November 2016 - Oak Lodge Primary School

OAK LODGE PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
As the end of term approaches, the corridors are often filled with the sounds
of children merrily rehearsing Christmas songs and Christmas preparations
are well under way. I look forward to welcoming you to see these performances. The retiring collection will be for Maypole Project, a charity providing
emotional support to children with chronic illnesses and their families.
We have had a very charitable month, with a huge pile of boxes sent off to the
Love-in-a-Box scheme, followed by a very successful Children in Need day
which raised £1270 - thank you so much for all your support with these
events.
Thank you to parents for attending the recent Parent’s Evening and I hope you
found your meeting informative and helpful. Thanks also to everyone who
completed the parent questionnaires recently, as these provide us with really
important feedback to help the school continue to develop and improve.
I hope you will be joining us at the FSA Christmas Fair on Saturday 3rd December.
Mr Apsley, Headteacher
READING AT HOME
As mentioned in a recent letter to Early Years and Key Stage 1, please can I
remind parents/carers to ensure that children are heard to read at least three
times per week. After each occasion that your child is heard to read, we ask
that the reading record book is signed and dated with a comment about their
reading that you feel is appropriate. Thank you for your support with this.

ANTI-BULLYING SHOW
On 9th November, Key Stage 1 & 2 children watched a thought-provoking
anti-bullying show, with actors acting out a range of practical scenarios for
the children to consider. The production was presented as if the audience
were the bystanders witnessing the bullying and they were prompted to
consider how they should react.
As part of this, the children have all taken an oath promising not to bully
others, not to stand by while others are bullied and to report bullying
whenever they see it. All children will sign a plaque which will then be
displayed in the school as a permanent reminder of their promise.
We asked some of the children what they thought of the performance...
Days off
School
“It was really good. It taught bullies to be good people.” Blake,
Year 5
“It gave us a better understanding of bullying.” Alyssa, Year 6
“It was good that it included the audience.” Eve, Year 6
Well done to Nicole Wilkinson who
decided to have her long hair cut and
donated this to the Little Princess
Trust. The charity provides real hair
wigs to boys and girls across the UK
and Ireland, that have sadly lost their
own hair through cancer treatment.

“Why would anyone want to be a bully?” Avy, Year 2
“I learnt that bullies need to learn that they can’t always win and
they won’t always get their way - it’s not nice to be mean. We need
to look after each other. Watching the bully and not doing anything
is just as bad as bullying itself.” Thalia, Year 2

If children are not regularly
attending school, they cannot
learn and evidence shows a strong
link between attendance and
children progressing and reaching
their full potential.
A big well done to Annabel Longhurst
Woods who held a cake sale for Hope
Health Action. She raised a fantastic
£130 and kindly donated £15.00 from
this to Children in Need. The remainder Below you will see the recent

Congratulations also to Fred Bentley who decided he wanted
to raise money for Demelza, Hospice Care for Children.
Having made the decision, he organised a sponsored goal

SCHOOL SECURITY
In the interest of security, we politely ask parents to refrain from entering
the building before or after school. For security reasons, we can not have
unaccompanied adults walking around school, for example looking for
lost property, changing reading books etc. If you need help, please speak
to your child’s teacher. Anyone needing to enter the building should
please come in via the office, sign in, and wear a visitor’s badge. Thank
you.
FRUIT SNACKS
Children in Years 3-6 are asked to bring in a
morning snack to have at break time which
should be a piece of fruit or vegetables. This
snack must only be a real piece of fruit!

SPORT REPORTS
Girls Football Tournament
On Thursday 20th October 2016 the Girls Football Team went to a tournament. The following girls were invited to
go: Olivia, Sophie, Elizabeth, Lucia, Mia, Keira, Scarlett and Michelle. As our captain and vice captain were away
on a school trip the captain for the day was Elizabeth.
There were 21 schools but there was not enough time to play all of the schools so we only played 6 matches. For
the tournament Michelle was our goal keeper until the last match where Sophie played in goal. The defenders were
Olivia, Keira and Sophie whilst the girls who were placed in midfield and upfront were Mia, Elizabeth, Scarlett and
Lucia.
Even though we didn’t win the tournament we all still tried our best. We may not have got through to the finals
but now we know what we are up against next time. Everybody really enjoyed the day and that’s not just because
we were able to miss part of school! We all worked very well as a team and without our temporary captain for the
day we wouldn’t have done as well.
Olivia Grant
Boys Football Tournament
On 26th October the Oak Lodge football team played a tournament at the Kent County Cricket Club. When we
arrived we had to warm up. The rules were explained and then we kicked off playing the first game. We won 2-0
and Jake scored both of the goals as he was playing the striker. We had to wait for half an hour after every game
to let the other teams play. The whistle went and the next game started. It was pretty close, but then Morgan
scored to put us 1-0 up. Then straight after, Edward scored and that game ended 2-0. The next match was against
the hardest team in our group, Stuart Fleming. In this match Jamie (our goal keeper) had his first touch as they
went through and had a shot. But seconds later we scored 2 and got to win! Our next game was 5-0 and we
dominated the list of scorers. We were all happy because we didn’t concede one goal and did not lose one game which was amazing! We went home well deserved winners of our group.

High 5 Netball Finals
On Tuesday 9th November the Oak Lodge A team went to the High Five
tournament final, which was held at Harris Academy in Beckenham. As soon as
we arrived we were able to start preparing, shooting and passing. Altogether
there were eight schools competing for the chance to represent Bromley in the
London Youth Games in March 2017. Each school played seven games which
were six minutes each. The A team, captained by Sophie Placek managed to come
6th in the borough. Overall it was an enjoyable time and everyone went home
happy!

Squash Festival
On Tuesday 15th November, there was a Year 4 Squash festival. Oak Lodge
took two teams. In the A team were: Zac, Chloe, Ibrahim, Eden, Mia and our
capital, Dilen. In the B team were: Oscar, Charlie, Kitty, Nymah and our
captain, James. We played seven teams at squash and squicket (which is a
mix of cricket and squash). The A team won the tournament and the B team
came in third place.
The whole day was really fun, we enjoyed the sport and we think that this
sport should come to this and every school in the future!
