Phenolphthalein

COST of the Group 1 and Group 2 Elements:
GROUP 1
GROUP 2
Li $0.66/g
Be $5.30/g
Na $0.07/ g
Mg $0.04/g
K $0.09/g
Ca $0.11/g
Rb $25.00/g
Sr $0.17/g (cheap but too reactive)
FYI : There are 28.3 grams/ ounce.
Why does the reaction happen?
FOR ALL GROUP 1 METALS :
FOR ALL GROUP 2 METALS:
2Li + 2H2O  2LiOH + H2
Mg + 2H2O  Mg(OH)2
+ H2
1-
Compounds that end with the hydroxide group (OH ) are bases. The metal cancels out the negative
charge on the ion when the reaction occurs.
Phenolphthalein
Why does phenolphthalein turn pink?
Phenolphthalein is a weak organic acid that turns pink in a basic solution because of the removal by the
base (from the reaction) of a hydrogen ion (H+). When this ion is removed the molecule changes shape.
When molecules change shape it causes light to reflect differently from the molecule, thus creating a
color or color change.
This is the clear form of phenolpthalein (in acid).
In a base the structure becomes flatter.
This causes a change in color to the red form.
