MacAllister Building
Phase 1
T
he building, 1,300 sq ft, meets the Valley’s essential needs, housing 15 cats and 9-11 dogs.
GVAWL rescues an average of 110 companion animals each year, a number that will increase
with shelter opening. The building also serves the City of Gunnison as its animal impound.

Miya Must found time in her very active life to volunteer with
GVAWL, and gave many hours of her energy and boundless love
to further its mission. After Miya died in 2007, her family
established Miya’s Memorial Fund to assist in building the
Shelter and Adoption Center. The fund will build the outdoor
exercise area for dogs, which will bear not only Miya’s name,
but the names of her beloved dogs, Henley and Billy, shown here.

Your New Animal Shelter
Q:
A:
A:
This is not “Your Grandma’s dog Pound”!
it is a highly specialized building.
Why?
it’s not a residence; it is a public building.
A facility that houses 15 or more animals must meet State and other requirements that
are in place for the well-being of both the animals and the humans who will care for
them. The ventilation system alone rivals that of a hospital!
Other requirements among many:
• Specified minimum amount of space per animal
• Separate dog and cat areas
• Specialty surfaces on floors, walls, and ceilings to allow for disinfecting
• One isolation area for dogs and one for cats, with separate ventilation systems
• High-capacity sewer system, and many, many drains
