The photograph below was taken at San Agustin
Cathedral in Laredo. That beautiful November morning, I
joined hundreds of modern-day disciples, youth and adults
from our parishes and missions, who walked in pilgrimage
to mark the end of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of
Mercy, and to show our faithful resolve to work together to
build up God’s kingdom on earth. We stood together that
morning to demonstrate our love for Jesus, forming a cross
that symbolizes our common mission as members of the
body of Christ, His Church.
Each day of our lives, our mission
to love should be ever-present in
our thoughts, but also in our actions
towards our family, friends and
neighbors in need. As your Bishop,
I ask you to demonstrate that love
through your active participation in
parish and diocesan ministry.

La fotografía mostrada abajo fue tomada en noviembre
en la Catedral de San Agustín en Laredo. En esa hermosa
mañana me uní con cientos de discípulos de hoy en día,
jóvenes y adultos de nuestras parroquias y misiones, que
peregrinaron para marcar el final del Año del Jubileo
Extraordinario de la Misericordia y dar testimonio de
nuestra fiel determinación para trabajar juntos para
construir el Reino de Dios en la tierra. Nos unimos esa
mañana para mostrar nuestro amor por Jesús, formando
una cruz que representa nuestra misión común como
miembros del cuerpo de Cristo, su Iglesia.
Cada día de nuestras vidas, nuestra
misión de amor debe estar siempre
presente en nuestros pensamientos,
como también en nuestras acciones
hacia nuestros familiares, amigos y
vecinos necesitados. Como su Obispo,
les pido que demuestren ese amor a
través de su participación activa en el
ministerio diocesano y parroquial.

DEAR FR. JOE: Whenever I hear people talking about
apologetics, I get confused. It sounds like apologizing,
and I don’t think we need to apologize for our faith! What
am I misunderstanding?

First, let’s define apologetics. It’s a
tougher thing to do than you would
think, because the word is flexible enough to
be used in a few ways.
These days, when we say we are
apologizing, what we are usually doing
is asking someone’s forgiveness in an
informal way: “I apologize for laughing
when your team fumbled and my team
scored.”
Believe it or not, its original usage was
different: to apologize meant to explain one’s
behavior or to defend oneself. In fact, the
word “apolog”’ comes from the Greek word
apologia, which means “speak in return,
defend oneself.” The first time I heard of
this was when I read Socrates’ Apology,
which was his public defense at his trial
for numerous charges. Socrates stepped
forward, addressed each of their charges
and explained why he was innocent, or,
in some cases, why he was guilty, but why
what he was guilty of was a good thing.
Over time, the usage of the word has
evolved and, as I typed earlier, we tend
in common speech to use it to mean,
“I’m sorry.”

faith and/or teaching.
We can use apologetics to explain
Catholic teaching or doctrine to those
who have “why” type questions. We can
also use apologetics to defend our faith
when an atheist or non-Catholic Christian
asks for more information from us.
Now that we have an understanding
of what apologetics is, I hope we see that
apologetics is, to some extent, the call of
every Catholic.
In 1 Peter 3:15-16, we see these words
from our first pope: “Always be ready to
give an explanation to anyone who asks
you for a reason for your hope, but do it
with gentleness and reverence, keeping
your conscience clear, so that, when you
are maligned, those who defame your
good conduct in Christ may themselves
be put to shame.”
We can and should use these words as a
fuel to guide us into a deeper knowledge of
what we believe and why we believe it.
With that in mind, my first challenge
here is to grow in understanding our faith.
There are so many resources out there that I
dare say it would be a crazy thing for me to
attempt to whittle it down into a list. Get on
Google and type “Catholic apologetics.” Go
to your library and look for good Catholic
resources. Pick one topic and research it
so that you can understand the reason we
believe what we believe. In 1926, a noted
Catholic apologist named G.K. Chesterton
wrote, “The difficulty explaining why I am
Catholic is that there are 10,000 reasons all
amounting to one reason: that Catholicism is
true.” You’ll find that to be accurate once you
dive in – our ancient faith is beautiful!
So, now you are “armed.” You have a
deeper understanding of our faith and you
are ready to defend that faith with your

learning. In a sense, you have the “Why?”
and now you are looking for the “How?”
In my opinion, a key guiding factor in
how to defend our faith is to remember
the words of a lesser-known saint, Kenny
Rogers. He once said, “You’ve got to know
when to hold ‘em, know when to fold
‘em, know when to walk away, know
when to run.”
With the advancement of social media,
our society has become much more
combative than I remember us being in
the past. Our social media feeds are filled
with anger, criticism, virtue signaling and
all sorts of noise.
Right now, if a person were to develop
an interest in the Catholic faith and went to
Facebook or Twitter to see what Catholics
are saying, they’d see a lot of Catholics
posting about why Pope Francis is wrong
or how priests are celebrating Mass wrong.
They’ll observe a whole lot of complaining
and anger, but not much love. In my
opinion, we are our own worst enemy.
Apologists stay away from that
complaining, nitpicking and angry world,
because they understand that truth is strong
and doesn’t need our manipulations or
anger. People will move toward Catholicism
because of the truth and beauty in it, not
because we humiliated them, beat them
down and/or argued better than them. This
sort of virtuous behavior will in and of itself
be a profound witness to those who have
eyes to see and ears to hear.
A good Catholic apologist knows that
love must be the only reason we engage
in a discussion/argument about our faith.
Share with those who ask out of genuine
curiosity. Share with those who ask
because they want to know. Walk away
from the need to win and make sure you
only engage out of love and/or because
of love. In short, we don’t have to bite at
every piece of bait thrown in front of us.
Always, always, always remember that
truth is a person: Jesus Christ. We do not
want to abuse truth or use it as a weapon
to bludgeon people who irritate us. If
someone asks questions and sincerely
wants to know, meet them in that holy
curiosity and bring truth with you. Share
what you’ve learned with joy and good
humor.
Let God do the rest – it will blow you
away.

ESTIMADO PADRE JOE: : Siempre que escucho a la gente
hablar de la apologética me confundo. Suena como pedir
disculpas, y no creo que tengamos que disculparnos por nuestra
fe. ¿Qué estoy entendiendo mal?
(Nota de traductor: La palabra apologética “apologetics” en inglés suena como la
palabra disculpas “apology” por lo que esto se presta a confusión.)

En primer lugar, definamos
apologética. Definir apologética no
está tan fácil ya que la palabra es muy
flexible como para ser utilizada de varias
maneras.
En estos días, cuando decimos en inglés
“apology” nos referimos a pedir perdón a
alguien de manera informal: “Me disculpo
por reírme cuando tu equipo falló y mi
equipo anotó un gol”.
En su uso original la palabra “apology”
se usaba para explicar el comportamiento
de uno o para defenderse. De hecho, la
palabra “apology” proviene de la palabra
griega apología, que significa hablar en
favor de algo o alguien, o defenderse. La
primera vez que oí esto fue cuando leí la
Apología de Sócrates, que trata sobre su
defensa pública en su juicio por numerosos
cargos. Sócrates dio un paso adelante,
se refirió a cada uno de los cargos que le
imputaron y explicó por qué era inocente,
o, en algunos casos, por qué era culpable,
y por qué, en estos específicos casos, ser
culpable era una cosa buena.
Con el tiempo, el uso de la palabra
ha evolucionado y, como escribí antes,
tendemos en el idioma inglés a usarla para
significar, “Lo siento”.
Sin embargo, la intención original de
la palabra ha permanecido, y se utiliza
en escuelas religiosas y filosóficas. Por

has encontrado: la apologética católica.
Entonces, ¿qué es la apologética
católica? Una definición simple podría ser:
un intento de usar la razón, la Escritura
y la tradición para defender la fe y/o la
enseñanza católica.
Podemos usar la apologética para
explicar la enseñanza o la doctrina
católica a aquellos que tienen preguntas
del tipo “por qué”. También podemos usar
la apologética para defender nuestra fe
cuando un ateo o un no católico nos pide
más información.
Ahora que tenemos una comprensión
de lo que es la apologética, espero que
veamos que la apologética es, en cierta
medida, el llamado de todo católico.
En 1 Pedro 3:15-16, vemos estas palabras
de nuestro primer papa: “Estén siempre
dispuestos para dar una respuesta a
quien les pida cuenta de su esperanza,
pero háganlo con sencillez y deferencia,
sabiendo que tienen la conciencia limpia.
De este modo, si alguien los acusa,
la vergüenza será para aquellos que
calumnian la vida recta de los cristianos”.
Podemos y debemos usar estas
palabras como una motivación para
guiarnos hacia un conocimiento más
profundo de lo que creemos y por qué lo
creemos.
Teniendo esto presente, mi primer
reto aquí es crecer en la comprensión
de nuestra fe. Hay tantos recursos
disponibles que sería atrevido de mi
parte reducirlo a una lista. Ve a Google
y escribe “apologética católica”. Ve a
tu biblioteca y busca buenos recursos
católicos. Escoge un tema e investiga
para que puedas entender la razón por
la que creemos lo que creemos. En 1926,
un conocido apologista católico llamado
G.K. Chesterton escribió: “La dificultad
de explicar por qué soy católico es que
existen 10,000 razones que se suman en
una sola: que el catolicismo es verdadero”.
Luego de que investigas te darás cuenta
que esta frase es muy cierta, ¡nuestra
antigua fe es hermosa!
Así que, ahora ya estás informado.
Tienes una comprensión más profunda
de nuestra fe y estás listo para defender
esa fe con tu aprendizaje. En cierto
sentido, tienes el “¿Por qué?” Y ahora estás
buscando el “¿Cómo?”.
En mi opinión, un factor clave para guiar
nuestro dialogo es recordar las palabras del
cantante Kenny Rogers; quien en una de
sus canciones hablando sobre jugar naipes
dijo: Tienes que saber cuándo quedarte con
las cartas, cuándo pasar, cuándo alejarte de
la mesa y cuando abandonar el lugar.
Con el avance de los medios de
comunicación social, nuestra sociedad se
ha vuelto mucho más combativa. Nuestros
canales de comunicación social están
llenos de ira, críticas, señales de virtud y
todo tipo de ruido.
En este momento, si una persona
desarrollara un interés en la fe católica y
llegara a Facebook o Twitter para ver lo que
los católicos están diciendo, verían a muchos
católicos publicar acerca de por qué el
Papa Francisco está equivocado o cómo los
sacerdotes están celebrando Misa de forma
equivocada. Observarán un montón de
quejas y enojo, pero no mucho amor. En mi
opinión, somos nuestro peor enemigo.
Los apologistas se mantienen alejados
de ese mundo lleno de quejas, irritado
y enojado, porque entienden que la
verdad es fuerte y no necesita de nuestras
manipulaciones o enojo. La gente se
acercará al catolicismo debido a la verdad
y a la belleza que hay en él, no porque les
ganamos en el debate o discutimos mejor
que ellos. Este comportamiento virtuoso
será en sí mismo un testimonio profundo
para aquellos que tienen ojos para ver y
oídos para escuchar.
Un buen apologista católico sabe que el
amor debe ser la única razón por la que nos
involucramos en una discusión o argumento
acerca de nuestra fe. Se ha de compartir
con los que piden por curiosidad genuina.
Comparte con los que pregunten porque
quieren saber. Aléjate de la necesidad
de ganar y cerciórate de que solamente
compartes las razones de tu fe por amor.
Siempre, siempre, siempre recuerde que
la verdad es una persona: Jesucristo. No
queremos abusar de la verdad o usarla
como un arma para espantar a la gente
que nos irrita. Si alguien hace preguntas
y sinceramente quiere saber, atiende esa
santa curiosidad y trae contigo la verdad.
Comparte lo que has aprendido con alegría
y buen humor.
Deje a Dios hacer el resto - te
sorprenderá.

program paid off big time.
After much perseverance and
dedication, in September of this
past year, he was ordained as a
permanent deacon in the Diocese
of Laredo. As a retired teacher and
administrator, Deacon Dennis can’t
see himself doing anything else.

realmente provechosos. Después
de mucha perseverancia y
dedicación, en septiembre del
año pasado, fue ordenado como
diácono permanente en la Diócesis
de Laredo. Como maestro y
administrador jubilado, el Diácono
Dennis no se imagina haciendo
ninguna otra cosa.

“We all have that call to be good
stewards. Stewardship is not only
monetary. More than the money,
it’s the time that we put in.”
“It’s a call that an aspirant receives. Not
everyone receives this special call. It’s like
an inner voice within you. All it can say
is ‘I would like for you to help me with
the Church.’” After careful consideration
and much prayer, this inner dialogue
eventually led Deacon Dennis to register
for the diaconate program. “Being married
and having a family is one thing, but then
the relationship with our Lord and His
Church is great. It’s the culmination of my
career,” he says.
In the past, Deacon Dennis has been
an usher, lector, extraordinary minister of
holy Communion, a member of the ACTS
community and a Knight of Columbus.
Being so active in his parish, Blessed
Sacrament, this was the last major step
he could take to give back to the Church.
“The only thing left was the diaconate
program,” Deacon Dennis says. It was a
decision made not just by him, but in
consensus with his wife and family. “Like
Mom would say: ‘Write down the pluses
and minuses of everything that you do.’
And this just had so many pluses to it. It
was very special because it was a win-win
situation all the way around,” he states.
Deacon Dennis compares the diaconate
formation program to a master’s degree.
The course load is similar; there’s academic
courses, assignments, tests and research
papers. It’s a long process and a big
commitment. The first two years consist of
local classes. After completion, aspirants are
entered into a candidacy with the University
of St. Thomas in Houston with their
Theology School. There’s ups and downs
throughout the way. But he finds that
everything is possible with God and with
the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Through this new ministry, Deacon
Dennis has received many graces. “I call
them little miracles. It’s a good feeling
because there’s that relationship with our

“Es una llamada que un aspirante recibe. No todos reciben esta
llamada especial. Es como una voz dentro de ti. Lo único que te dice
esa voz es ‘Me gustaría que me ayudaras en la Iglesia’”. Después
de mucha consideración y oración, este diálogo interno lo llevó a
registrarse para el programa de diaconado. “Estar casado y tener una
familia es una cosa, pero la relación con nuestro Señor y Su Iglesia es
grandiosa. Es la culminación de mi carrera”, él dice.
En el pasado, el Diácono Dennis ha sido acomodador, Ministro de
Eucaristía, miembro de la comunidad de ACTS y Caballero de Colón. Al
estar tan activo en su Iglesia de Blessed Sacrament, este fue el último
gran paso que pudo tomar para retribuir a la Iglesia. “Lo único que faltaba
era el programa del diaconado”, dice el Diácono Dennis. Fue una decisión
que tomó junto a su esposa y su familia. “Como decía mi mamá: ‘escribe
todo lo positivo y negativo sobre cada cosa que haces.’ Y esto implicaba
tantas cosas positivas. Fue muy especial porque era una situación en la
que todos ganaban de cualquier forma en la que lo miraras”, él dice.
El Diácono Dennis compara el programa de formación diaconal
a obtener una maestría. Los requisitos son similares; hay clases
académicas, tareas, exámenes y trabajos de investigación. Es un
proceso largo y que requiere un gran compromiso. Los primeros dos
años consisten de clases locales. Después de completar estas clases,
los aspirantes entran en una candidatura en el programa de teología en
la Universidad de St. Thomas en Houston. Hay muchos altibajos en el
camino. Sin embargo, él sabe que todo es posible gracias a Dios y con
la guía del Espíritu Santo.
Por medio de este nuevo ministerio, el Diácono Dennis ha recibido
muchas bendiciones. “Yo les llamo pequeños milagros. Es un
sentimiento muy bonito porque hay una relación con el Señor”. Uno de
estos milagros pasó hace un año y medio. “Algo dentro de mí me dijo
‘necesitas ir al hospital’. Pero no sentía nada de dolor. Yo mismo manejé
al hospital. Todos los doctores estaban asombrados. Estaba teniendo
un ataque al corazón y ni siquiera lo sabía”, dice el Diácono Dennis. Se
sometió a cirugía de bypass cardiaco y se recuperó por completo.
“Él tenía un plan para mí. Esa es la manera en que yo lo veo. Me
encuentro aquí el día de hoy para contar una historia”.
Lord.” One of these miracles came a year
and half ago. “Something inside me just told
me, ‘you need to go to the hospital.’ But I
had no pain. I drove myself. All the doctors
were astounded. I was having a heart attack
and didn’t even know it,” Deacon Dennis
says. He underwent heart bypass surgery
and made a full recovery.
“He had a plan for me. That’s the way I
look at it. I’m here today to tell the story.”
Deacon Dennis feels he is at a different
stage now. Even though he was always
very involved and active at his parish, he
now feels a deeper connection. “I’m family
now at the Church. With the priest, with
my fellow deacons, the parishioners and
everyone. We’re a close family.”
Another component of his diaconate role
is assisting a diocesan ministry. Deacon
Dennis was assigned to the Stewardship and
Development Office. He finds this ministry
work very rewarding. “Because of the
program that you have in place here, you
are giving back. That’s what stewardship is.
It’s loving one another and helping people.”
Deacon Dennis also has a very personal
reason why he is grateful for this particular
ministry, “(Diaconate candidates) were
able to have our tuition paid while we
were with St. Thomas University because
of this ministry. We were able to finish the
program because of this financial help.”
Being placed in this ministry of stewardship
and development is a blessing because he
can give back to a ministry that helped him
get to where he is today.
“Él tenía un plan para mí. Esa es la manera
en que yo lo veo. Me encuentro aquí el día
de hoy para contar una historia”.
El Diácono Dennis siente que está en una etapa diferente
hoy. Aunque siempre estuvo muy involucrado y activo en
su parroquia, ahora siente una conexión muy profunda.
“Soy parte de la familia en la Iglesia. Con mi párroco, los
otros diáconos, los feligreses y todos los demás. Somos
una familia muy cercana”.
Otra responsabilidad que conlleva su rol como diácono
es ayudar en un ministerio diocesano. El Diácono Dennis
fue asignado a la Oficina de Corresponsabilidad y
Desarrollo. Él encuentra su trabajo en este ministerio muy
gratificante. “Gracias al programa que tienen aquí, están
dando de vuelta a nuestra comunidad. De eso se trata
la corresponsabilidad. El amarnos los unos a los otros y
ayudar a los demás”.
El Diácono Dennis tiene una razón muy personal de
por qué está tan agradecido con este ministerio en
particular, “Nosotros [los candidatos al diaconado]
pudimos tener nuestra colegiatura pagada mientras
estudiábamos en la Universidad de St. Thomas gracias a
este ministerio. Pudimos terminar el programa debido a
esta ayuda financiera”. Haber sido asignado a la Oficina de
Corresponsabilidad y Desarrollo es una bendición por qué
ahora puede ayudar a un ministerio que lo ayudó a llegar a
donde está hoy en día”.
“Todos nosotros tenemos la llamada a ser buenos
administradores. La corresponsabilidad no solo se trata
del dinero. No es tanto el dinero, sino el tiempo que
dedicamos”, concluye el Diácono Dennis.

WHAT IS THE CATHOLIC SHARING APPEAL (CSA)?
The Catholic Sharing Appeal is one means by
which disciples express their gratitude to God for
His many gifts, and demonstrates solidarity with the
mission of the holy Catholic Church in the Diocese
of Laredo. CSA is an annual giving campaign, which
begins in the first two weeks of February in each
parish and mission of the Diocese of Laredo.
WHY IS CSA IMPORTANT TO THE CHURCH?
The gifts received by the diocese through CSA
support the work of education, evangelization and
service ministries, which extend the love of Christ
to our brothers and sisters in the seven counties of
the Diocese of Laredo.
WHEN DOES THE CSA CAMPAIGN START AND END?
The annual Catholic Sharing Appeal campaign
begins the first two weekends of February. During
this time, the campaign is explained and pledge
envelopes are distributed during weekend Masses in
each parish and mission. You may also find a copy of
the pledge form at dioceseoflaredo.org. We would
be happy to send you a pledge form by mail. Call the
Stewardship & Development Office at 956.764.7871
The campaign ends in January 2018.

ather Francisco Quiroz received his
calling to be a priest while still in
high school. He was an altar server
and he observed how happy the
priests were. Father Quiroz told himself, “I want
to be happy like them.” After finishing high
school, he answered God’s call and entered
Assumption Seminary in San Antonio, Texas.

monaguillo y fue ahí donde vio lo
felices que eran los sacerdotes. El Padre Quiroz

After his ordination, Fr. Quiroz
was appointed parochial vicar of Our
Lady of Guadalupe Church in Carrizo
Springs. “I had a wonderful experience
there. I learned a lot there. I could
feel the support and prayers from
everyone,” he says. Two years later,
Fr. Quiroz is the director of vocations
in the Diocese of Laredo. He is also
the director of Casa Guadalupe, the
discernment house for men aspiring
to the priesthood. He is a mentor
for young men and women who are
looking to answer God’s call.
Casa Guadalupe has a similar
structure to the seminary, and helps
aspirants in preparing for their life at
the seminary. “They can experience
community life, studying and serving
the Lord through His people in their
pastoral ministry work. When they are
part of the ministries in the parishes,
they begin to feel the call to how they
can serve,” Fr. Quiroz says. He also
emphasizes that aspirants must be able
to adapt to the environment: “They
need to be open to learn the language,
learn the culture, and be ready to serve
the people.”
Nevertheless, Fr. Quiroz wants to
promote vocations and encourage the
youth to answer God’s call not just to
the priesthood, but to the married,
single or religious life. “We have a
universal call to be holy. The way you

WHY DO WE HAVE PENITENTIAL SEASONS?
Jesus gave the example of a penitential retreat,
spending prayerful time in the desert preparing for
His ministry, reflecting on God’s will and determining how He’d freely make that happen. Penitential
seasons offer us this same opportunity: to withdraw
from our routines and evaluate our spiritual progress
or regression. We do this through reflection and
repentance, which enable us to identify our weaknesses and make reparation to amend our sinful
ways. Penitential seasons create time to reflect on
our need to make God the focal point of our lives.
The result can be spiritually rewarding.

WHY 40 DAYS?
The number 40 has ecclesial significance: Moses
spent 40 days on Mt. Sinai before receiving the Ten
Commandments; Jesus spent 40 days in prayer and
fasting prior to beginning His ministry. So, too, we
spend 40 days preparing to do God’s work.
HISTORY OF LENT: WHAT DID FASTING
USED TO LOOK LIKE?
The Lenten season, preparation for Easter, has
been observed from the onset of the Church,
although there have been inconsistencies with
duration and practices. The Council of Nicea, 325
A.D., established Easter’s fluid date as the Sunday
following the first full moon of the vernal equinox. In
461 A.D., Pope St. Leo established the duration as 40
consecutive days before Easter. Pope Gregory the
Great, in the sixth century, added the dispensing of
ashes the preceding Wednesday (Ash Wednesday),
making Lent 46 days. Sundays were considered feast
days and not included in the count.
Initially, all forms of meat, fish and animal products were excluded for the entirety of Lent. People
were allowed one meal per day, after 3 p.m. In the
1400s, that time was revised to noon. Eventually, a
small snack was included to sustain energy. Over
time, fish, meat and eventually dairy products were
allowed. However, fasting was required all 40 days. It
wasn’t until 1966 that fast days were reduced to Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday only.
¿POR QUÉ TENEMOS TEMPORADAS
PENITENCIALES?
Jesús nos dio el ejemplo de un retiro penitencial
al pasar tiempo orando en el desierto al prepararse

¿POR QUÉ 40 DÍAS?
El número 40 tiene un significado eclesial: Moisés
pasó 40 días en el Monte Sinaí antes de recibir los
10 Mandamientos; Jesús pasó 40 días en oración y

forma, nosotros pasamos 40 días preparándonos

HISTORIA DE LA CUARESMA ¿CÓMO SOLÍAN AYUNAR ANTES?
El tiempo de Cuaresma, en preparación para

WHAT ARE THE CURRENT RULES FOR LENT?
All Catholics, ages 14 and onward, are bound by
the law of abstinence. Abstinence means refraining
from the consumption of meat (land animals) on Ash
Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. Why Friday? To
unite ourselves with Jesus’ sacrifice, made for us on
Good Friday.
All Catholics, ages 18-59, are to fast on Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting is defined as
eating one full, meatless meal on prescribed days.
Bits of food can be taken at other traditional meal
times, though their combined total should not
equal a full meal.
Penitential practices, like fasting and abstinence,
are intended to refocus our thoughts and intentions
toward God. Lent’s 40 days include Ash Wednesday
to Holy Thursday (the Lenten fast continues until Holy
Saturday), not including Sundays. Sundays are optional, but encouraged. For health reasons, the infirm,
ill and pregnant or nursing mothers are exempt.
Three other Lenten disciplines are prayer (daily
conversation with the Lord), fasting (from behaviors which detract from our relationship with God)
and almsgiving (sharing our resources, ensuring the
basic needs of human dignity).
WHY PURPLE?
Colors powerfully convey unspoken messages and
evoke emotions. Scriptural accounts share Jesus
was robed in purple to mock His implied royalty as
king of the Jews. The pain of His Passion and crucifixion became associated with this color. Purple
reminds us Lenten days are times of repentance

desires continue to suppress and crucify the goodness of God today.
WHY DON’T WE SING THE GLORIA
OR SAY ALLELUIA DURING LENT?
The Gloria is a joyful hymn of praise thanking God
and recognizing Jesus as the Lamb of God. The
Alleluia is another exclamation of praise. While we
literally know Jesus has risen and set us free, during Lent, we focus expectant anticipation of these
events to come.
Lent is a time to revisit Old Testament events leading to Christ’s mission and humanity’s salvation. It’s
a time of facing the human struggles impeding our
own resurrection. Refraining from joyous hymns of
exultation maintains Lent’s penitential mood.

¿CUÁLES SON LAS REGLAS DE HOY
EN DÍA PARA LA CUARESMA?
Todos los católicos de las edades de 14-59 años
están obligados por la ley de abstinencia. La
abstinencia implica no consumir carne (animales
terrestres) el Miércoles de Ceniza y todos los
viernes durante la Cuaresma. ¿Por qué el viernes?
Para unirnos al sacrificio de Jesús, el cual él hizo
por nosotros el Viernes Santo.
Todos los católicos de las edades de 18-59 años
deben ayunar el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes
Santo. El ayuno se define como comer una comida
completa que no consista de carne en los días
designados. Pequeños pedazos de comida pueden
ser ingeridos durante las horas normales en que se
hacen otras comidas, pero sin que el total de todos
combinados sea una comida completa.
Prácticas penitenciales, como el ayuno y la
abstinencia, están diseñadas para reenfocar
nuestros pensamientos e intenciones hacia Dios.
Los 40 días de Cuaresma incluyen el Miércoles
de Ceniza hasta el Jueves Santo (el ayuno
cuaresmal continúa hasta el Sábado Santo),
sin incluir los domingos. Los domingos son
opcionales pero recomendados. Por razones de
salud, los discapacitados, enfermos, las mujeres
embarazadas o madres lactantes están exentos.
Otras tres disciplinas cuaresmales son la oración
(conversación diaria con el Señor), ayuno (de
comportamientos que nos alejan de nuestra
relación con Dios), y obras de caridad (compartir

mensajes sin palabras que evocan emociones.
Relatos en las Escrituras cuentan que Jesús vestía
de morado como burla de su supuesta realeza
como rey de los judíos. El dolor de su pasión y
crucifixión se asocia con este color. El morado

El Gloria es un himno alegre de alabanza que
le agradece a Dios y que reconoce que Jesús es
el Cordero de Dios. Aleluya es otra exclamación
de alabanza. Aunque sabemos que literalmente
Jesús ha resucitado y nos ha hecho libres, durante
la Cuaresma, enfocamos nuestra anticipación en
estos eventos por venir.
La Cuaresma es un tiempo para revisitar los
eventos del Antiguo Testamento que llevaron
a la misión de Cristo y hacia la salvación de la
humanidad. Es un tiempo para enfrentar las
luchas humanas mientras esperamos nuestra
propia resurrección. El abstenernos de cantar
himnos alegres de exultación mantiene el ánimo
penitencial de la Cuaresma.
WHAT IS LAETARE SUNDAY?
The Church builds in a break from our deep
reflection and self-denial on the fourth Sunday,
Laetare (meaning “rejoice”) Sunday. A passage
from Isaiah, “rejoice with joy, you that have been
in sorrow,” is read, rose vestments are worn and
flowers may appear. This day is a gift to take a
short break and breath in so we can courageously
resume our walk to Calvary.
WHAT ARE THE SCRUTINIES?
WHY DO THEY HAVE DIFFERENT READINGS?
The scrutinies, celebrated on the third, fourth and
fifth Sundays of Lent, are special rites for the elect
(those preparing for Baptism at Easter Vigil) to
deliver them from the power of sin, protect them
against temptation and strengthen them in Christ.
These rites begin with the entire eucharistic assembly silently praying for these intentions.
The particular readings correlate with the
intended conversion experience of each scrutiny.
The first scrutiny Gospel is the Samaritan woman
(Christ is the living water); the second Gospel
is the man born blind (Christ is the light of the
world); and the third Gospel is the story of Lazarus
(resurrection and life.)
¿QUÉ ES EL DOMINGO DE LAETARE?
La Iglesia ofrece un descanso de nuestra
profunda reflexión y abnegación en el cuarto
domingo, que es el Domingo de Laetare (significa
regocijarse). Un pasaje de Isaías, “Regocíjate con
alegría, tú que has estado en dolor” es leído, se
usan vestimentas rosas y puede haber flores. Este
día es un regalo para tomar un pequeño descanso
e inhalar profundamente y poder continuar
valientemente nuestro camino al Calvario.
¿QUÉ SON LOS ESCRUTINIOS? ¿POR QUÉ TIENEN
DIFERENTES LECTURAS?
Los Escrutinios, celebrados en el tercer, cuarto, y
quinto domingo de Cuaresma, son ritos especiales
para los elegidos (aquellos preparándose para
el bautismo durante la Vigilia Pascual) para
librarlos del poder del pecado, protegerlos contra
la tentación y fortalecerlos en Cristo. Estos ritos
comienzan con la asamblea Eucarística orando
silenciosamente por estas intenciones.
Las lecturas en particular se correlacionan con
la experiencia de conversión destinada para cada
escrutinio. El primer Evangelio de escrutinio habla
de la mujer samaritana (Cristo es el agua viva), el
segundo Evangelio es el hombre que nació ciego
(Cristo es la luz del mundo) y el tercer Evangelio es
la historia de Lázaro (resurrección y vida).

TE PREGUNTA SOBRE POR QUÉ
SER CATÓLICO?
This year, Theology 101 will focus on the topic of
evangelization. Specifically, the task will be to offer some
ways of approaching various questions Catholics may
encounter from co-workers, family and friends regarding
the practice of the faith. Of course, we must remember
that nothing can replace the power of witnessing to
the Good News through our own actions and words,
combined with our willingness to accompany others on
their faith journey.
THE QUESTION: My co-worker told me over
lunch that she was raised Catholic and used to
go to Mass, but gave it up because she found it
boring. She said she wishes she could get out of
it what I do – what can I say to encourage her?
DIGGING DOWN
This is an interesting comment. On the one hand,
this co-worker has given up going to Mass because
it was boring. In other words, she lost interest in
the Mass. On the other hand, she looks at you, who
presumably attends Mass regularly, and sees in you
something that she desires. The question, of course, is
what is it that she finds so desirable in terms of what
she thinks you get out of Mass? So the starting point
is determining what has actually piqued her interest,
rather than focusing on the reasons she found the
Mass boring.

Boredom ultimately involves
problems of engagement. Albert L.
Winseman, in his book Growing an
Engaged Church: How to Stop ‘Doing
Church’ and Start Being the Church Again,
writes that engagement is ultimately
tied to how deeply one feels about
something, a feeling that leads to
commitment. It involves getting and
giving; belonging and growing.
Winseman also identifies indicators
of engagement. Some of these
indicators are knowing what is

expected of us, having spiritual leaders who care about us as people,
having our spiritual needs met and feeling that our participation is
necessary for the mission.
Boredom, or disengagement, can occur when these indicators are in
short supply. This is why it is so important to focus on the spark of desire
expressed in the co-worker’s statement. For example, if it is the peace you
seem to get from the Mass that is attractive to her, to what do you attribute
this peace? It is upon this spark that you can begin to engage your coworker in dialogue, learn about her and, hopefully, grow with her.
Este año, Teología 101 se centrará en el tema de la evangelización.
Específicamente, el objetivo será ofrecer algunas maneras en
que los católicos pueden responder a diversas preguntas que sus

BUSCANDO LA RAZÓN MÁS PROFUNDA
FULL CIRCLE
Your engagement with your co-worker about what it is the co-worker
believes you get out of Mass can provide an opportunity to evangelize, or
share the Good News, about the Mass. Of course, you want to evangelize
in a way that will hopefully lead to the co-worker’s desire to re-engage
with the Mass.
Ideally, the Mass, in the sharing of God’s word and Christ’s body and
blood, builds a community that cares for one another, belongs to one
another and supports the spiritual growth of its members. In other words,
the Mass involves getting and giving; belonging and growing.
FANNING THE FLAME
When someone expresses the desire to get from the Mass
what you get from the Mass, consider the following:
1. Invite them to attend Mass with you.
2.Invite them to a prayer group or a Bible study.
3.Encourage them to explore a Catholics Returning Home
program, and go with them.
4.Create a safe space for them to continue to discuss their
faith journey with you.
Accompaniment and dialogue are keys, as the faith
journey of each person must be respected and honored.
Este es un comentario interesante. Por un lado, esta compañera de
trabajo ha dejado de ir a la Misa porque le es aburrido. En otras palabras,
perdió interés en la Misa. Por otra parte, ella ve en usted, a alguien que
presumiblemente asiste a Misa con regularidad, y ve en usted algo que
ella desea para sí. La pregunta, por supuesto, es ¿qué es lo que ella cree
que usted obtiene de asistir a Misa que considera tan deseable? Así que
el punto de partida es determinar lo que realmente ha despertado su
interés, en lugar de centrarse en las razones por las que encontró la Misa

problemas de compromiso. Albert L. Winseman, en
su libro Growing an Engaged Church (cultivando
una Iglesia comprometida): cómo dejar de ‘venir
a la iglesia’ y comenzar a ser iglesia nuevamente,
escribe que el compromiso está en última instancia
ligado a cuan cercano se siente uno respecto a algo,
un sentimiento que lleva al compromiso. Se trata de
obtener y dar; pertenecer y crecer.
Winseman también identifica indicadores de
compromiso. Algunos de estos indicadores son saber
lo que se espera de nosotros, tener líderes espirituales
que se preocupan por nosotros como personas, tener
nuestras necesidades espirituales satisfechas y sentir
que nuestra participación es necesaria para la misión.
El aburrimiento, o el desenganche, puede ocurrir
cuando estos indicadores son escasos. Por eso es tan
importante centrarse en el deseo expresado en la
pregunta de la compañera de trabajo. Por ejemplo,
si es paz lo que parece obtener usted de la Misa y es
esto lo que le parece a ella atractivo, entonces ¿a qué
atribuye esta paz? Es en base a este deseo que usted
puede iniciar el dialogo con su compañera de trabajo,
aprender acerca de ella y, con suerte, crecer con ella.
COMPLETANDO EL CÍRCULO
El dialogo con su compañera de trabajo acerca de
lo que ella cree que usted recibe de la Misa puede
proporcionar una oportunidad para evangelizar,
o compartir, la Buena Nueva, sobre la Misa. Por
supuesto, usted quiere evangelizar de una manera que
esperamos motive a su compañera de trabajo a volver
a participar en la Misa.
Idealmente, la Misa, al compartir la palabra de Dios
y el cuerpo y la sangre de Cristo, construye una
comunidad en la que se cuidan unos a otros, que
pertenece a todos y apoya el crecimiento espiritual
de sus miembros. En otras palabras, la Misa implica
obtener y dar; pertenecer y crecer.
