The school acknowledges the aforesaid and plans to introduce
concepts and teaching techniques which could help the children
realize their potentialities, imbibe good values and apply learning
into action.
Interactive learning by peer group teaching use of over head
projectors, power point presentation, work sheets and backup
sheets based on given study material over and above ‘Activity
Based Learning’ ABL will be the highlights of our teaching
strategy.*Modern concepts of mass media ,journalism ,economic
management, fashion world, financial management, share trading
, banking, biotechnology , nano technology , astro physics ,
industrial , microbiology ,information technology , MMWT , IP
are being included in the syllabus for updating of student’s
knowledge and skills. You can teach a student a lesson for a day
but if we teach him/her to learn by creating curiosity, he/she
will continue the learning process for ever.
Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation
(CCE)
The larger context of education is to prepare futuristic citizens
for a meaningful and Productive life in a globalised society.
There is a dire need to strengthen the Education system even
more so in s pluralistic society which addresses itself to a
Heterogeneous group. Evaluation is a means of realizing the
extent to which we have been successful in imparting such an
education. Evaluation is an indispensable part of the educational
process as some prom of assessment is necessary to determine
Flyers1
the effectiveness of teaching learning processes and their
Assimilation by learners.
External examinations’ are largely inappropriate for the
knowledge society’ of the 21stcentury and its’ need for innovative
problem solvers’, Questions if not framed well,” call for rote
memorization and fail to test higher-order skills like reasoning
and Analysis, lateral thinking, creativity and judgment. External
exams make no
Allowance for different types of learners and learning
environments and induce an In-ordinate level of anxiety and
stress.”
This calls for a functional and reliable system of school-based
evaluation.
We need to look at the holistic assessment of a learner which
also includes co-Scholastic area of life skills, attitudes and
Values, sports and games as well as Co-curricular activities. The
CCE scheme aims at addressing this in a holistic manner.
The CCE in classes IX & X is intended to provide holistic profile
of the Learner through evaluation of both scholastic and Coscholastic areas spread over two Terms each during two
academic years.
Evaluation of Scholastic areas:
Each term will have two formative assessments and summative
assessments
For evaluation of scholastic areas.
2
Formative Assessments:
Formative assessment is a tool used by the teachers to
continuously monitor student progress in a non-threatening and
supportive environment. It used effectively it can improve
student performance tremendously while raising the self-esteem
of the child and reducing the work load of the teacher. Some of
the main features of Formative Assessments are that it is
diagnostic and remedial, provides effective feedback to student,
allows for the active involvement of students in their own
Learning, enable teachers to adjust teachings to take account of
the results of Assessment and recognizes the profound
influence that assessment has on the motivation and self-esteem
of students, both of which are crucial influences in Learning .Ex.
quizzes, conversations, interviews, oral testing, visual testing
,project, practical’s& assignments.
Summative Assessment
The summative assessment is the terminal assessment of
performance at the end of instruction .under the end term
summative assessment, the students will be tested internally
based on the following criteria:(a) Curriculum and syllabus as circulated by the board.

ENGLISH COMMUNICATIVE
(CODE NO. 101)
This is a two-year syllabus for classes IX and X. The CBSE has prepared a package for this
syllabus called
Interact in English. It includes the following:
For Students
1 Main Course Book
2 Literature Reader
3 Work Book
4 Long Reading Text
Interact in English has been designed to develop the student's communicative competence in
English. Therefore, content selection is determined by the student's present and future
academic, social and professional needs.
The overall aims of the course are:
(a) To enable the learner to communicate effectively and appropriately in real-life situations.
(b) To use English effectively for study purposes across the curriculum.
(c) To develop and integrate the use of the four language skills, i.e. listening, speaking, reading
and writing.
(d) To develop interest in and appreciation of literature.
(e) To revise and reinforce structures already learnt.to obtain information on the meaning and
use of lexical items.
ASSESSMENT OF SPEAKING AND LISTENING SKILLS IN (ASL)
CCE (Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation) has clearly outlined the significance of
speaking and listening skills as part of co-scholastic areas of achievement by every
learner and also stresses the clear integration of assessment of speaking and listening
skills as a part of the curriculum transaction.
The formative assessment of these two skills along with other skills have been formally
provisioned under CCE .But in the absence of Summative Assessment, we have not
positioned the learner’s proficiency in speaking and listening thereby leading to a wash
back effect of very little or no importance given to these skills in our classrooms . As
a result, a large population of students passes out of schools with inadequate
competence in expressive communication skills.
As good communication skills raise the self esteem of a student, CBSE essentially
desires that the students acquire proficiency in them by the time they leave school.
In the present day global markets, speaking and listening are considered to be the
essential skills of real life.
Flyers1
Considering this, CBSE proposes to give 20% weightage in Formative and Summative
Assessments in the Assessment of Speaking and Listening Skills. Therefore the
Assessment of Speaking and Listening Skills will be done formally at the term-end
examination in Summative Assessment – II.
LISTENING
The Listening Comprehension section tests the student’s ability to listen for basic interpersonal,
instructional and academic purposes. A number of sub-skills need to be developed in the everyday
classroom transaction. Given below are some of the sub-skills of listening which need to be
assessed in the formative and summative assessments:
i. Listening for specific information
ii. Listening for general understanding
iii. Predictive listening
iv. Inferential listening
v. Listening for pleasure
vi. Intensive listening
vii. Evaluative listening
SPEAKING
The Speaking skill had acquired a very important place as a communication skill. Like
listening skill – a number of sub-skills of speaking need to be consciously developed
among students. Some of the sub-skills which can be assessed are as follows:
1. Speaking intelligibly using appropriate word stress, sentence stress and intonation
patterns.
2. Narrating incidents and events, real or imaginary in a logical sequence.
3. Presenting oral reports or summaries; making announcements clearly and
confidently.
4. Expressing and arguing a point of view clearly and effectively.
5. Taking active part in group discussions, showing ability to express agreement or
disagreement, summarising ideas, eliciting the views of others, and presenting own
ideas.
6. Expressing and responding to personal feelings, opinions and attitudes.
7. Participating in spontaneous spoken discourse in familiar social situations .

The subject of science plays an important role in developing in
children well-defined abilities in cognitive, affective and
psychomotor domains. It augments the spirit of enquiry,
creativity, objectivity and aesthetic sensibility.
Whereas the upper primary stage demands that plentiful
opportunities should be provided to the students to engage them
with the processes of science like observing, recording
observations, drawing, tabulation, plotting graphs etc., the
secondary stage expects abstraction and quantitative reasoning
to occupy a more central place in the teaching and learning of
science. Thus, the idea of atoms and molecules being the building
blocks of matter makes its appearance, as does Newton's law of
gravitation. The present syllabus has been designed around six
broad themes viz. Food, Materials, The World of The Living,
How Things Work, Moving Things, People and Ideas, Natural
Phenomenon and Natural Resources. Special care has been taken
to avoid temptation of adding too many concepts than can be
comfortably learnt in the given time frame. No attempt has been
made to be comprehensive.
At this stage, while science is still a common subject, the
disciplines of Physics, Chemistry and Biology begin to emerge.
The students should be exposed to experiences as well as modes
of reasoning that are typical of the subject.

SOCIAL SCIENCE
CODE NO. 087
RATIONALE
Social Science is a compulsory subject up to secondary stage of
school education. It is an integral component of general
education because it helps the learners in understanding
the environment in its totality and developing a broader
perspective and an empirical, reasonable and humane outlook.
This is of crucial importance because it helps them grow
into well-informed and responsible citizens with necessary
attributes and skills for being able to participate and contribute
effectively in the process of development and nation-building.
The social science curriculum draws its content mainly from
geography, history, political science and economics. Some
Flyers1
elements of sociology and commerce are also included. Together
they provide a comprehensive view of society-over space and
time, and in relation to each other. Each subject’s distinct
methods of enquiry help the learners understand society from
different angles and form a holistic view.
OBJECTIVES
The main objectives of this syllabus are :
to develop an understanding of the processes of change and
development-both in Summative Assessment s of time and
space, through which human societies have evolved.
to make learners realise that the process of change is
continuous and any event or phenomenon or issue cannot be
viewed in isolation but in a wider context of time and space.
to develop an understanding of contemporary India with its
historical perspective, of the basic framework of the goals
and policies of national development in independent India,
and of the process of change with appropriate connections
to world development.
to deepen knowledge about and understanding of India’s
freedom struggle and of the values and ideals that it
represented, and to develop an appreciation of the
contributions made by people of all sections and regions of
the country.
to help learners understand and cherish the values enshrined in
the Indian Constitution and to prepare them for their roles
and responsibilities as effective citizens of a democratic
society.
38
to deepen the knowledge and understanding of India’s
environment in its totality, their interactive processes and
effects on the future quality of people's lives
to facilitate the learners to understand and appreciate the
diversity in the land and people of the country with its
underlying unity.
to develop an appreciation of the richness and variety of India’s
heritage-both natural and cultural and the need for its
preservation.
to promote an understanding of the issues and challenges of
contemporary India-environmental, economic and social, as
part of the development process.
to help pupils acquire knowledge, skills and understanding to
face the challenges of contemporary society as individuals
and groups and learn the art of living a confident and stressfree life as well as participating effectively in the
community
to develop scientific temper by promoting the spirit of enquiry
and following a rational and objective approach in analyzing
and evaluating data and information as well as views and
interpretations
to develop academic and social skills such as critical thinking,
communicating effectively both in visual and verbal formscooperating with others, taking initiatives and providing
leadership in solving others' problems
to develop qualities clustered around the personal, social,
moral, national and spiritual values that make a person humane
and socially effective.

Introduction of Open Text-based Assessment(OTBA)
in the Summative Assessment II of Class IX :
The question paper in each main subject will have a separate section of 10 marks for open
text-based assessment (OTBA). The OTBA section will comprise of text material
accompanied by 2-3 questions based on that text. The questions based on text will be of
higher order thinking skills requiring students to apply learning’s to the situation given in the
article/report/mind-mapping/case study/draw inference /conclusions etc. The questions based
on the text will be open ended ,extrapolative, inferential and look at personal response and
justifying a point of view. With the addition of OTBA of 10 marks , the total paper of
summative assessment in a subject will be of 100 marks.
The Board has amended its examination Bye-Laws to make it mandatory for students to appear in
both the Summative Assessments and score a minimum of 25% marks in aggregate i.e. (SA I+SA
II) in these assessments w. e. f. 2013-14.
The Board has also initiated Assessment of Speaking and Listening Skills (ASL) and Open Text
Based Assessments (OTBA) from the academic session 2013-14 in class IX and class XI to focus
on communicative aspects of language learning and problems based on higher order reasoning
skills.
In the light of above initiatives, the Performance Profile for class IX for this year is slightly
modified (enclosed with this circular). The following points are highlighted in this regard:
1. There is no change in the criteria for working out the overall result i.e. marks obtained in both
the SAs will be totalled and then converted into respective grade as per the existing scheme.
2. The grades ‘E1@’ or ‘E2@’ will indicate that candidate has obtained less than 25% mandatory
marks in Summative Assessments
3. The grade scored in the Assessment of Speaking and Listening Skills (ASL) in English will be a
part of Summative Assessments I and II (70+20) and will be reflected as an aggregate grade in
the Performance Profile. A detailed notification in this regard has been issued to schools and is
also available at the website www.cbseacademic.in.
Flyers1
4. As Open Text Based Assessment (OTBA) will be a part of the Summative Assessment-II
question paper, there will be no need for calculating grades in the subjects containing OTBA
separately.
5. The total marks of the question papers for the subjects having OTBA (English, Hindi,
Mathematics, Science and Social Science) in the Summative Assessment II will be 100 and the
timing will be 3-3½ hours. The overall marks obtained in these subjects will be multiplied by 0.3
to make it 30% which is the weighting for Summative Assessments II. For the subjects which do
not have OTBA element, the question paper will be of 90 marks and the process for computing
30% weighting will remain the same as followed in the previous year i.e. division by 3 to make it
30%.
6. The instruction regarding obtaining 25% mandatory marks in the Summative Assessments
(both the SA I and SA II taken together), ASL, OTBA and skill based vocational subjects under
National Vocational Education Qualification Framework (NVEQF) have been added in the Scheme
of Studies given at the back of the Performance Profile.
