An Important Partnership: Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy
Pregnancy is definitely exciting,
but it can also be the source of
great anxiety. This is especially the
case for woman who are
experiencing their first pregnancy.
At Gynprag we want to make sure
our patients have the best possible
care and a healthy pregnancy.
We’d like to outline some things an
expectant mother can do to help
ensure a healthy and low stress
pregnancy.
Trying to Conceive:
•Visit your doctor. A routine
check-up will help pinpoint areas
where lifestyle changes could
increase your chances of
conceiving.
•Make some changes. If you
are a smoker or heavy drinker,
now it the time to stop. If you need

Pregnancy puts an enormous strain
on a woman’s body. Beginning
your pregnancy at a healthy
weight will reduce the chances of
later complications.

•Take care of your teeth. You
may notice your gums bleed a lot
during pregnancy. Now is the time
to get your teeth cleaned and
cared for.
•Improve your diet. Try to fill
your body with good-for-you
foods. Also, you’ll want to cut
down on caffeine and limit fish
intake, especially those high in
mercury (like albacore tuna.) Opt
for shrimp, catfish, or salmon.
•Begin take folic acid and
prenatal vitamins at least one
month before trying to conceive.
The First Trimester:
•More than likely, you are
going to feel exhausted, as your
body is working hard to build and
maintain the placenta. Napping
and getting as much rest as you
can will help.
•It is important to eliminate
alcohol, smoking, and extreme
temperatures (hot tub, sauna, sun
beds, etc.) as the developing
embryo is quite sensitive to its
environment.
•It’s also time to give up
extreme sports which risk injury,
including skiing, roller-skating,
climbing, etc.)
•Begin or continue to take a
daily multi-vitamin which includes
folic acid.
•If morning sickness (which can
actually last ALL DAY) has you
down, try eating small, bland
meals throughout the day.
•If you are vomiting more than
four times a day, vomiting blood,
or unable to keep fluids down for
more than a day, call your
physician.

upset stomachs.
Tips for a Healthy
Pregnancy (cont.)
The Second Trimester:
•Now that your energy has
returned, it’s time to get moving.
Unless you have health problems,
moderate exercise is safe during
pregnancy and can even assist
with reducing the chances of
gestational diabetes.
•If your doctor gives you the
okay, sex is perfectly safe during
the pregnancy.
•Your skin can undergo some
interesting changes during
pregnancy. Most of these changes
(the dark spots, stretch marks, and
linea nigra) will fade after
pregnancy. The lotions and
cremes that promise to prevent or
get rid of stretch marks have no
real proven ability to work, but
are useful in helping with dry,
itchy skin.
•Ask your physician for a list of
over-the-counter medications that
are considered safe during
pregnancy.
•If you experience any unusual
uterine activity, it is important to
contact your physician. Often,
magnesium will be given to reduce
risk of preterm labor.
The Third Trimester:
•Your physician will closely
monitor the baby’s growth during
this trimester. If they are
concerned, additional ultrasounds
will be likely.
•One way to prepare your
body for the upcoming delivery is
to do your kegels. Aim for three
sets of 10 a few times per week
throughout the trimester, and
continue them in the postpartum
period.
•Breathing difficulties and
fatigue will slow you down this
trimester. Also, you may develop
varicose veins and hemorrhoids as
the baby continues to grow and
push down on your pelvis.
•Know the signs of
preeclampsia. This dangerous
condition can result in a sudden,
rapid weight gain after the 20
week mark, facial or hand
swelling, and sometimes it is
accompanied by a headache. Call
your physician immediately if you
experience these symptoms.
•Also, call your doctor if you
haven’t felt the baby move in 24
hours, or you begin bleeding
vaginally.
3. Broccoli
Rich in calcium and folate, this super
veggie is loaded with vitamin C.
Combine it with an iron rich food like
brown rice to up the health benefits.
4. Milk
Each 8 oz. glass of milk provides 30
percent of your daily calcium
allowance. Switch to skim to cut the
calories and keeping the calcium.
5. Lean Meat
Your daily iron needs double during
pregnancy. Including iron rich foods
such as lean meat will help fight
fatigue as well as meet your iron
needs.
6. Eggs
If you feel averse to meat during
pregnancy, try eggs for a protein rich
substitute.
7. Leafy Greens
Rich in iron and folate, leafy greens
also are an excellent source of
calcium.
8. Oatmel
This complex carb is easy on upset
stomachs and can add some
beneficial fiber to your diet.
9. Oranges
Of course you know it’s a great
source of vitamin C, but it is also an
easy way to meet your daily fluid
requirements.
10. Whole Wheat Bread
Besides a good share of iron and
zinc, whole grain bread is a great
way to add additional fiber.

“Don’t Try to be Superwoman”: A Twin Story
With a one and a half year old at
home, Alison (not her real name)
was in for quite a surprise when she
went to the doctor for her eight
week appointment. During the
routine examination, Alison
discovered that she was carrying
not one, but two babies.
“We were very excited and so thrilled to tell our family. Especially my
dad, since he is also a twin.”
Alison choose to see a perinatologist (an obstetrician who specializes
in high-risk pregnancies) so she could be seen more often, and receive
additional sonograms. Of course, as any expectant mother, Alison loved
seeing her twins on the screen. “My doctor gave me CD's of every one of
my sonograms. I have tons!”
Naturally, as with any pregnancy, it was a strain on Alison’s body,
especially under the circumstances. “The first trimester was difficult for me. I
was extremely tired and nauseated. The second trimester was actually
pleasant, but by the third I was miserable. The heart burn was horrible and
trying to get comfortable and get a good night's sleep was impossible.”
Close to 60 percent of all twin births occur prematurely (before 37
weeks.) However, Alison not only exceeded expectations, she delivered
two large and healthy babies. “I had a planned C-section just because my
first pregnancy was a c-section as well. Even though my pregnancy was
healthy my doctor did not want to chance any complications during
delivery. I was never placed on bed rest and carried the babies until 38
weeks! Twin A was 6 pounds 7 ounces (2.92 kg) and Twin B was 7 pounds
7 ounces (3.37kg)! Healthy and big!”
In retrospect, Alison has very little she would change about the
experience. “For me it was more uncomfortable carrying twins, for obvious
reasons, but there is nothing I would have done differently.”
Postpartum, however, Alison does have some words of advice for
women who find themselves pregnant with multiples. “Make sure you have
plenty of help after the babies arrive. Try not to be superwoman and do
everything by yourself. Let others help with chores and errands that you
may need done. It's also important to make time for yourself.”
And just one last bit of important advice from this busy mom: “Keep the
twins on the same feeding schedule. When one wakes up to eat, they both
eat!”
