RIO MESA HIGH SCHOOL SPARTAN UPDATE January 15, 2016 COMMUNITY LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY FOR YOUNG ADULTS GRADUATION took place on Friday, January 8, 4 p.m., at the Oxnard Union High School District Board Room. Congratulations Academy Graduate from Rio Mesa High School – Jacqueline Alvarez! The Academy was established in March 1999 as a partnership between the Oxnard Police Department and the Oxnard Union High School District. The 60hour program is designed to provide youth with an insight to the law enforcement profession. Upon successful completion of the program, students earn high school credits. NFL GOLDEN FOOTBALL - In conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the Super Bowl, the NFL has sent a Golden Football to each high school in America boasting a Super Bowl participant. Rio Mesa is the only OUHSD school to receive one, honoring 1998 graduate SCOTT FUJITA, who played in Super Bowl XLIV while a member of the New Orleans Saints. We will be extremely proud to give the ball a permanent home in our trophy case! Pictured is the Intermediate class working on their "Basic Electrical Lab #1". The students are constructing working electrical circuits and testing voltages at specific points on their circuit. Business - Microsoft Office Intro students are learning how Excel is used in a payroll department by calculating pay rates and overtime pay. Multimedia is in a unit on Typography (pictured is a text effect students made in Adobe Illustrator)…Mary Wayne, Career and Technical Education Department Chair ENGLISH - The IB Seniors in English will be participating in their Individual Oral Commentaries (IOCs) for the next two weeks. The IOCs are part of the testing regimen that the IB students face during their two-year program. Please wish them luck as they engage in this very important process…Ms. Joan C. O'Reilly, English Department Chair COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER –Michael Cauvel, Aquatics Coordinator at Casitas Water Adventure met with students during the lunch period outside the College and Career Center on Monday, January 11. Students were provided information brochures about earning Lifeguard and First Aid Certification and training dates being offered. Elizabeth Tobias, Indian Education Counselor, met with thirteen students enrolled in the Indian Education Consortium Program on Tuesday, January 12, during first period. She talked about the Indian Tribes of the Pacific Northwest and showed a PowerPoint with videos about their housing, symbolism on their ceremonial vestments, totem poles, and customs. Andrea Delgado, Student Recruiter, Harvard College - Cambridge, MA, gave a presentation to twenty-four students during lunch on Tuesday, January 12. She spoke about college life, admissions requirements, and available financial aid.
