoe Blvd. As experienced back-packers/campers, we put our food high above the ground in the trees away from the local predators. Little did we know that “Charlie,” the local bear in our Lake Tahoe campground, loved leftover chicken and wine, It rained very hard that night and all of us neglected to clean up our campsite after card games and fun. We woke up the next morning to camp mayhem. A determined “Charlie” had made off with our next meals and we have the bear teeth marks visible on our ice chest to prove it. We survived and so did “Charlie,” thankful that he let us sleep!” Page 5 MAY 2015 Original Parts Group Car Show – April 11, 2015 By Chairman Lion Laurin DeVine The lions club enjoyed a very successful event this year at the OPG car show netting $2197.00 and $33.00 in the tip jar!! On Friday Lions Mike Ferrara, Mark Newton, Scott Newton, Cathy Newton, Roco Mann, Victor Grgas, and Bill Howes loaded the truck so all was ready to go Saturday morning.. Lion Scott Newton prepared the pancake mix, sausages, coffee, and orange juice at the Methodist Church kitchen. Lion Michelle Nowicki and I met Scott at 5:15 AM and loaded the finished products on to the truck for the short trip to the OPG parking lot. Michelle and I arrived at the OPG parking lot at 5:40 AM and started to unload the truck. At 6 AM we received help from a number of Leo’s and from Lion Ray Longoria. Ray rallied the Leo’s and the unloading began in earnest with additional help from Lion’s Tomas Vasquez, Lety Moya, Mike Ferrara and Mike Haley. Lion Scott Newton helped with the setup ensuring we had a smooth flow for our customers. We were ready for our first customers by 6:30 AM. From 6:30 AM until 7:30 AM we served mostly coffee with an occasional pancake breakfast. A number of Leos walked down the car staging area to let the drivers know that the Lions Club was serving a pancake breakfast. From 7:30 AM until 9:30 AM we served approximately 100 pancake breakfast meals with lunch request (bratwurst/hotdogs) starting as early as 9 AM. From 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM we served approximately 400 lunch meals; at 11:30 AM we did a store run for more Coke, relish, and a stop at the Lions garage for additional ice. By 1:00 PM we were sold out of the bratwurst, hotdogs, and spicy sausage; we started to tear down and load the truck and were back at the garage by 1:30 PM unloading. I had great support from the Leo’s who were engaged throughout the day! A special thanks to Lions Mike Ferrara, Tomas Vasquez, Doc Hall, and Mark Newton on the grill; Lion’s Chardy Lang, Lety Vasquez, Ramona Kies, and Molly Bounds who kept the customer flow moving by assisting the Leos and ensuring tables were wiped down, buns were placed in bun holders, and all of the small details that make for a great event; Lion’s Victor Grgas, and Rocco Mann for loading the truck on Friday and Saturday and helping to unload the truck at the Garage Saturday afternoon. I really appreciate the support that I received from Scott Newton and from Mike Haley. You both were extremely helpful ensuring that we had a successful event. Thank you both! Seal Beach Car Show Thanks Chairman Mark Newton for a great Pancake Breakfast! We all camped out in less than modern classrooms with minimal amenities but enjoyed lots of local fun with the Baja Senora Lions club. Over a 2 day period we served over 800 very needy people. Our clinic opened up at 5:30am. Long-time Lion Dave Hubbard was asked to walk the plank on April 10 as Lions from around the District roasted him. Lion Dave has now retired and is moving to Cayucos. Per his request, all the proceeds from the roast will be donated to the LCIF Measles Initiative.
