The History of
Hunter’s Yard
Hunter’s Yard is situated in its own
dyke off Womack Water in Ludham.
The two boat sheds are largely as
they were built in the 1930s from
timber in the traditional Broads
style with the majority of original
features intact and numerous pieces
of equipment, tools and boat fittings
on view.
Percy Hunter (pictured right), with
his two sons Cyril and Stanley, built
the first shed in 1932 and by that
summer they had designed, built
and launched the first two cabin
yachts of the Fleet. The Fleet grew
each year and a second shed was
built in 1935 before the outbreak of
the war to help house the 14 yachts
in the winter months. The last 2
cabin yachts were completed after
the war in the late 1940s.

Youth Sailing
Are you or do you know of a youth group or school with youngsters in need
of a change of outdoor activity? Why not bring them sailing?
Friends of the
Hunter Fleet
The Friends of the Hunter Fleet was
founded in 1996 to maintain a
continuing link with the many people
who made donations in order to set
up the Trust, to act as a “User Group”
for the Hirers of the yachts and to
help the work of the Trust.
We believe the education youngsters can get from working with ‘Mother
Nature’ and each other can be a ‘life changing’ experience.
They can learn:
This in turn can help them to:
• discipline
• take responsibility for self and
• tolerance
others
• team work
• problem solve
• how to understand the elements
• increase their self-confidence
Why not get your youngsters sailing with Hunter’s as part of your outdoor
activity programme?
The Trust offers a 30% discount on cabin yacht and half decker hire for all
organised youth groups and schools. (Pillows and blankets included in this package)
Need experienced Skippers?
Can’t find enough eperienced skippers for your group? We can put the
organiser in touch with experienced sailors who are willing to help as part of
their support of the Hunter Fleet.

membership of over 800 families who
are very much a part of the Hunter’s
Yard environment. They help to
provide practical and financial
support to strengthen the aims of
the Trust in terms of preserving the
Fleet; maintaining the traditional
skills of wooden boat building and
encouraging youth sailing.
The nominal annual membership
fee is a minimum of only £15 and
helps to cover the cost of Newsletters
as well as contributing towards
donations to the Trust. These
donations are used on items for the
Fleet, not general running costs, and
it makes a very real difference.
Your membership fee offers you:
• Two social events at the Yard
each year with free sailings for
members
• A professionally produced
newsletter three times a year
• A 10% discount on boat hire
during Friends’ weeks
By joining ‘The Friends’ you would
be:
• Assisting with the preservation
and maintenance of the Yard and
Fleet
• Supporting the continued use of
the Fleet by schools and youth
groups
• Helping ensure the craft will
continue to be here for everyone
to sail
• Helping to preserve a small piece
of local history
We’re always looking for new ‘Friends’ so if you’re not a member yet,

Booking Terms
All boats are let on an unattended basis. It is the Hirer’s
responsibility to ensure the skipper and crew are experienced enough to handle the yacht and are not sailing
under the influence of alcohol/drugs. The booking
accepted on the understanding that the yacht is placed
at the disposal of the Hirer on the specified date unless
the company is prevented from doing so by circumstances beyond its control, in which case the whole of
the hire fee will be returned, but the Hirer will have no
claim on the Company. Advance booking for ‘extras’
is advisable. Extra gear includes all the items needed
to board an additional person on the yacht, including
mattresses, bedding and all utensils.
Vechiles are parked on the premises at owner’s risk.
Pets
Pets are welcomed at a charge of £30. If you wish
to bring your dog please inform us at the time of
booking.
Boarding times
Saturday hirers can arrive between 2pm-4pm. For
short breaks we will endeavour to have the boat
available by approximately 11am. You are welcome
to enquire the previous week if you require an earlier
start time. If you are likely to arrive after 3pm on your
start date please inform the staff in advance. There
will be a charge of £20 per boat per hour to cover staff
overtime if you arrive after 4 pm (this may be waived
at the discretion of the manager).
Please help our staff by ensuring the yacht is cleared
not later than 9am on your date of departure. A
surcharge of £15 per hour or part thereof is payable
after this time.
