Complete repair service available. Drop off a tool for repair and rent a replacement tool at the same time. 1 Rental Department Benefits of Rental 1. Maintenance 6. Inventory Control Equipment rented on a day-to-day basis includes full maintenance. The user needs no repair shop, no spare parts supply, no mechanics, and no parts supply inventory or maintenance records. Another advantage in renting is better inventory control. Contractors have less inventory loss due to theft when equipment is rented. The presence of continuous billing on any rented item tends to establish accountability for that item. Equipment signed for at an equipment rental business which must ultimately be returned is watched with sharper eyes. 2. Breakdown Costs related to breakdowns of owned equipment are not applicable to rented equipment. When rented equipment breaks down, it is replaced by the equipment rental business at no cost to the user. Time loss on breakdown of owned equipment as well as the cost of repairs must be considered. 3. Warehousing Warehousing facilities are seldom needed for rental equipment. Renting makes it possible for contractors to operate with less overhead. 4. Mobility Equipment rental offers the contractor or customer mobility that does not exist with owned equipment. A contractor can bid on a job several hundred miles away based on renting equipment needed near the jobsite. Availability and convenience have become one of the strongest arguments against ownership. 5. Cost Control Better cost control is possible with rented equipment. Knowing the true costs of owned equipment is difficult. Rented equipment offers one accountable cost figure—that shown on the rental invoice. 2 7. Disposal Costs It costs money to sell used or obsolete equipment. Preparing equipment for resale, advertising and selling time are cost factors of ownership. 8. Obsolescence Day-to-day renting eliminates obsolescence. Ownership risks being handicapped with slow, unwieldy equipment. An equipment rental business provides the latest types and models of equipment. 9. Correct Equipment for the Job Ownership forces another kind of inefficiency through use of the wrong size or type of equipment for a given job, even though the equipment is not obsolete. This can mean additional, though hidden, costs. Rental insures the correct equipment for the job. 10.Minimum Equipment for the Job Equipment ownership becomes particularly expensive when the equipment is idle. When ownership of basic equipment is combined with rental; as needed, idle time is minimized. 11. Personal Property Taxes and Licenses There are no personal property taxes or license costs for rented equipment. Ownership incurs these substantial costs. 12. Conservation of Capital Renting conserves and frees capital for other, potentially more profitable uses. 13. Increases Borrowing Capacity The equipment user who rents rather than buys finds borrowing easier because they have a better ratio of assets to liabilities. Since the equipment does not appear as a liability on his balance sheet, the normal line for bank credit is not disturbed. This can be important in securing construction bonds. These points should be considered in analyzing the cost of ownership. To compare the cost of renting with the bare purchase price is unrealistic. Since the equipment rental industry has become a strong phenomena in our economy, many business people understand and utilize it. Prolonged sun exposure will degrade lifting capacity Nylon slings should not be used at temperatures above 180° F. Use Proper Hitch for Balance and Control: • Choker Hitch — For a nonslip hitch, wrap the sling one turn around the load before choking the sling. • Basket Hitch — Slings used in a basket hitch should have the load balanced to prevent load slippage from the sling. If practical, wrap the sling one turn around the load to grip the load firmly. Consider Sling Angle and Compensate Accordingly (see below) • • • • • • • • Slings should not be twisted, tied into knots or joined by knotting Continually inspect for damage, wear and misuse. Each sling should be visually inspected for obvious defects, flaws or wear each time it is used by the person handling it. Do not exceed rated capacity of the sling Slings used in basket hitch should have load balanced to prevent slippage Avoid crushing of sling. Do not crush sling between load or other surface Use corner guards when sling may come in contact with sharp edges Take up slack slowly to avoid shock loading the sling RIGGING Lifting Angles Reduce the Capacity of All Slings Sling Angle Table (Angle of Lift) Angle/degreesLossAngle/degreesLoss Horizontal Factor Horizontal Factor 90 85 80 1.000 0.996 0.985 55 50 45 0.819 0.766 0.707 75 0.966 40 0.643 70 0.940 35 0.574 65 0.906 30 0.500 60 0.866 These are some general safety suggestions. Always contact the manufacturer for specific operating instructions. When selecting a sling to carry a given load, it is important to consider the angle at which the sling will be used. As the angle increases, the load to which the sling is subjected increases substantially. Please use the below example and the chart to determine your capacity when lifting with angles: Example: You have two 1", 2 ply endless slings with 3200 lb vertical ratings. Also, inspect all slings periodically depending on frequency of use, severity of service conditions, and experience gained from the life of slings in similar applications. Written documented inspections recommended to be performed at least annually. (See ASME B30.9-199 - Slings Section 9 - 5.6) Remove sling from service if it has: 1. acid/caustic burns 5. excessive abrasive wear 2. melting or charring of any part 6. knots in any part 3. holes, tears, cuts, or snags 7. excessive pitting or corrosion or cracked, distorted, or broken fittings 4. broken or worn stitching in load bearing splices 8. other visible damage Repair: 1. Never repair sling webbing with structural damage. 2. Any slings utilizing hardware may be rewebbed with existing fittings. The manufacturer must determine if hardware is reusable. 3. Any rewebbed sling must be proof tested to twice the vertical rated capacity before being put back into service. A certificate of proof testing shall be provided. 4. Temporary repairs of webbing, fittings, or stitching shall not be permitted. Warning: Working load limits apply only to new and unused slings. 21 How to Order Slings All you need to do is put this information into the correct order. Normal operating temperature range is -40° F to 400° F. Chain sling links and legs should not be twisted or kinked. Chemically active environments can reduce chain capacity. Avoid dragging sling over abrasive surfaces. Never side load, back load or tip load a hook. Never rig a sling with an angle less than 30° to horizontal. Inspection & Repair • • • • • • A visual inspection shall be performed by a designated person prior to use, or daily. A complete inspection of the chain sling must be performed annually when slings are used for normal service. More frequent inspections may be required when slings are used for severe service. Written records must be kept. Slings must be taken out of service if they are missing tags. Sling repair should only be completed by the sling manufacturer or other qualified person. A material handling system within a building consisting of a hoist which moves laterally on a beam or bridge which, in turn, moves longitudinally on a runway made of beams and rails. Loads can be moved to any point within the area bounded by the bridge span and runway beams. Overhead bridge cranes come in four basic configurations: • Top Running. The crane bridge travels on top of rails mounted on a runway beam supported by either the building columns or columns specifically engineered for the crane. • Under Running. The crane bridge travels on the bottom flange of the runway beam which is usually supported by the roof structure. • Single Girder. The crane consists of two end trucks, a single bridge girder and the trolley hoist unit. The trolley runs on the bottom flange of the bridge girder. crane & hoist Bridge Cranes • Double Girder. The crane consists of two end trucks, two bridge cranes and the trolley hoist unit. The trolley runs on rails on top of the bridge girders. 33 Crane & Hoist Jib Cranes Jib cranes are an inexpensive alternative to overhead bridge cranes and are more versatile in more applications than bridge cranes or stationary mounted hoists. Most often they are used for coverage over a single welding, assembly or machining work station. We can provide you a complete jib crane system including the jib, hoist, installation, start up and testing. The basic jib crane types are: • Free Standing/Floor Mounted. Perfect underneath bridge cranes, in open areas where they can serve several work stations, in outdoor applications such as loading docks or in machining and assembly operations where they can be overlapped with other jib cranes to provide staged coverage. Standard capacities from 500 to 10,000 lbs, with spans up to 20ft. Special orders also available. • Wall Mounted Full Cantilever. These cranes provide hoist coverage and 200° rotation for individual use in bays, along walls, or columns of plants, or as a supplement to an overhead crane system. Full cantilevered job cranes have the advantage of providing maximum lift for the hoist, since it can be installed very close to the underside of the lowest obstruction. It is composed of a vertical mast mounted to two brackets on a wall or vertical building beam with a boom that cantilevers out, perpendicular from the wall to the top. Standard capacities from 1/4 ton to 5 tons and spans up to 20ft. Special orders also available. • Wall Mounted Tie Rod Jib Crane. These cranes are the most economical means of providing hoist coverage for individual use in bays, along walls or columns of plants, or as a supplement to an overhead 34 crane system. This jib has two brackets that mount to a wall or building beam. The bottom bracket has a boom that is perpendicular to the wall with a bracket toward the end that a tie rod is attached to. This is typically the least expensive jib, but it takes up the most head room and it exerts the most force on whatever it’s mounted to. Standard capacities are form 1/2 ton to 5 ton with spans up to 20ft. Special orders also available. • Articulating Jib Crane. These cranes offer a material handling solution for applications moving around beams, corners, reaching under or into machinery. Articulating jibs can be floor, wall, ceiling or bridge crane mounted to best suit your application. Standard capacities are 150 to 2,000 lbs with spans up to 16ft. Special orders also available. Monorail Cranes With a monorail system, the hoist and trolley run on a single stationary beam. Monorail systems are an effective method of moving and positioning loads to specific locations. Monorails are commonly used for repetitive jobs, such as paint booths or water treatment plants in maintenance applications. The monorail allows two axes of hook movement: up/down and north/south along the monorail beam. There is no lateral motion under a monorail beam. We can design the monorail hoist support structure, including beams and hangers. Gantry Cranes Gantry cranes can be a practical solution when your building will not support a bridge crane, when you only need a crane intermittently or when you need a portable solution. Gantry cranes can come in many different sizes. They can be small enough to be disassembled and put in the back of a truck for transportation to another site or be a permanently installed crane that runs on tracks with capacities of over 25 tones. Smaller gantry cranes can be adjustable in height and span making them very versatile. In addition, they can be mounted on casters or built to run on tracks in the floor. Some gantry cranes are even built from aluminum. Stand sizes we manufacture are over 5 tons and a span greater then 30ft. Special orders also available. We can replace and repair defective rigging because we manufacture our own rigging! How Often Are Crane Inspections Required? Crane & Hoist Please note that this section does not cover all possible situations where OSHA may require a crane to be inspected. It is intended to be a general guideline. Daily The operator is required to perform a simple inspection daily or prior to each shift for plants running multiple shifts. The person performing the inspection must be trained how to conduct the inspection and what to look and listen for. This inspection is not required to be documented. Monthly Each month you are required to do a hook and wire rope/chain inspection, the person performing the inspection must be trained on how to perform the inspection. Hook and wire rope inspections must be documented. Periodically (1-12 months) Depending on usage you are required to do a complete, or what most crane inspection companies call an "annual" inspection of the crane. The person performing the inspection must be trained on how to perform the inspection. Periodic inspections must be documented. In most cases performing the periodic inspection annually is sufficient. Markets Served We serve the entire states of Minnesota and Wisconsin.
