SAVE A LIFE
Adopting rather than ‘shopping’ for a pet is becoming increasingly popular, making it clear that the heart
warming feeling we get from saving an abandoned animal is taking over the pet ownership world. This is an
area that Just For Pets feels very passionately about, and this is how our Save A Live concept was born.
We are not alone in our support for rehoming abandoned pets.
When approaching Save A Life Day in back in February, we
asked a member of our network if she was able to offer her
support. She politely declined, as her heart was already full
with love for her very own rescue dog Maximus. Here is her
story:
“As much as I would love to support your adoption
drive, I have already got my rescue dog, and I couldn’t
be happier. I thought I would share my story:”
Maximus was on the Blacktown Animal Holding Facility
website, we were looking for a Labrador, but when I saw him
I couldn’t go past him. He was $62, 6 years old, vaccinated
and de-sexed. I went to go and see him that evening. He was
in the “cage” with a 12 month old puppy, who was bouncing
around and Max was backed up into the corner shaking. It still
brings tears to my eyes when I think about it. I went and asked
the lady at the desk if I could play with him for a minute, I also
asked which one of them was sick, as there was quiet a “mess”
in the cage. They advised me that he had kennel cough – he
had only been there for 4 days. She asked if was sure I didn’t
want to take the puppy, I said that I wanted him.
I took him out into the play yard and patted him, he hung his
head and shied away – I persisted. He wouldn’t move very
much and was clearly quite sick, but then he looked at me,
put his front paws on my leg as I crouched in front of him, and
licked my cheek... I had to have him.
It’s stories like this that make Just For Pets so
confident in the decision to rescue abandoned pets.
Beautiful Maximus has now found the home that he
deserves, and he has filled a hole in the hearts of a
family that didn’t even know they were missing their
beloved four legged family member.
Given where I work I showed up a couple of days
later with the most elaborate setup for a dog
that the staff there had ever seen, she handed
me a piece of rope that was tied to his collar.
I took that off, and put his nice new shiny
collar and lead on him, took him to the car,
where he had a travel rug and a car harness,
to take him home where he now has 4 beds
around the house. After everything that he has
put us through, 2 hospital stays, 3 escapes, and
numerous destroyed items, Max is 11 years old
next month, and we can’t imagine our lives without him.
Regards,
Abi Spilsted”

PETS IN WINTER
Winter in some parts of Australia can be
harsh, and it is important to remember
that our pets need special attention during
these long, cold months.
DIET
In the colder months, pets’ diets need to increase in energy
intake rather than fat content. Animals shouldn’t gain weight
over winter; they should just maintain body condition. As
your pet is burning more energy in winter to keep warm, it is
important to make sure they have plenty of water. As food
intake varies for different pets and breeds, it is best to refer to
your local Pet Expert for specific feeding requirements.
EXERCISE
As we all know, the last thing we want to do in winter is go out
and face those cold, harsh conditions. Although it is much
more comfortable to curl up under a blanket, our dogs need
to be exercised regularly for their physical and mental health.
So put on a nice warm coat and head outside; your dog’s
wellbeing will thank you for it.
8
WARM
SHELTER
One of the most important
things for a pet that is kept
outside in winter is to
ensure they have a warm
place to sleep at night.
Dogs and cats that are lean,
have short coats or do not
have a double coat need
an extra layer of protection
from the elements, such as
wind and rain. They need
insulated kennels,
blankets,
and
raised
beds that
keep them off the cold ground. An insulated kennel is best for
all outside pets, and make sure the opening of the kennel is not
facing the wind.
*COLD TIP: Attach a dog or cat door to the opening of the
kennel. That way the kennel opening can be closed off so
the cold isn’t constantly flowing in, but your pet can still
push through the flap to get in or out.*
Rabbits cope well living outside in the colder months, provided
they have a warm shelter to go to. The shelter must be well
insulated, water proof, and raised off the ground to encourage
the air to circulate and stop the bottom becoming damp. Heat
mats are also a great addition to their hutch that will keep it
toasty and warm.
Guinea pigs should not be housed outside during the
extremes of winter, as their survival rate dramatically
decreases when the temperature drops below 17°C. They are
very susceptible to temperature
changes, so a mild 22°C
winter’s day that
drops to 7°C
overnight can lead to an Upper Respiratory Infection that could
become fatal if not treated.
GROOMING
It is during winter that your pet’s coat must be at its best, as
this is when they need the insulation. Shorthaired breeds have
short coats that do not insulate as well therefore they will need
the extra protection of a coat. Long coat breeds are able to self
insulate, however owners must make sure that their coat does
not have any mats or debris, as this will interrupt the insulation
effect. Pets still need to be washed in winter, however not as
regularly. Make sure it is done on a relatively warm day, and
that they are towel or blow dried thoroughly before being
exposed to the elements. It is also important to check your
pet’s paws after a walk, because the cold, wet ground can
cause cracks or redness between the toes.
suffer from the pain and disability caused by arthritis, and it
is more common in outdoor dogs. This is a very debilitating
disease that will dampen your dog’s quality of life if not treated,
so it is important to be aware.
Checking for arthritis:
It is important to ask your Pet Expert to check for the signs of
arthritis, such as soreness or restriction in the limbs, clicking
or crunching sounds when moving the limbs, or behavioural
abnormalities. If your pet is showing these signs, you will be
referred to a vet where treatments will be discussed.
CARS = WINTER DANGER
One of the largest pet dangers in winter is actually our car.
Firstly, the chemical Antifreeze which can leak from your cars
radiator, tastes delicious to animals, however it is deadly if
consumed. If you see your animal acting drunk or convulsing,
take them to a vet immediately.
Secondly, a very inviting spot for your cat to curl up and
sleep in is underneath or inside of your car’s bonnet.
There have been many cases where a cat is inside the
car’s motor and the car is started, leading to tragedy. For
this reason we suggest keeping animals away from garages at
winter, and be careful of chemical spills if you take them for a
walk and see them sniffing around a neighbour’s driveway.
REMEMBER if it is too cold for you, it is
probably too cold for your pet!
If this article has got you thinking about how
you can better protect your pet in winter, visit
your local Just For Pets pet expert today for
advice.
HEALTH CONCERNS
During winter, animals are more susceptible to health concerns
because their immune systems are lower due to exposure to
stress from the cold. Regular physical examinations from a
Pet Expert or Vet are advised in winter to make sure your pet
is coping. Illnesses such as Frostbite and Hypothermia are
common during winter months, and can be fatal if not treated.
Look out for signs of these illnesses, such as firm, waxy skin
and blisters.
ARTHRITIS
Arthritis is a very common illness that can flare up in colder
months, often caused by injury, obesity, or genetics. 1 in 5 dogs

UNDERSTANDING
PET INSURANCE
Have you considered what would happen if
your pet has an accident or serious illness?
You might need to find some funds in a hurry
for medical costs. Owning a pet is a privilege
and providing health care is just one of the
expenses you need to be prepared for, just
like providing food.
Pet insurance mainly provides cover for veterinary fees if
your pet is injured or becomes ill. It can give you peace of
mind that you’re in a position to afford all the veterinary
care that your pet might need.
MAKE SURE YOU GET THE BEST PET INSURANCE FOR YOUR PET
Pet Insurance premiums and excess will vary depending on the terms of the policy and it is important you read the fine print to
make sure you know exactly what your pet is and is not covered for.
If your pet has a pre-existing medical condition you should inform the Pet Insurer to see how it may impact your policy and
coverage.
Generally speaking like all forms of insurance one area to consider is a larger excess generally means lower ongoing premiums.
You also need to weigh up the cover amount and annual premium as a higher cover amount with additional features will mean
higher ongoing premiums.
WHAT ARE THE CHANCES MY PET WILL NEED VET TREATMENT?
Statistics show that one in every 3 pets will require emergency treatment each year. Just like other forms of insurance pet
insurance helps cover the cost of the unexpected.
WHAT TYPES OF PET INSURANCE POLICIES ARE AVAILABLE?
The cover provided by different products can vary considerably, ranging from accident-only policies to lifetime cover policies. You
should choose the type of product and the level of cover to meet your needs.
UNDERSTANDING THE INCLUSIONS & COVERAGE
While a lot of pet insurance providers focus on the basic inclusions be sure to look further into additional inclusions these
range from Complementary Treatments, Third Party Liability (dogs only), Death from Illness, Death from Injury, Boarding
Fees, Advertising and Rewards, Loss by Theft or Straying, Holiday cancellation and Multi-Pet Discount to Specialist care and
Prescription diets.
12
EXCLUSIONS & FINE PRINT
When taking out Pet Insurance as with any insurance policy
it is important to read the fine print so you know exactly what
you pet is and is not covered for.
DID YOU KNOW?
• 1 in 3 pets will require unplanned veterinary
treatment in any one year.
Before taking out a policy you can find all the detailed
information in the Pet Insurance Product Disclosure Statement
(PDS), exclusions should be listed in this document.
• The cost of veterinary care is rising as vets have
access to more sophisticated equipment for
both diagnostics and treatment.
Waiting Periods: Many policies will have waiting periods
before you can claim certain benefits. This can be weeks or up
to 6 months for expensive procedures such as cruciate knee
ligaments.
• Pet owners are more likely to claim on their pet
insurance than their car or household policies.

DON’T FORGET
ABOUT THE BIRD!
On top of all the other things we need to remember when preparing to go away for a period of time, it is
important to remember to prepare the pet bird!
What many people don’t realise is that birds can fret when their
owners go away, so it is important to ensure that you take the
necessary steps to keep them happy while you are gone.
There are a few ways to do so:
FEEDING
If you are going away for more than a few days, leaving food
in the birdcage is not going to cut it. It is essential that you
find someone who will come to the birds and feed them and
check their water regularly. This needs to be someone who is
experienced and comfortable with birds, because even though
there might only be brief interactions between the bird and the
18
feeder, much like a baby a bird will pick up on this stress and
reflect it in their own behaviour.
TOYS AND ENTERTAINMENT
As the bird’s mind is not being stimulated by you or any of
the other family members, it is important to give them tricks
and toys that will stop them using their energy destructively.
A bored bird can turn on itself or its environment very quickly.
Include things for them to climb on and toys that provide a
bit of a game; texture and shred-able items are a hit. Another
entertainment idea is to keep a radio playing quietly in your
house while you are away. This will depend on the individual
bird’s preferences to noise; if you are a loud household then this will be quite comforting,
however if they prefer the quiet then a radio is most likely unnecessary.
CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
It is important to ensure that the person you assign to care for your bird knows how to
clean and maintain their environment. The cage liner should be changed daily, water and
food dishes cleaned with warm water every few days, and the cage accessories need to
be cleaned and droppings removed. It is important your carer is comfortable with these
tasks. Your carer also needs to be able to recognise the signs of a healthy or unhealthy
bird. If your bird is not coping with the change in circumstances it needs to be dealt with
sooner rather than later. A bird that has lost feathers or has an appearance of stress bars,
seems more aggressive than usual, or is not feeding properly, indicates that they are
stressed and most likely need veterinary attention.
FAMILIARITY
A sure way to keep your bird’s stress levels low is to keep things as normal as possible.
Keep the food and feeding times the same, the cage location the same, cleaning cage
days the same, and so on. It is also a great idea to introduce your bird to the carer a few
times with you present, so that they understand they are not an attacker, they are a very
friendly person who is just coming to help out. Some bird owners also say that if they
talk about the holiday around the bird and tell the bird what is going on, that it comes as
less of a shock when they leave. It may sound crazy to some, but birds are very intelligent
animals and they will become aware that you are trying to communicate something
different.
BOARDING
If you find your bird has had a
negative experience being at
home alone in the past, or you find
yourself uncomfortable with the
thought of your feathered friend
being lonely, you can always send
them to a bird boarder. The bird
boarding team cares for each bird
individually, ensuring that fresh
food and water is always available.
In addition to this, birds are
provided with human interaction,
exercise and an enriching
environment.

YOUR PET
LOOKS TO YOU
FOR DENTAL CARE
Untreated dental problems can
lead to more serious problems
such as illnesses related to the
heart, liver and kidney.
Dogs are pack animals and showing
weakness is not part of their nature.
They need to eat to survive so won’t go
off their food until the pain is unbearable.
Pets can’t brush their teeth, but just like
people, dogs and cats are at risk for
dental problems that can cause pain
and serious health issues. Your pet is
counting on you for dental care to stay
healthy and happy.
CAUSES OF
PERIODONTAL
DISEASE
Periodontal disease is caused by an
accumulation of plaque. Plaque is a
colourless film that contains large
amounts of potentially harmful bacteria.
If left unchecked, built-up plaque can
create infection, destroying your pet’s
gums and the tissue and bone that
support the teeth. Preventive oral care
can reduce plaque and help maintain
proper oral health.
SIGNS OF
PERIODONTAL
DISEASE
Four out of
every five dogs
and cats over the
age of three years have
some sort of dental disease
which becomes more severe
with age.

BETTAS
These fish belong to the Anabantid family and share the common trait that they can breath oxygen
out of the air. They do this through a special organ called the Labyrinth Organ which is a modified gill
which sits in a cavity above the gills. The fish is able to gulp air from the water surface which passes
into the labyrinth organ where oxygen is taken out – by using this they are able to survive in small,
muddy water-holes and it is often said that these species can live in elephant footprints!
Bettas have spectacular finnage and a huge range of colours make this an enormously popular pet. Male bettas must NOT be
kept together as they will fight to the death. However, both males and females can be kept in community tropical tanks with other
fish varieties but always remember – only one male per tank!
Females Betta’s are not as colourful as males, and have relatively small fins.
22
FEEDING
TEMPERATURE
COLOUR
Feed floating pellets such as Tetra
Bettamin Tropical Medley, live
blackworm, freeze dried black worm or
AI Naturals Frozen Bloodworm.
Siamese Bettas originate in warm water
and should always be kept above 18ºC.
In colder states such as Vic and Tas,
they will require a heater during winter
months.
Well known for their fighting habits,
males have been bred to have
magnificent finnage in many spectacular
colour varieties. Blue, red and ocean
green are the most popular. Females
are not as colourful as males, and have
relatively small fins.
TEMPERAMENT
IN HOME TANKS
Male Siamese Bettas are extremely
aggressive toward each other. In
the confines of an aquarium, battles
between males often end in death.
However, they are usually peaceful
towards other fish.
Conditions in established home
aquariums are usually quite suited
for keeping these fish. Good animal
husbandry is essential — ensure low
population densities, plenty of hiding
places, low bacteria levels and good
water quality. In small tanks they
will require frequent water changes
and good water maintenance—we
recommend Tetra Betta Safe as a
suitable water conditioner for your Betta.
and swim freely. In a shared aquarium, a
little extra care may be needed at feeding
time to ensure they get their share, and
to ensure that other fish do not nip at
their elaborate finnage.
BREEDING
These fish are not difficult to breed
at home. Females lay eggs which are
scooped up by the male and cared for in
a floating bubble nest.
Always take care that they are
not restricted in their
movements and
are able to turn
Siamese Bettas make an ideal

LITTER TRAY WOES
GETTING IT RIGHT FROM THE GET GO!
Statistics show that many cats become abandoned or surrendered over litter
tray behavioural issues than many other feline situations in the home.
Choosing the correct litter tray, placing
it in a prime location in your home,
and selecting the right litter are key
components to the happy felinehuman bond.
26
SIZE MATTERS!
CHOOSE THE
RIGHT LITTER FOR
YOUR CAT
Whether your new addition is a fullygrown cat or a tiny kitten, your litter
tray can never be too big! The way to
gauge the correct size is to ensure that
your cat and turn round comfortably
inside it. Often hooded litter boxes can
be deceiving; they look large from the
outside but the actual size of the pan
inside is small – so ensure you look
before you purchase.
There are lots of different litter choices
from clumping clay to products
made from wood and even recycled
newspapers.
When selecting a new litter, it’s
important to find one that not only will
your cat approve of and use, but one that
will effectively deal with odour issues.
LOCATION!
LOCATION!
LOCATION!
Where your litter tray is situated in the
home is equally important because
your cat must feel comfortable using it.
Stay away from high traffic zones in the
household such as hallways and lounge
rooms.
Before bringing home your cat, it’s a
really good idea to ask what type of litter
your cat or kitten has been using.
The general rule is one litter tray per cat.
In multi-cat households, never line the
trays up in a row because if there are
feline territorial issues or arguments,
cats will often ambush one another at
the litter tray.
Cats do like their privacy and they also
like to be able to see who is coming or
going around them.
Transitioning to a new home is
often stressful for cats as they grow
accustomed to a strange environment,
so providing a familiar litter in the box
is one less thing for them to have to
deal with in a new home. However, that
doesn’t mean you have to stick with that
choice once your cat settles in.
For cat food, litter, bedding, toys, and
more information on how to care for
your cat or kitten, speak to a Pet Expert
at your local Just For Pets store today.
