Kenton County School District Academic Exposition

Kenton County School District
Academic Exposition
In compliance with the new STEM and STEAM influences in education (Science Technology
Engineering Mathematics / Art) our district would like to move away from the traditional science
fair. The Science Fair is no longer a mandatory project for Kenton County fourth grade
students. The district has chosen to implement an Academic Exposition, instead. As will be
explained further, below, students in all grade levels will have the option to participate in the
exposition, but it will NOT be required at any grade level. In addition, this will no longer be a
judged event. Teachers will approve proposals for their own individual homeroom classes and use
district provided rubrics to assess each project. Teachers from grades 3-5 will determine, as a
group, 12 projects that will move on to be presented at the District Academic Exposition.
In hopes of moving away from tri-fold board projects to real world, hands-on projects; KCSD
presents an opportunity for students to showcase projects, performances, experiments and
abilities based on their unique talents and interests in all subject areas. The Academic Exposition
connects students, parents, business partners and other stakeholders in a multidisciplinary
celebration of the academic interests and talents of KCSD students.
Academic Expositions will connect our schools and the community while generating interest and
excitement in the various academic areas. Proposals can be submitted by students, parents or
any teacher BUT must be directly connected to some content taught during THIS school year.
For example, a student who dances, may perform a folk dance taught in music class or a student who
is science savvy may reproduce an experiment done in class. During the Academic Exposition,
students will display their projects and then have an opportunity for additional experiences (i.e.
engage in science activities at stations manned by students from feeder high schools, marvel at a
chemical demonstration conducted by a local industry partner, learn basic ballet moves from a local
dancer, learn about different types of engineering careers, interact with local authors).
The project may be presented in a variety of ways (but is not limited to):
