Questions & Answers
What is Exede service and where is it available?
Exede is a high-speed Internet access service for homes, home offices and small offices. It is available in
virtually every location across the contiguous United States that has a clear view of the South-Southwest
sky.
Why should I get Exede?
Exede provides access to the Internet at much highter speeds than dial-up access with up to 12 Mbps
download speeds and up to 3 Mbps upload speeds.. A whole new world of content will open up to you
with your broadband connection and with Exede, you get an “always on” connection which means no
dialing-in or other delays to get high-speed access to the Internet.
How hard is it to use?
Not hard at all. Once we professionally install your Exede system, which will take anywhere from 2 to 4
hours (* dependent on provisioning), you are ready to surf the Internet at lightning fast speeds. You can
use your same web-browser, go to the same sites, use your email, etc. just like you always have...but a lot
faster! And it’s always on so no more dialing-in delays, or getting “bumped off”.
What equipment is needed to get the Exede Service?
It’s easy. All you need is Electricity, a Computer, an Exede Mini Dish and an Exede modem. We
recommend that you provide surge protection for this equipment and prevent unnecessary replacements or
expense on your part. Be sure your computer also has the latest virus protection installed prior to our
arrival.
Are there any cancellation fees?
Jump River Electric’s Exede customers are required to sign an *24-month contract when they initiate
service. If you disconnect your service before the 24-months expire, there will be a cancellation fee equal
to the price of your monthly service multiplied by the remaining number of months in your contract.
*Special Offers, Financing, and Seasonal Contracts will require a 36-month contract be signed.
What kind of speed can I expect?
Exede offers the same speed levels for all three packages they offer. You receive up to 12 Mbps
download and up to 3 Mbps upload. Actual speeds may vary and are not guaranteed. Many factors affect
speed.
What is different per package if the speeds are all the same?
Each plan comes with a different data allowance. To ensure that all customers have equal access to the
network and that heavy usage by a small number of customers does not negatively impact the network
performance for all customers, the service utilizes a data allowance policy. Your monthly allowance
starts on the day you are installed with Exede and resets to zero on that same day each month thereafter.
1
What happens if I exceed my data allowance?
You have options if you exceed your data allowance. First, you can purchase additional data at 1
Gigabyte (Gig) increments for an additional $9.99 per Gig through our “Buy More” option. Second, you
can call Jump River Electric Cooperative and we can increase your overall package to the next package
up. This package can be changed back at a future date if your usage needs change. Lastly, you can do
nothing and your speeds and connectivity will be affected, but no overage charge will be assessed. Again,
you will eventually regain these speeds, once you reach the reset date. Please note that members are sent
emails when they reach 70% of the capacity and again at 100% of capacity. These emails also outline
your options. The Data Allowance Policy can be found on the Internet Rates link on our website at
www.jrec.net.
What is Late-Night Free Zone (LNFZ) and Early Bird Free Zone (EBFZ) and how do they work?
The LNFZ and EBFZ allows for "free usage" during off-peak hours. The LNFZ is every night, between
12 a.m. and 5 a.m. (local time) and is part of the Classic Exede packages. The EBFZ is every morning,
between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. and is part of the Evolution Plan packages. Exede will stop metering your data
usage during these times of the day based on which free zone applies to the package you have. Any data
you use during the period that applies to the package you are using will not count against your monthly
data capacity limit. This is a perfect time to schedule uploads or downloads, with the help of a download
manager. Although you can often schedule some downloads like operating system and virus software
updates just using the native software on your devices, download managers can allow users to schedule
other types of uploads/downloads, including:
 Photo/video backups to online, cloud-based storage
 Movie or music downloads
 Large data files for work and office purposes
Although Exede does not officially sanction any specific download manager, here are a few download managers that
are already popular among subscribers:

How do I know which of the three plans will best fit my needs?
The Evolution plans help tackle data caps by giving you unlimited access to what you do the most online:
view web pages and manage your email. You’ll still have a sizeable data allowance of 5 GB or 15 GB
per month for video and file downloads and uploads. Even if you go over that, your access to web pages
and email will not be restricted. Here are just a few examples of what you’ll be able to do with unlimited
access to web pages and email:
 Check your Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ news feed
 Manage your bank account or stock portfolio
 Read news and magazine articles and pictorials
 Write a blog article, post comments, and engage in forums
 Buy and sell on your favorite online stores.
2
Streaming media like online videos and music are sometimes found embedded within certain websites. If
you go over your data allowance, these items will be restricted from playing on those web pages.
However, you’ll find that the rest of the web page functions as you’d expect. Streaming video and
music is metered and goes towards your 5 GB or 15 GB allowance.
Please refer to the below chart for a sample internet activity for three of our Classic Exede plans.

Where can I get Exede?
“JUMP RIVER ELECTRIC” is selling Exede Satellite Speed Internet. Please contact Denise at the
Ladysmith Office (715-532-5524) or Sheila at the Hayward Office (715-634-4575).
Can I get Exede service in a mobile vehicle like an RV or a boat?
Not at this time. Exede service was designed for stationary locations like homes and small businesses. We
do not offer broadband service for mobile vehicles at this time.
Installation Information:
What is the installation process like? Can I install my own dish?
Certified Exede professional installers efficiently install equipment and activate Exede’s broadband
service at your chosen location. The 28” satellite mini dish can be easily mounted on a roof or on a *pole.
A cable from the dish connects to a satellite modem (a small box usually placed next to the computer),
3
which connects to your computer via an Ethernet connection. Installation requires a Certified Exede
installation professional to make sure that the dish is pointed at the satellite accurately and to verify that
all connections are made properly. Self –installation is not offered.
*Please note that pole mounts are not part of the free installation and all cost are paid to the installer at the day of
install. Quotes can be given upon request.
Can I use wireless home networking with Exede?
Yes. Exede is compatible with all major wireless home networking products.
Do I have to have a phone line in addition to the satellite connection?
No. Exede offers an efficient 2-way broadband connection that requires no phone lines.
Do I need a southern line of sight to receive a signal from your satellite?
Yes. You will need a clear view of the southern sky to receive a signal from the Exede satellite.
Technical Information:
How fast is this service? How does it compare to cable modems and DSL?
Exede’s always-on broadband Internet connection provides a user experience similar to most DSL and
cable modem services. We offer download speeds of up to 12 Mbps. Exede’s high bandwidth opens up a
window to a world of rich content that is largely unavailable through dial-up modems. Actual speeds may
vary and are not guaranteed. Many factors affect speed.
What are my minimum computer system requirements to get Exede?
Most computers in use today will meet our minimum system requirements.
PC/ Windows: XP, Vista or 7 operating systems
Macintosh: OS10.4 or higher operating systems
Both should have 300 Mhz or faster processing speed, 128 MB Random Access Memory (RAM)
And OS 10.2 or higher operating system. 100 MB of hard drive space and an Ethernet card are required.
Will Exede work with Macintosh computers?
Yes. The Exede service is compatible with Macintosh computers.
Will I be able to use a virtual private network (VPN) with the Exede service?
Exede does not support VPN’s due to the effects of latency.
What is the impact of latency? Can I play real-time Internet games or make Internet phone calls on
your service?
The Exede system is engineered to help offset the impact of latency, which is the delay caused by sending
signals from the earth to the satellite and back again. However, there is a delay of about a half second as
the signal travels up to the satellite, back down to the gateway, up to the satellite and back down to your
modem. For most applications this latency does not affect performance, however, there are some
applications like voice over IP (telephone service delivered over the Internet, also known as VoIP) or real
time interactive gaming, where latency will have an effect on performance over the Exede network, as it
would on any satellite- delivered service.
Does Exede support VoIP?
At this time Exede does not advertise support for VoIP.
What if my computer did not come with a Network Interface Card (NIC)? What can I do?
Many computers can be upgraded with a 10/100 Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC), which you can
find at almost any consumer electronics store, or at an online store. If you are comfortable with opening
your computer and installing hardware, most Ethernet NICs can be self installed. Otherwise you may
4
want to hire a computer professional. Check with your computer manufacturer for more information on
the right Ethernet NIC for your system.
Also, if you have an available USB port on your computer, you can purchase a USB Ethernet adapter
(available at almost any consumer electronics store, or online). This may be easier to install than a PCI
card in your computer. For a laptop, you can purchase a standard PCMCIA card that provides an Ethernet
connection, or you can purchase a USB Ethernet adapter as well. We recommend that you upgrade your
computer to get the most out of your Internet experience.
Is Exede service affected by weather?
The Exede service is only minimally affected by weather, and only under extreme conditions. The Exede
service will offer availability equal to that of satellite TV. Like Satellite TV services during a very heavy
rainstorm, you may notice slower Exede speeds, but this should normally only last a few minutes.
Who do I call if I have a problem once I have Exede?
You just call the friendly customer care agents at 1-888-817-0951. They will answer JUMP RIVER
ELECTRIC and will assist you with your question or problem. This tech support number is staffed 24
hours a day, 7 days a week. A maintenance plan agreement is also made available, at time of installation,
to help cover any future expenses associated with equipment failure. A complete copy of this plan can be
found on the Internet Rates page of www.jrec.net.
