Tomatoes are native to South and Central America. Health Benefits, from MyPlate Tomatoes contain many nutrients that are part of a healthy and balanced diet. Below are the main ones, and why they are so important. Vitamin A keeps eyes and skin healthy and helps to protect against infections. Vitamin C helps heal cuts and wounds and keeps teeth and gums healthy. Vitamin C aids in iron absorption Eating vegetables and fruits rich in potassium as part of an overall healthy diet may lower blood pressure, and may also reduce the risk of developing kidney stones and help to decrease bone loss. The Post-Valentine’s Day Candy Rush is Coming* Just like after Christmas, the after Valentine’s Day donations from our local corporate donors tend to be of the sugary variety. This is a very exciting thing if you have a sweet tooth, but having a stash of candy at home can often be tempting to eat more of in one sitting than you should. This year, try these tips for using the candy and spreading out the sugar: Candy bouquets: try saving up some of the candy for gifting. Tape popsicle sticks to the backs of wrapped candy bars and put them in a jar or a vase like you would flowers. This makes a fun, edible gift! We came across these great ideas for non-candy treats on FoodNetwork.com. Most of these items are things that we regularly have at the Food Closet, so all you will need it some paper, string, and a marker to make cute Valentines that do not break the bank or rot your teeth! Volume 1, Issue 1 Use candy bars in place of chocolate chips: chop up chocolate candy bars into small bits and mix into your favorite cookie recipe instead of chocolate chips. Throw an ice cream sundae party: empty various hard candies into bowls to put out as toppings. Then melt chocolate in the microwave in a glass dish in 30 second increments to make your own hot fudge. Invite your friends over and make a party out of it. *though we assume we will see a candy rush again this year, we cannot guarantee it. Non-Candy Valentine’s Treats!
